ESPN Films’ sports docuseries “30 for 30” will launch five new docus this summer.
The upcoming slate features docs about topics including gamer brand FaZe Clan, former track and field superstar Butch Reynolds, and comedy and sports YouTube creator company Dude Perfect.
The summer lineup will launch on June 4 with Kathleen Jayme and Asia Youngman’s “I’m Just Here for the Riot.” About the infamous 2011 Vancouver riot following a Canucks loss to the Boston Bruins during the Stanley Cup final, the film chronicles the event and its aftermath while also raising deeper questions about fandom, violence, and the shocking power of an angry crowd.
The remaining four docus on the slate are: Ismail Al-Amin’s “False Positive,” Justin Staple’s “No Scope: The Story of FaZe Clan,” Jay Caspian Kang’s “American Son,” and Oliver Anderson and Louis Burgdorf’s “Dude Perfect: A Very Long Shot.”

Joe Manganiello recently said that he’s always “on the lookout for a good werewolf script” because he feels he has some unfinished business from his days of playing a werewolf on HBO series True Blood – but while we wait to see if and when he’s going to end up making a werewolf movie, Deadline reports that he has signed on to star in and produce a zombie thriller called Mountain Man.
Mountain Man is based on a series of novels written by Keith C. Blackmore. There are currently three books in that series, so if the movie is well-received there is some franchise potential here.
John Lee, whose previous credits include False Positive and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, is set to direct the film from a screenplay by Matt Deller. Mountain Man will tell the story of Gus, a lonely post-apocalyptic survivor facing isolation and the...

While pregnancy is touted as one of the most beautiful aspects of life, the journey toward the reward of a bouncing baby is not always smooth. Although considered one of the most "natural" things in the world, the act of pregnancy has symptoms that are strange, physically and emotionally draining, and even life-or-death. There's a user on TikTok referred to as "The Girl with the List" who keeps a list of currently over 300 ways pregnancy and childbirth can ravage your body and mind: making you sick, stretching your skin, feeling like sharp pains in your back, swelling your ankles, losing your hair, weakening your nails, and on and on.
There's something very unsettling about a whole other person growing and moving inside you, absorbing your nutrients, changing who you are inside and out, and then being expelled from your body — sometimes in a violent manner. It's no wonder the horror...

This SXSW round-up is a bit like our living (and growing) scrapbook from this year’s big event. We’ll continue to update the article as more video interviews and entries become available.
The SXSW festival has changed and changed again in its 35-plus years. Originally begun as “just” a music festival, the event has become an intersection that’s ever expanding. Bringing in the best of film, television, gaming, and even the cutting edge of technology, it is sometimes hard to quantify what isn’t SXSW these days. Even the Film Festival is now the Film & TV Festival. Still, Den of Geek tried to cover it all, so here’s a look at all the exciting projects we got an early glimpse at in our studio.

What if Ilana from “Broad City” was pregnant?
If you want to find out, watch the trailer for “Babes,” which Neon released on Thursday.
In the comedy film, which Ilana Glazer wrote with Josh Rabinowitz, the “Broad City” alum plays Eden, a proudly single, thirtysomething New Yorker who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and decides to keep the baby. She relies on her best friend Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two, for help. It’s going to be a very challenging process, and not even Dawn is sure Eden will be able to pull it off. The humor seems like a more grown-up version of the chaotic whimsy Glazer brought to “Broad City,” her beloved Comedy Central sitcom.
“Babes” is directed by “Better Things” creator Pamela Adlon in her feature directorial debut. The cast also includes Hasan Minhaj, John Carroll Lynch, Stephan James, Oliver Platt, the Lucas brothers,...

Ornithologists will no doubt roll their eyes and scoff, “Who doesn’t know that?” But it was news to me that cuckoos, aside from inspiring those infernal kitsch clocks you want to smash once an hour, are also what’s known as brood parasites. That means they’re either too busy or too lazy or too evil to raise their own young, so they drop their eggs in the nests of other birds and let them do the parenting instead. Respect. German writer-director Tilman Singer folds that fascinating nugget of bird arcana into a reproductive horror scenario that’s more strange than coherent in his second feature, naturally titled Cuckoo.
There’s more than the seed of an entertainingly trippy freakout here, applying the peculiar breeding habits of the cuckoo to the demented plan of a self-described preservationist, bent on somehow or other building an assembly line of enhanced propagation using young “nestlings.

One of the biggest challenges of the Sundance Film Festival is trying to fit it all in and be everywhere all at once in Park City. On Sunday morning at The Park, a group of festival insiders stayed in one place for about two hours to take in a keynote from Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Oscar-winning producer Jonathan Wang and witness two producers being singled out with awards and $10,000 grants.
It all went down as part of a producers award collaboration between the Sundance Institute and Amazon MGM Studios. The prizes — one for fiction, one for nonfiction — were awarded to producers Brad Becker-Parton of Stress Positions and Toni Kamau of The Battle for Laikipia, two films that premiered in this year’s lineup.
Becker-Parton’s other credits include Tina Satter’s Reality, starring Sydney Sweeney, and Mariama Diallo’s Master, starring Regina Hall, a Sundance selection released by...

A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

Despite all of American Horror Story’s witches, vampires, murder Santas, and serial killers, the anthology series has always suffered from an identity crisis and focus issues. American Horror Story’s 12th season comes in after what was arguably the series’ strongest season in over a decade that would have made for a powerful, poignant way to conclude the anthology horror series. Instead, American Horror Story: Delicate ventures into risky, overdone territory with this pregnancy body horror drama.
What’s significant about AHS: Delicate is that it features some major firsts for the series. For one, American Horror Story: Delicate is the first season where series creator Ryan Murphy isn’t showrunner. Instead, Hailey Feiffer–a playwright–takes over these duties and writes the entire season. This is also the first time that American Horror Story explicitly adapts source material instead of throwing a bunch of genre tropes...

A24 is having a moment right now. For starters, the indie studio and 21st century tastemaker is actually able to produce movies during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes due to its separation from the major Hollywood studios. So bring on that movie where Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are responsible for killing a unicorn! More impressive though, A24 just picked up its second Best Picture Oscar in six years, and for a movie that walked away with a staggering seven Oscar wins overall in March.
Not bad for a company that’s barely a decade old, and which is still generally regarded in the zeitgeist for putting out strange, and yet often entrancing work. That, indeed, could be used to describe most of their horror output, which has had a bigger hand in shaping the genre in the 2010s than any other studio or production company not named Blumhouse. Exclusive: Justin Theroux is latest new addition to the ensemble of Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice sequel that has Tim Burton directing and Michael Keaton set to reprise his iconic character. Winona Ryder is also set to reprise her role from the original 1988 supernatural comedy, with Jenna Ortega set to play Ryder’s daughter in the new pic.
Not much is known about the sequel except that the titular ghost will return to cause more antics. Details about who Theroux is playing are also under wraps. Warner Bros just dated the pic for September 6, 2024, with production set to start Wednesday in the UK.
Burton is also producing along with Tommy Harper, Plan B, Marc Toberoff and David Geffen, with Alfred Gough and Miles Millar penning the most recent draft.
The cult 1988 movie made $75 million and further propelled Keaton’s star power; he and Burton would work together again in 1989’s Batman.

‘Chicago P.D.’: Sophia Bush Went on a Raid With the Chicago Police While Taking Down a Heroin Dealer
It’s been several seasons since Sophia Bush played Detective Erin Lindsay on Chicago P.D., but her legacy is still present. Not only was she part of the cast that successfully launched the second installment of the One Chicago universe after P.D. spawned from Chicago Fire, but she left an indelible impression on fans.
Chicago P.D. is now in its 10th season. Bush left after Season 4, which means she’s been gone for more than half the series. However, while on the show, she made every effort to portray the realities of being a police officer in Chicago. According to the actor, this included donning bulletproof vests during ride-alongs that led to real-life arrests.
Sophia Bush points out the criminal contrasts of living in Chicago
As with many stars on the One Chicago shows, Bush was based in Chicago while a cast member on Chicago P.D. Detective Lindsay was an early Fire-p.

As mergers and acquisitions have shaken up Hollywood, all eyes have been on A24 — recently rumored to be floating a sale for up to $3 billion. Would the nine-year-old indie tastemaker behind Oscar-winners like “Moonlight” and hit series like “Euphoria” cash in on the fervor that’s led to rich deals for Hello Sunshine and MGM? The answer, at least for now, is no.
IndieWire has confirmed that A24 has hired its very first CFO in J.B. Lockhart, who has served for the last four years as the CFO of the NBA. His charge is clear: lead the company’s continued global expansion. And with previous experience in venture capital and at Disney working to identify merger and acquisition targets, industry sources say it’s possible A24 hopes that the Lockhart-led growth is in preparation for a possible sale or public offering down the road — or even to acquire other companies itself.

A24 recently explored a possible sale, with the indie film studio floating an asking price of between $2.5 billion to $3 billion.
Sources familiar with the situation tell Variety that the Oscar-winning shop behind “Moonlight” and “Uncut Gems” has engaged with numerous potential suitors for more than 18 months. It’s unclear if those discussions continue to be ongoing. Sources close to A24 said the company is focused on expansion and is not prioritizing a sale.
Initially, the $2.5 billion-plus price tag drew some skepticism, but the media landscape has changed dramatically in just the past 12 months.
Amazon has set a deal to acquire MGM for $8.6 billion, a price that also seemed sky-high to industry insiders. Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine content banner has quietly begun seeking a sale or a partner in a deal that would value the company as high as $1 billion transaction. Ilana Glazer admits she’s been really worried about what people would think of her new movie, “False Positive.” While a dark comedy at times, the Hulu movie is quite different compared to the colorful comedy of “Broad City,” the sitcom she co-created with co-star Abbi Jacobson.
Co-written by Glazer and the film’s director John Lee, “False Positive” is a horror thriller of sorts about a couple (Glazer and Justin Theroux) who entrust a mysterious doctor (Pierce Brosnan) to help them conceive. “I’ve been really nervous to be honest,” Glazer says. “It’s like how are people going to react? It’s like a healthy practice for me to make something that is not aimed at pleasing. That’s a very big deal for me spiritually. … But I think we accurately captured what we were trying to do, which is to make the audience feel like, ‘Am I feeling this correctly?...

Idris Elba and Tom Hardy have long been fan favorites to take over the role of James Bond following Daniel Craig’s departure from the iconic spy series, and now both actors have gotten an endorsement from 007 actor Pierce Brosnan. While on the press tour for his new Hulu horror movie “False Positive,” Brosnan told People magazine that Elba would be a “magnificent” choice. Elba maintained in April that Bond buzz involving his name is simply rumor and he’s content with his “Luther” franchise instead.
“Idris Elba comes to mind,” Brosnan said. “Idris is such a powerful presence and such a great former voice tensity. He would be magnificent. There’s Tom Hardy out there as well. Tom can really chew the furniture up, just be a ball boy — both men can.”
Brosnan added, “And I think now that Daniel has left such an indelible footprint, they can go in many different ways.

Warning: Some spoilers ahead.
Hulu’s newest horror film, “False Positive,” is a departure from Ilana Glazer’s typical comedic roles and one which she is welcoming with open arms. As she sees it, it is an opportunity to dive into a much darker script that she hopes will help her process on screen some emotional turmoil she has struggled with off screen.
“False Positive” tells the story of a woman named Lucy (Glazer) and her husband Adrian (Justin Theroux) who try for over two years to get pregnant and finally find success with an acclaimed IVF doctor named John Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). The pregnancy takes, and Lucy gets pregnant with triplets — only to find out her pregnancy is “high risk.” She has to make an insanely difficult decision: undergo a fetal reduction and either keep two boys or the one girl.
Unbeknownst to Lucy, Adrian and Dr. Hindle are conspiring against her.

“False Positive,” which hit Hulu on Friday, sees Ilana Glazer terrorized by a sinister pregnancy and an even more sinister fertility doctor (Pierce Brosnan). The “Rosemary’s Baby” vibes have us reminiscing on not just that classic film but on all of the villainous children of horror history.

While young Charlie is ultimately a victim in Ari Aster’s instant-classic debut feature, “Hereditary,” she sure does make an eerie impression. Actress Milly Shapiro, in her first film role, imbues the troubled teen trope with a sense of otherworldly dread, rendering the character’s thousand-yard stares and periodic tongue-clicking genuinely creepy instead of comical. Although she is absent for the film’s off-the-walls final act, Charlie’s untimely demise remains one of the most shocking movie moments of recent memory.

To say Sophia Bush's role as Corgan in Hulu's False Positive is a departure from Brooke Davis on One Tree Hill is an understatement; where Brooke is selfless and kind-hearted, Corgan is selfish and heartless. "What really felt insidious to me about the character I play is that, if you asked her, she'd say that she's a great friend and a great person," Sophia told Popsugar. "This woman just makes my skin crawl. [She's] someone who's almost been poisoned by internalized misogyny and the worst of the gender politics in our society. Next it’s a mountain in the distance. John Lee’s socially perceptive horror thriller “False Positive” begins near the end of the story — with Ilana Glazer bloodied but unbowed — so it’s no spoiler to say that things go very wrong very fast. But Lee quickly rewinds to seemingly simpler times, when Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) are hoping to have a baby. After two years of trying, Lucy agrees to an appointment with Adrian’s former med-school professor, acclaimed reproductive endocrinologist John Hindle (Pierce Brosnan).
Dr. Hindle’s practice is so well-run that the initially reluctant Lucy is stunned: The office is soothing, his nurses are endlessly supportive, and the doctor himself couldn’t be more positive.
In fact, Lucy gets pregnant right away, with triplets. Dr. Hindle explains that she will have to undergo selective reduction to protect either the twin boys or the single girl. Once she wakes up from the procedure he...

Set to debut this Friday on Hulu is the pregnancy horror film False Positive, which was directed by John Lee and written by Lee and Ilana Glazer. Glazer also stars in the project as Lucy, a woman who has been struggling to get pregnant with her husband, Adrian (Justin Theroux). The couple eventually reaches out to one of the world’s preeminent fertility doctors, Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan), to help them make their dream of starting a family a reality. That decision comes with a nightmarish price tag attached for Lucy, who fears that her doctor might not be working in her best interests after all.

The trauma of pregnancy and childbirth is fertile ground for horror cinema, which makes it surprising that there aren’t more films centered on this topic. We can make a few guesses as to why this is the case, though chief among them is the shadow of Rosemary’s Baby, an undateable classic that feels as eerie and unsettling in 2021 as it did in 1968. There also seems a general assumption of audience squeamishness when it comes to such stories, but whether that’s true or not is debatable. Either way, the makers of False Positive seem to have a great deal of fun playing with both preconceptions. And while the film itself qualifies as a fitfully entertaining eye-roller, all involved deserve credit for the attempt.
At the top of that list is the film’s star, co-writer, and co-producer Ilana Glazer. With Abbi Jacobson, Glazer was the co-star and co-creator of Broad City,...

With his latest film, “False Positive,” director John Lee takes the always thrilling psychological horror genre, and he combines it with his signature dark comedy to construct a commentary on pregnancy and a woman’s right to her own bodily autonomy. Written by Lee, Ilana Glazer, and Alissa Nutting, “False Positive” stars Glazer as Lucy, who—along with her husband Adrian (Justin Theroux)—has been trying and failing to get pregnant.

Given the amount of nervousness, fear, and uncertainty many women face with the unpredictability of pregnancy—not to mention the strange-to-reckon-with fact that a small, separate being in a liquid sack is slowly incubating inside you—it’s a wonder there aren’t dozens of horror pregnancy films conceived every year. Ilana Glazer’s riff on this genre, “False Positive,” from A24 and Hulu, is born from the emotional turmoil that often accompanies pregnancy.

Ilana Glazer does a complete 180 from the Jewish screwball stoner humor of Broad City, taking an intense turn into psychological horror in False Positive. There’s not a trace of her slacker persona from the web series-turned-sitcom in her character Lucy, a young woman whose feelings of failure at being unable to get pregnant disappear when her husband’s connections allow them to skip the long waitlist for New York’s top fertility doctor. But the glow of expectant motherhood turns increasingly to paranoia, delusions and terror, eventually going full freak-out in John Lee’s twisted homage to Rosemary’s Baby for the post-ivf age.

The 10-episode dramedy is set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, “Physical” is a half-hour dark comedy following Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image…. that is until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics.
At first, hooked on the exercise itself, Sheila’s real road to empowerment comes when she discovers a way to merge this newfound passion with the burgeoning technology of videotape to start a revolutionary business. The series tracks her epic journey from a stifled,...

"You are 100 percent pregnant." Hulu has released the first official trailer for a new horror (comedy?) titled False Positive, from filmmaker John Lee, co-written by Lee and Ilana Glazer. This is premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival coming up in the next few weeks, then will be streaming on Hulu this June. Described as "a contemporary take on Rosemary's Baby," False Positive stars Ilana Glazer and Justin Theroux as a couple that finally finds hope in their fertility doctor, played by Pierce Brosnan. But things start to get strange. As if getting pregnant weren't complicated enough, Lucy sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about her fertility doctor. The cast includes Sophia Bush, Gretchen Mol, Josh Hamilton, Sullivan Jones, and Lucy Walters. Yeah this definitely looks extremely creepy with an unsettling sprinkle of dark comedy. This looks way more frightening than you're probably expecting, especially with Glazer in the lead.
