The new media venture run by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs finally has a name.
It has been christened Candle Media, the pair announced on Tuesday while confirming their deal to buy a minority stake in Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Inc. The Smiths’ company produced the Oscar-contender “King Richard,” the Netflix hit “Cobra Kai” and the Facebook Watch show “Red Table Talk.” Sources say that Candle spent $60 million for a stake that gives them just over 10% of the company. That values Westbrook at roughly $600 million.
In a statement, Mayer and Staggs praised Westbrook “…as a home for world-class creators that is built for the digital age – which fully aligns with our company’s vision for the future of media.”
Candle is backed by venture capital giant Blackstone. Staggs previously served as Disney’s chief operating officer, chief financial officer and chairman of its parks and resorts business.

Moonbug Entertainment has forged a distribution pact with Etisalat, one of the largest telecom operators across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa (Mena).
The deal will call for roughly 270 episodes of Moonbug’s most popular content franchises -- including CoComelon (which will be available in both English and Arabic), Blippi, and Little Baby Bum -- to stream on Etisalat’s kid-focused SVOD service, e-Junior. This marks the first time that Blippi will be distributed in the Mena region in its original English language, Moonbug says.
“Moonbug’s content introduces children to universal themes that have proven to transcend across different languages and regions,” Nicolas Eglau, the company’s managing director Emea and Apac, said in a statement.

Former Disney executive David Levine is to become the head of studio at Moonbug Entertainment, the company behind kids’ YouTube sensation Little Baby Bum.
Levine stepped down as Disney’s vice president of kids programming for the UK, Europe, and Africa at the end of June after a 16-year spell at the house of mouse.
He will focus on growing Moonbug’s IP by expanding brands including CoComelon and Blippi. He will report to René Rechtman, co-founder and CEO, Moonbug.
“Kids content is playing an increasingly vital role in early childhood development, and now more than ever parents are looking for safe, inclusive, educational content they can trust. Moonbug is at the forefront of this transformation,” Levine said.

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.
In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

HBO Max is serving up a lot of great new movies this October. Fittingly for the spooky season, the Warner Bros. streaming service is adding a fair few classic horrors to its library next month, but there’s really something for everyone going up – from comedies to romances to sci-fi to superhero films.
Speaking of that last genre, DC lovers will be pleased to note that 2013’s Man of Steel, the movie that kicked off the Dceu, is among the titles arriving on October 1st. Besides that, there’s a bunch of animated DC pics dropping the same day, including Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and All-Star Superman. 2005’s Constantine featuring Keanu Reeves, meanwhile, also debuts on the service from the 1st.
That’s not the only film starring the beloved actor headed to the platform, though, as probably the highlight of October’s haul is the addition of the...

Kids’ content giant Moonbug is pushing further into China via a new distribution deal with Tencent Video -- a streaming platform owned by Chinese internet giant Tencent that hosts drama series, films, variety shows, animation, sports content, and more.
As part of the deal, four Moonbug properties -- animated series Go Buster; nursery rhymes channels Playtime With Twinkle; and KiiYii; and The Sharksons, an animated series about a family of sharks -- will launch this month on Tencent Video in both English and Mandarin. Moonbug develops values-based educational content for kids, it says, that promote compassion and empathy while teaching fundamental life skills.

Four toys are currently available via Amazon and Walmart, with additional products aimed at preschoolers slated to roll out in coming months.

The first run of Amazon-exclusive items, available through Dec. 1, include child-sized scooters ($40) and buses, as well as a plush toy ($20). Little Baby Bum is also vending a Twinkle The Star plush toy -- inspired by another Little Baby Bum character -- that sings the popular nursery rhyme.
