I see good things coming!
reinaldop-7104322 February 2020
Starts slowly but actually warms up. I love the humanness in all the characters. In my household we always made a way to get through. Though based in the west coast it shows the Latin American culture in a light I'm familiar with and won't ever forget!

Charming
TheOtherUprising11 June 2021
Being a middle aged white male from outside the United States I'm probably not the target demographic but I find this show charming. Some of its themes are universal: family, community, cultural clashes, economic pressures, trying to live your values under challenging circumstances. These are things a lot of us can relate to in our own context.

The backdrop of the show is about creeping gentrification into a Latino community in L. A. centered around a cast of characters tied together by family and their local taco shop. There are a lot of political themes around class and culture that come up that may turn off some people but I never found any of it heavy handed even in instances where I didn't agree with the messaging.

The cast is solid and the characters are well developed. I particularly enjoyed watching Karrie Martin as Ana, she lights up the screen in every scene she's in. I hope to see more of her. Glad to see its getting a second season.

THEY are MAD
patoluvsfilms22 February 2020
Great show, honestly the first two episodes are the weakest and yet they're really good. After episode 3 the show really takes form, FANTASTIC storytelling, the subject matters are important and relevant; very well told and acted. It has so much spirit and I can't stop talking about it to everyone i know. You'll notice some people are giving bad reviews (not surprised at all) because the shows way of telling this stories while also making several points; many people are going through that and much worse and just because those scenarios don't paint SOME well "it's biased", these are the same people that love to remind you everyday 'not everyone of us' but when some else does anything 'it's all of them'. Watch it, love it y gózalo!

Gentrification IS Real
alewis9722422 February 2020
I have watched the gentrification of my area (Portland, Oregon) and this is a big problem here. Although the people affected in my area are African-American, the issues they are facing are the same. There have been proposals in Portland to pay reparations. However, that is not the issue. People are losing their homes and entire way of life and throwing money at it doesn't solve the underlying problem. I do have to say this show is very depressing and at times, hard to watch. I actually am taking a break as I write this. I think the message needs to be heard. Gentefied has great acting and the show really captures what it is like in East L.A. which is a vibrant, culture-rich community whose citizens are just trying to survive and live the American Dream. If you can get past the first few episodes, you WILL be rewarded!

Wonderful and Real
Clarissa_smiles2621 February 2020
This show is fun yet portrays real issues with Latinx businesses and struggles in America. Not to mention, the values of family and community are heartwarming to see. Neighborhoods across the nation can relate to the stories told in the show so I hope for a season 2 and for more shows like this on Netflix. Gentrification is real and has taken over cities like LA. Don't ride this show off as "hating white people" because it doesn't. Don't confuse criticism and commentary with hate. Anyone can enjoy this show for the stories being told. Gentefied establishes a great commentary while staying familiar and realistic.

Worth watching with an open mind
Coralknight3 April 2020
First of all, I'm 100% for ANY positive Latin representation in the media. For some reason, Latin comedies and sit-coms just don't tend to do well on TV...and Gentefied underscores why. I think most families can sympathize with a flawed but lovable patriarch, a family business, younger generation that can't seem to find their place, etc. But the fact that this is set in Boyle Heights/East LA doesn't mean it needs to be militant and say "viva la raza!!!" in every other sentence. The sad reality is, like "East Los High", the only way such Latin-themed shows get put on the air is if they pander to the ultra-leftist Hollywood narrative (i.e. lesbian relationships, women talking about "gender is a social construct", frequent references to "toxic masculinity" etc) which means even though this is a series by Latinos, with Latino actors...it isn't at all what real life is for most Latin people in the US (or East LA). Like I said, I enjoyed some of the themes, and I'm hoping more people do as well...I just think they need to tone down the propaganda (FYI, it's Latino, Latina or just Latin if you're speaking English...LatinX is a made up term to colonize Romance languages with a political agenda) if they really want to make this a hit as opposed to a radical sounding-board. There really are some good performances here, so I'd say with all the caveats in mind, give this show a watch.

It's not an easy topic to discuss and there were no easy answers. A great show.

Great idea. Disappointed by the last few episodes.
dschwartz-4513924 March 2020
I watched the whole series in a 24 hour period. I loved it at first but was disappointed at the end. The show explores the important intersection of race sexuality and socioeconomics, but does so in a way the emerges as increasingly shallow in the second half. The show is strongest in the first few episodes and certain episodes where they zoom in on the struggles of individuals like the mariachi singer and his son. White people in the show are portrayed one dimensionally as racist and cruel. Not a single what character has an depth. The Mexican people are basically portrayed as victims of white culture and white economics. Whenever a Mexican tried to raise themselves up economically, they are portrayed as traitors to their community. Certain crucial plot elements make no sense whatsoever, especially episode 9. Mexicans protesting a Mexican restaurant for advertising to more wealthy clientele is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. The Dominican character makes no sense to me. Pointless drama capitalizing on current issues. Has potential. Hope it gets renewed for a second season despite its severe flaws

It's heart felt aswell. Easy to binge in a day. Love seeing gay and trans characters good to see people like me on screen finally. Truly a good show.

A worthwhile tale of the diversity in the immigrant and Mexican-American story
omega1455 March 2020
Hang on till the end for a heartfelt journey in getting to know the characters. I found the first four or five episodes to focus a bit too much on the comical side with not much lack of depth other than the characters being non-stereotypical depictions of Mexicans. The show takes a turn towards a more serious role when the writers start tackling issues of immigrant struggles and gentrification towards the second half. This made the show felt a little unbalanced but the heart throughout the show is what made me stick with it and even shed a tear or two over the lives of the characters that I had come to know over 10 episodes. Joaquín Cosio as Pops is brilliant and sometimes overshadows the other less experienced and younger actors. The solo episode on Jaime Alvarez is excellent and may be my favorite episode the entire show. The actors who play Chris, Eric and Ana struggle a bit in the beginning but finish the season much stronger showing true emotion in their characters. I'm really looking forward to a season 2 on a show that is as socially important as it is entertaining.

Afro Latinos always stereotypical in Netflix shows
kwicknotary28 November 2021
Why is every African American character in the show part of an alternate lifestyle? Afro Latinos deserve to be represented in all facets. We get very few roles yet this the only way you choose to represent us. So disappointing. If you get another season can we get at least one positive, straight Afro Latino or Afro Latina in a role? But then again it is Hollywood and this is the only way they chose to see all of us.

Great Latino comedy. Two Thumbs up high.
KATO-SUBZERO29 March 2021
28 March 2021: Latina actress, America Ferrera {Ugly Betty, Sisterhood of Traveling Pants & Our Family Wedding}, writer, Linda Chavez and casting director, Carla Hool has done a great job. Everyone in American and Latin countries should watch this show. There are at least 18 Spanish speaking countries on the planet. One of the the best things I like about it that although, it is based on Mexican culture with a mostly Mexican American actors/actresses, but Carla and America has also cast Hispanics that are Puerto Rican, Colombian, Dominicans and other Latin races and what makes it beautiful is that she and America Ferrera knows that Hispanics comes in all skin tones. I would like to see more African Latinos cast on the show such as Gina Torres, Laz Alonzo or Zoe Saldaña. This is so much better than those racist telenovelas on the Spanish channel, Univision where all Latinos are White skin with blond hair and blue eyes. I also like that the cast speaks Spanish and English. Two Thumbs up, way up high. I hope it last for at least five years.

Too woke
theethinethou22 November 2021
I came excitedly wanting to immerse myself into a show about Mexican American culture... but instead I'm getting identity politics, anti-racism and LGBT issues shoved down my throat.

If you're into these things this is the show for you. The irony is that the show is starting to turn into a parody of these issues.

Well written and thoughtful
sgsierra23 February 2020
Wonderful wonderful show! The characters are fully fleshed out without stereotyping and the treatment of difficult issues is brilliant. These are real issues in East L.A. , where my family grew up. The discussions around controversial issues aren't preachy - they explore the different points of view and acknowledge that these issues are tough and that everyone has a good point. Gentrification, in and of itself, is a controversial issues. Yes, you want more money to poor communities, but these means bringing in different demographics which brings change that offends some people. But you can't have everything the same and make it different, really. Exploring the challenges of young Latinx people who are pulled between the past and the future is very real. The negative reviews here are people who can't relate and who don't want to try. This is basically the entire problem with our society. Do they have any idea how meaningless many of their favorite shows are to people living the reality in this show? But to me, there are archetypes who resonate. If you don't think you can relate, give it a chance anyway to see how many of us grew up and to understand the issues we struggle with. Great acting, btw. I love the dad, especially and the young chef.

Season one, excellent. Season two, cheap tricks
dedawson-8256117 November 2021
As an older guy unfamiliar with the pressures around the Hispanic communities of Southern California, I found the first season of this show revealing, absorbing, funny and sad. The second season, however, seems to have ditched the whole assimilation versus mainstream issue and now tries for impact through loud costumes, constant cursing and valueless sexuality. The direction of the show was always weak, but now the storylines are dumb and overly drawn out.

Good Overall Story Mixed with Politics
TGMAS30 November 2021
Unfortunately the good this show does have is ruined with exaggerated political ideology. I actually like all of the main characters of the family. The story is decent and demonstrates every family is unique. The grandfather is the type of grandfather I would want. Loving and wise. They nailed it with this character. Unfortunately for me though so much of the show is built around political ideology that it's kind of a turn off. They should have taken a cue from Kim's Convenience. It's an excellent show about an immigrant family that is hilarious but doesn't shove any politics down your throat.

Warms the soul!
silverturquoise28 February 2020
What a gem of a series! Fantastic writing, characters, and cast! Love the sets, art, and especially the music too....it is just so beautiful to watch. On the surface, it is the story of a creative and interesting family from Boyle Heights in LA, but under the surface, it is the story of us all. I am a big fan of America Ferrera, and I think she has created a wonderful series. Can't wait for Season 2!!!

Interesting but too predictable
zachburroughs17 November 2021
I like the idea of the story and the family dynamics. The woke themes were a bit too pervasive. At one point an activist from the community protests a neighborhood restaurant for trying to advertise to others outside the community. What is wrong with someone outside your neighborhood patronizing a restaurant? Apparently it is traitorous to have any interaction with gentrifiers (aka "non-Latinos"). In another scene the artistic character is at a museum and makes the comment that the artist of a piece is probably a white male so that's "problematic". They also continually vilify any member of their community that has left and become successful. They too are apparently traitors. Why would you not be happy for someone that succeeded?

This was a bit slow at the very beginning, but TOTALLY worth it! Other people have commented on the realistic portrayal and I'd totally have to agree. Hope to see more seasons!

Good show but unrealistic
mydreamsarelove8 May 2020
Soft spoilers

I'm a black female and enjoy shows exploring diversity. So far, enjoying the show (Ep 7). Overall, I think it has a great plot but some of the scenes are a bit unrealistic and predictable which is like, really? Where are the, "I definitely didn't see that coming!" moments? The bread crumbs leading to the reveal, are more like dinner rolls. Give us a hint but not too much, like with the painting... That was good. I REALLY appreciate learning the backstory to each of the characters that we learned about in the first couple of episodes. I always feel like I want to know exactly how everyone is connected and why. That was set up well! I don't mind seeing Ana's relationship or those like it but my goodness, those two kiss entirely too much. It's unrealistic and overkill. I'd expect more of that from Erik and Lidia, given their circumstances. Let's see an even balance of affection and find more creative ways to show the audience, loving relationships. I'd be curious to read the script to see if it's written that way or if that's from the Director...

Overall, it's funny and relatable. I am glad I took a chance on this! NOTE: If you do not understand Spanish, English subtitles are necessary. Enjoy!
