You mean this wasn't a comedy?
jmiller2115 May 2019
The reason I gave a 5 star ranking was that I was laughing through out. I am amazed anyone involved thought this was a serious attempt to portray ranch life in Texas. The performing ranch chores was hysterical. Clearly there wasn't a single person every involved in this movie who has ever stepped foot on a working ranch. When Abby drove the garden tractor around the field to the delight of her father, i almost fell off my chair laughing. The yellow rose booth at the fair, the backdrop for the Texas internet broadcast seem to magically appear. I would not be surprised if anyone involved with this movie would quickly sue to get their name removed from the credits. It may well have been a career threatening decision to associate one's self with this production. Yikes!

Sadly, Not One of Hallmark's Best
omijer13 May 2019
For a regular, devoted Hallmark viewer, Saturday night original movies are often looked forward to as new, exciting, innovative romantic offerings. Unfortunately, this film was not one of those. The storyline was familiar..successful young female star returns home..(one of Hallmark's very over-used scenarios)..because her father has had an accident and cannot run his business..She encounters an old lost love, and the rest of the film leads the viewer to finding out how the young woman resolves her old, unfinished romance, saves her father's business (in this case a Texas farm), and manages to find a way to stay "home" rather than return to her successful life in another city. The formula often works..but is becoming over-used in order to fit into the Hallmark niche. A large deterrent in this film was the poor acting. The hero's contrived Texas accent was so broad that many of his lines were blurred and incomprehensible. The father's stiff acting was never convincing or genuine. He sounded as if he was reading his lines from a poster board. It felt sad to see and aging Robbie Benson brought back in such an unsympathetic role. The young leading actress did her best with such poor material..using smiling as a form of acting. Interestingly one of the most impressive performances in this film was offered by David Lewis, a very familiar Hallmark star..usually seen as the second male lead, the rejected suitor, the innocent loser. In this film, he gets a chance to appear strong, decisive, and mature as a business tycoon with firm decisions and a serious demeanor. What a refreshing delight! For this viewer, he carried the film, being cast beside the shallow performances of the three main leads. This is pleasant diversion for a rainy evening, but it is surely not worthy of a Saturday night prime time Hallmark presentation.

Your usual country Hallmark film.
savethewatchmaker3 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is classic Hallmark fare, and in my opinion, is smack in the middle in terms of quality. It has redeeming points, and iffy bits as well, and all-in-all, I'd say this is an average movie that has (strangely) rabid critics after its hide.

First off, let's get some of these reviewers' beef with this movie's portrayal of farm life out of the way. Is it unrealistically glamorous? Yes, absolutely. (I personally had to laugh out loud at the artfully arranged bales of hale with an aesthetically pleasing wheel propped up against it that Abby was using as an egg organizing station). Does Hallmark have a history of doing this with past movies as well? Yes, absolutely! But is anyone actually watching this movie (or any Hallmark movies, really) for an actual, rational depiction of most walks of life? Most movies taking place in the city feature lavishly expensive apartments being afforded by menial office workers, which is really no different than ranch life getting a grand make-over for TV. Hallmark usually romanticizes its settings, but considering that romance is Hallmark's specialty, I find this sort of error easy to overlook (if not poke fun at and ultimately enjoy). That being said, Abby's "farm attire" that she went to a chic boutique to buy really was a bit of a stretch. And most of those outfits definitely didn't need a string of pearls to finish them off.

I would say that this film's biggest problem is how bland it is. While I appreciate that Abby and Ryan's reunion didn't start off with hostility (one of Hallmark's favorite tropes that really grates on me as a viewer), it didn't start off -- or continue -- with much of anything, really. Good chemistry can usually fill in these gaps, but the actors aren't exactly sweeping each other off their feet. There is absolutely no unpredictibility in this film; we know perfectly well in the first twenty minutes that these two are going to end up together despite Abby's inevitable pull back to New England at some point in the movie. Instead, we get a truly excessive amount of smiling at each other. Seriously, there's a lot of it. There's an entire montage of them repeatedly looking over their shoulders and grinning at each other while they're sprucing up Ryan's house. In the end, this story feels like it's lacking emotion more than anything else, which drags it down into forgettable territory.

This movie does do quite a few things right in my opinion, however, such as the subplot of Abby trying to break through with her father, even if the actor does seem a little miscast here (there sure is a lot of drawing out sentences and enunciating words strangely). Her attempt to bond with her father after battling with their distance was a relatable storyline, and I did get quite emotional during the scene when Abby's father shows her exactly how proud of her he is (even if the shrine he's built for her is a bit odd, and the scrapbooking he's done in her honor doesn't quite seem like the hobby of a man like him). Also, it was unbelievably refreshing that this movie didn't feature a side story of anyone unwillingly losing their farm/ranch/house/business that the main character has to step up to save. That one's been milked to death, and thankfully, this movie is free from that drama.

Overall, nothing special, but not exactly a waste of time either. Sweet but simple.

Boring
jessbir-2361813 May 2019
I love hallmark movies and was especially looking forward to this one since im a big fan of Nathan parsons but not even he could save this horrible movie. the writing is just dreadful and the acting mediocre at best. the female lead didn't seem genuine to me at all and the father was just unlikable from start to finish. the best actor in the movie was david lewis who didn't even have a main role. I was bored to death watching this movie I almost feel asleep such a big disappointment I really hope hallmark does better next time.

A Feeling of Home

I don't understand all the negativity this film seems to be getting.

I liked it, I thought it was fun and very much in the usual Hallmark film formula/mode.

I liked Jonna Walsh as the female lead, I thought she brought something different to the normal portrayal we get from Hallmark's other standards (Chabert, McKellar, Sweetin etc).

To criticize it for being standard Hallmark fluff feels silly - if you're a fan you surely know what you're getting by now.

Good fun.

Humdrum story saved by the 2 male leads.
rebekahrox26 May 2019
The story in this one was pretty lame, but I loved the male leads: Nathan Parsons at the male lead was very sexy and appealing. Loved his voice. It was so great to see Robby Benson again. He has certainly aged well, and is even more attractive than he was in his youth. Both of these actors are responsible for the high rating from me. Although, sometimes Robby Benson delivered his lines like he was a trifle constipated. Sorry Robby, I saw what you were trying to do there character-wise, but.... I also liked the acting of Shannon Chan-Kent as Gina. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the character of Abby. She struck me as needy, whiny, and not too bright. I don't think it was the actress so much as the way her character was written. As others have mentioned, the depiction of farm life was silly and ignorant. Talk about lazy. But it did provide some laughs.

Just as expected
jzel-9875720 May 2019
Read an unusual amount or severely negative reviews of this movie. This movie is no better or worse than an other Hallmark movie with this well worn plot line. Reading the reviews before watching the movie, (I had paused it to check out some of the actors), I was tempted to delete the film, they were so extremely negative. It followed the same script all these small town/big city movies use. Either you like them or you don't. Such extreme vitriol, I think was unwarranted.

Warning: Spoilers
This was horrible from the beginning. I finished it just because I had nothing else going on. The acting and accents are horrible. There was no chemistry between the love interests. Who dressed her???? She wore the most ridiculous outfits. It was just a ridiculous story line and the relationship conflict between the father and daughter just seemed so fake. So she went to Yale, has a growing business, and her dad isn't proud of her until she can drive a tractor around that is basically one size up from a riding lawn mower??? No. Get some better writers please.

Good, light Hallmark escape.
bjmalerich24 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this story in Texas, the country ranch/internet series theme and the actors. This story was a little more believable romance than the usual Hallmark movie. The leads spent more time together in several scenes, and had more conversation giving the relationship history and the spark of romance rekindling. It's not "fall in love in a week-end". I thought chemistry was captured in their lingering speculative eyes locking and the support the characters gave each other in the story line. Jonna was interesting to me and attractive. She was believable as a internet wanna be. Nathen captured the idea of his character and roughly handsome. I enjoyed his character's honesty about his feelings. I enjoyed that she became less "full of herself" and more appreciative of her roots by the end. I even liked the no promise ending. I gave 8 stars as some details of Texas, ranch life, etc were off. (I would enjoy a series on this.)

It wasnt thaaat bad
majoq21 May 2019
After reading some reviews, I thought I was going to watch a lousy movie. But instead I kind of liked it. Texas is amazing, those green pastures, the music. Both main characters were believable. And at times I even laughed! The one thing that surprised me was Robbie Benson s bad acting. I mean it was really bad. The rest of the movie is ok. Enough for a cold day in Argentina.

Really?
pjking22716 May 2019
So this young woman was raised on a farm? Now I wasn't raised on a farm, but, I did live in Texas and I knew enough not to dress like she did to work on the farm. Also, why did her father need her to be there? There were lots of men already working there! Stupid! I can usually sit through most Hallmark movies, not this. Please Hallmark your shows are so freaking predictable. Change something!

After reading the reviews, I was just about to delete this movie, but then I saw some good reviews. We really liked this movie. Good plot. The actors had chemistry. The ranch scenes were funny. It's typical Hallmark, but cute and wholesome.

Nathan Parsons is the best part of this Hallmark romance.
cgvsluis27 September 2022
I really like Nathan Parsons and have since his time on General Hospital as Luke's son. I was happy to see him get a lead role in a film. He plays Ryan and is the romantic lead in this Hallmark film. He is also a small town Texas former sweetheart of an internet sensation who is all about New England. Abby has an internet channel all about New England, and is being groomed by a national sponsor when her dad hurts his shoulder and needs help on his Texas ranch. Abby goes back to the ranch where she meets and reconnects with her childhood sweetheart Ryan.

Fun contrast between New England and Texas, but I liked the sweet hometown feel of Texas, including where the film ends up.

Romantic, but one of the middle of the road offerings on Hallmark.

Feeling of Nausea
aiyyawni19 May 2019
I got maybe 20 minutes into this movie before I couldn't stomach it anymore. I don't expect Oscar worthy performances or groundbreaking stories from a Hallmark movie, but I need a little more effort than what was delivered. Lead actress is not ready to carry even a Hallmark movie. So flat and awkward and just bad. Robby Benson was miscast but he should definitely be in more of these movies. Lead actor was decent although it seemed like he was doing more of an Elvis impersonation than a cowboy. I'm from the country in California and even I could tell how unauthentic the ranching life is portrayed...and no rancher is going to a boutique like that to pick up "work" clothes. Maybe it got better towards the end but I highly doubt it. Don't waste your Sunday.

Jonna Walsh is seriously miscast as a Texas girl. Her So-Cal accent is jarring and seriously mars my enjoyment of this movie. Not one of Hallmark's better movies due to the flawed premise and the miscast female lead.

A Feeling of Home
allmoviesfan15 April 2023
Another of the Hallmark trope where someone returns to their hometown after an unspecified but long period of time away.

Abby (Jonna Walsh) has built a career on doing web videos centred around all things New England, including convincing her would-be investors that she is a native of New England when in fact she is from Texas. Which wouldn't be a major problem except that Abby needs to return to her small town of Langston, Texas to help her injured father, with whom she has a somewhat rocky relationship, on his ranch. She runs into her ex-boyfriend, Ryan (played by Australia's Nathan Parsons) who works for her father. She ends up having to try and keep the fact that she isn't a native New Englander but a native Texan whilst reconnecting with Ryan.

Not the best Hallmark movie ever, but far from the worst, too. A Feeling of Home sits somewhere in the middle. Walsh and Parsons are okay together.

Couldn't hold my attention
MickyG33325 January 2023
5.6 stars.

Something about the southerners in this film is off-putting. I don't know if it's the twang, the mannerisms, or just the style of clothing mixed with the Texas countryside. In my opinion, most of Texas is one big desert, and it adds little to the production value of a romance movie such as 'A Feeling of Home'. Pertaining to Texas, a movie needs to be something about a bunch of Rangers that were uncouth and scarily proficient at their craft: hunting down and killing miscreants. It's almost like the cattle ranchers of that region are bursting with angst waiting for the old ways to come back so they can load themselves full of six-shooters and go to town.

Both leads are new to me. I don't really like either one of them and the chemistry is non-existent. She went to Yale? No way she exudes anything akin to the civilized female she is attempting to portray. And he was accepted to Yale but instead went to college to be a rancher? Does not compute. Immediate disdain for the rest of this failed attempt at believability.

I could not get through this movie, it's too foreign and antiquated for my tastes. Go watch some breezy John Wayne flick where he's an archaic rancher if you want the same reminiscence of a defunct southern culture.

Not good
Pensluvr14 May 2019
I came here to see if anyone else thought this was as bad as I did. It seems like it was everyone's first time for this movie: acting, directing, writing....all of it just bad. Only things that were half way decent were the secondary characters.

LOVED IT
jewelch28 December 2020
I found "A Feeling of Home" to be one of the better Hallmark releases. Nathan Parsons gives an authentic performance as "Ryan" a Texas rancher, Jonna Walsh holds her own as Abby, and I was more than pleasantly surprised to find one of my old favorites, Robby Benson, playing Abby's father! My only complaint after watching this show is that now I am now craving some Texas BBQ, made with "Yellow Rose" sauce! James Welch Henderson, Arkansas 12/26/2020

This was not a typical Hallmark movie. No idea how they cast this horrible movie, but high school productions have better acting. Love Hallmark movies but this was worse than grade D movie. Terrible acting all around.

Flat, Zero Chemistry, Bad Acting, Cobbled Storyline
jrfhy13 May 2019
I love Hallmark movies. I look forward to the new ones that are now released every Saturday. I am giddy when we start the Christmas season because I know I will have thirty Hallmark movies to comfort me through the season. I love the modern day fairy tales that they spin and I am usually able to get caught up in the pictures they paint. Every once in a while there is a complete flop, and A Feeling of Home is one of those. The acting was flat and stale. The story was boring and cobbled together. There was zero chemistry between the love interests and between the female lead and her Dad. The female "manager" was super annoying and had zero depth. The attempts at Texas accents were atrocious (I am a native Texan who grew up in Texas). The attempts to reflect the Texas culture were embarrassing. I read that the producer (who also plays the Dad) is from Dallas, Texas, but rather than influencing the cast and crew to accurately reflect the diversity of Texas culture (I mean, it is a big state!), he defaulted to the stereotypical version of Texas (and his accent was obviously put on and he did NOT look like what a Texas rancher would look like!). I had to force myself to sit through the whole movie - it was that bad. I didn't care about the characters. There were parts of the storyline that could have been developed to make it more interesting, although they would have to replace the actors with ones who can actually act. Maybe Hallmark should pull back a little when it comes to how quickly they are churning out movies, because I think they are starting to sacrifice quality.

in Texas
Kirpianuscus25 July 2021
The basic sin is the deep unrealism of story. Sure, it is A Hallmark production and the romance must be the only significant. But something, almost at the each scene, seems just wrong. To not be very critic, a good points exists - the decent portrait of father, more a sketch, off course, of. Robby Benson. But the formula Connecticut versus Texas and so easy/ enthusiastic acceptance of the boss of it is just awful. So, a story in Texas.
