Wonderfully weird
bob the moo30 April 2007
We open with a shot of a brain on a spinal cord and we close with the sound of brains being stirred inside someone's skull. Between these two unsettling experiences is a journey into the brain to discover weird creatures moving across a strange terrain. You can pretty much forget plot summaries here because that's all I can give you. However what I can tell you is that it is instantly engaging, freaky and then it is done. Bavari's images are startling and beautiful in a sick, ugly way – his imagination in conception and delivery is impressive from start to finish.

It won't be to everyone's taste but it is still a darling of some festivals and I notice it has found a home on U-Tube where many have embraced it for what it is – weird and wonderful.

Underrated Warning: Spoilers
For a short being made in 1999, the CGI has aged phenomenally well; at first glance one would think this was made at least one decade later. But also the imagery it's pretty creative and wonderfully nightmarish from beginning to end, doing far more in less than two minutes than many other shorts in twice the time.

I guess the relatively low rating is due its lack of a conventional narrative, but in many ways it felt quite ahead of its time, featuring the flashy surreal randomness that others animators would popularize online during the next years, particularly thanks to Youtube.

In my opinion, it deserves a higher score than just 6.0.

How come Alessandro Bavari doesn't get the same recognition than filmmakers as Chris Cunningham? His stuff is just as impressive.
