I disagree with the other reviewers
jeanettekearley6 August 2019
This may not be the best movie but, I love this movie because it takes my mind off the biggest world problems for a while. It is light hearted, a little whimsical somewhat. Basically it is a fairytale, but I love it. Sure, the part about the island could be a little deeper, but this is suppose to be a love story, not a movie solving problems.

Summer vibes and beautiful scenery.
MIssM1926 May 2019
So many reviews for this one...but what can I say? I like it. It is a cute Hallmark movie that makes you roll your eyes every once in a while, you can't expect it to be perfect.

Chris McNally plays Tom, a boat captain who looks very good in uniform and chan charm anyone. Leah Renee is a high school teacher who wants to save an island iconic to the small town she has lived her whole life.

Things I liked: The scenery, no one can argue with that, that place was breathtaking. We see new faces in this movie, one gets tired of all movies having the same secondary actors. Summer vibe (of course). The soundtrack was great. The aeriel shots and definitely the kiss in the middle of the movie (yes!). Good chemistry.

Things I didn't like: Too many white, camera perfect people. Seriously, diversity Hallmark, ever heard of it? Too many weddings. The typical assumptions a character makes. That cliche simply does not work.

Was it perfect? Nope. Was I entertained for an hour and a half? Yes. It's worth watching.

Sweet story fits for Hallmark
Jackbv12327 July 2019
I would have liked to see less environmental protest and more time between the leads. Still, they managed to spend some quality time dancing away from one another and then closer again.

I didn't care for so many reviews rudely criticizing Leah Renee especially for her voice. It is unfortunate that Renee would be perfectly type-cast for a much less flattering role. Her natural tendencies make it hard to give her the respect she deserves. She made a good effort to carry off her role as an intelligent, sensible young lady, but admittedly it was with mixed results. She does portray a very sweet, sensitive and caring woman. And I think she connects with Chris McNally. McNally was solid throughout.

It's also unfortunate that the plot was a bit simplistic and predictable. Still, if you aren't turned off by an actress's voice, it was a nice romance story.

I liked the final sequence.

Sweet movie but some flat acting
mguelkerwilson19 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Like most Hallmark movies, this follows the same formula, girl meets boy, they butt heads, then realize feelings for each other, a conflict brings them together, eventually ending in a happily ever after. Oh, and not without a former boyfriend/girlfriend throwing a monkey wrench into it all. It's predictable but still cute and relaxing to watch.

This one was a bit disappointing in the casting. Renee is beautiful, but her acting is pretty flat and not believable. Some poor writing contributed to that (why wasn't there more time spent on demonstrating her commitment to the island she loved?) - it seemed like her path to opposing the development and then speaking against it at a council meeting was rushed, and Tom's involvement to help her was passing out fliers? Her speech wasn't passionate or well thought out enough, in my opinion, to make me believe the council changed their minds so readily, even though you knew, of course, that was going to happen.

Chris McNally as Tom was great, have loved him in other Hallmark projects, especially in When Calls the Heart. It seemed like he always had to try and pick up the slack when Renee's acting fell flat. The chemistry between them was pretty good but not enough to make up for the rest of the movie's flaws.

functional Hallmark
SnoopyStyle11 September 2019
Claire Richards (Leah Renee) is a high school biology teacher in a small seaside community. Blue Island is her beloved place and a favorite of her late mother. She has a fishy meet-cute with Tom Hastings (Chris McNally). She is shocked when he turns out to be the new boat captain taking her class to Blue Island. She is further shocked to find surveyors on the island as the town prepares to sell it to a resort developer. She is further shocked again when her ex Jason McClure turns out to be the lead lawyer working for the developer.

I like the story. It's a simple triangle with a dash of saving the neighborhood. The meet-cute is fine. The splash of fish is what sells it. The lead is fine although her voice isn't great. The guy is fine although not that exceptional. There is a little bit of danger which helps the tension a little bit. As a Hallmark romance, this is fine.

It's ok!

I love Hallmark movies but this one was off a little, did not see a big chemistry between the main couple. The male lead was very good and connected, was not crazy about the female lead.

Delightful movie in a great setting
drmikeb21 May 2019
As someone who has watched lots of Hallmark movies over the years, I was so glad to see one where the story was not set around a winery or a chocolate factory. Hallmark has really over used those scenarios, especially lately. This one was filmed in beautiful Victoria, BC and I was especially pleased to see Fisgard Lighthouse featured in it as well. I have had the pleasure of visiting and photographing there and it really is a spectacular place. I enjoyed this story a little more since it was a bit different than most of their typical romantic movies. I was very glad to see Leah Renee as the lead actress too. She has been in a few HM movies, but it has been awhile since her last one. She is a very beautiful and talented young actress who conveys a sweet personality in this movie. Chris McNally, who plays her love interest also did a good job and the two had good on-screen chemistry. The story still has some typical ups and downs you see in most all the HM movies, but still kept my interest. I hope Hallmark will continue to produce movies like this one with new and different stories.

Probably too generous
dsklodginski26 May 2019
I did enjoy the scenery and setting a lot which is why I gave it a 6 and stuck with it. The story seemed somewhat more unbelievable than most hallmark movies. I liked the lead actor although he seemed a bit too casual to be former military. The lead actress's voice almost did me in but I managed to ignore it after a while. It wasn't a total waste of time but there are better movies on this channel.

Characters
mdaniels51127 August 2020
For all that people have issues with the main actress, my problem is actually with her character. I feel like her main appeal for the hero was her beauty. Despite her passion about the island, she's just genuinely not an interesting character, and it was hard to feel why she was so important to him, particularly when she made things so difficult. The wedding when she was mad at him? She acted immaturely, and he didn't deserve that. It's usually pretty easy for me to like main characters - even in Hallmark movies - but this one was a dud. I liked him a lot - I just thought he deserved better.

Refreshing
Really liked this Hallmark movie. I am so happy Hallmark didn't go all predictable as they usually do. Glad they decided not to let him or her hear or see something that is not real and then lose the other person because of their assumptions; this is usually the boring direction of most Hallmark movie.

Decent movie, if they had a different lead actress
tashinaknight11 July 2019
This is one of the better Hallmark movies lately, and the lead actor has a ton of charisma, but man, that lead actress. What were they thinking. Sure, she is pretty, but to be an actress implies that one should have to be able to act, yes? Her voice is bad, and she just couldn't summon up any ability to carry off her lines. I hope this is her last Hallmark movie. I won't watch another with her.

Hallmark is about falling in Love
kjp-8841819 May 2019
It's not the deepest story I've viewed on the channel but these movies aren't always about the deep story lines. They are always about falling in love. The ups and downs and everything in between. Its a very nice love story with beautiful scenery along the way. Watch the hallmark movies for what they're worth and enjoy the ride.

Nice story
gabycyr-1103726 January 2020
The story is pretty, the setting is beautiful and the main actor does a perfect job. The leading actress' acting looks force to me. It's not natural.

Chris is adorable but needs a better leading lady.
countessemily1 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There are aspects of this movie that I really enjoy. First off it was so appropriate the leading lady was a teacher and NOT INTRESTED IN THE PARENT OF ONE OF HER STUDENTS. The fact her love interest is someone completely unrelated to a school setting is a major plus.

Secondly- I Love Chris McNally in the movie! So believable in the role of a fisherman (who was or is in the Navy) who wants to travel the world on his new boat. I always say this is like he is Lucas's (his character on When Calls the Heart) great grandson or great nephew as their are similarities within the two characters.

He was such a perfect fit for the part!

What does not work about this movie is the leading lady: her voice is so baby like, kind of makes her ditzy or something. When she made the speech about why Blue Island needs saving it was almost laughable as you can't take her seriously. Also the part of her towards the beginning when she was doing a table seating plan with her friend and she said: "I'm a big girl" her tone of voice suggested otherwise- I could not believe her words because of her voice!

Overall, though this is one of my favorite movies Chris has done so far (the other being The Sweetest Heart). Its got a stronger storyline than the average Hallmark movie and the scenery is gorgeous. When Tom and Claire are out sailing, it's so beautiful on the water. Certianly worth a watch- and even worth rewatching when it airs on Hallmark.

Sailing Into Love
allmoviesfan3 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What's this? The rarest of rare events: a Hallmark movie that doesn't roll out all the tropes and plot devices that make most of their movies seem like they all came from the same writer?

Starring Kevin McGarry and Leah Renee - whose chemistry, I should note here, is bang-on - and full of sumptuous shots of water, island and harbour towns, Sailing into Love tells the story of Navy veteran and yacht captain Tom and local girl Claire, a teacher who is heavily invested in saving a small island offshore from her hometown which has become the target of developers. They meet by accident near the start of the movie and sparks fly pretty quickly - as you would expect. Granted, there is the Hallmark trope of a returning ex-boyfriend in this one, but he is a bigger part of the plot than just being the guy Claire used to date and the guy who wants her back again. There was no awkward moment or misunderstanding that characters in these movies always seem to jump to incredibly wrong conclusions over. A decent script, some good acting, wonderful scenery and a nice message about tradition and keeping things the way they are.

Everything comes together nicely. Every now and again Hallmark gets it very right - this is one of those times. Sailing into Love is an engaging and enjoyable way to pass ninety minutes.

boring
Kirpianuscus21 June 2022
About Hallmark movies, the word nice seems, almost always, the fair one. In this case it is not. Not for acting, not for cliches, not for predactibility. But for too many weddings, for supporting actors and landscape as only reasonable pillars , for something used again and again who, after a not short experience across Hallmark products, seems good for nap .

Yes, I admitt, maybe it is my fault. A middle age old man can resist less to the waves of romance and very simple stories in which is clear from the first scene. And I admitt, Chris McNally is more than hadsome in uniform and Leah Renee is far to be bad as biology teacher. But the only good point, for me, can be only ...the lighthouse. Real, real beautiful the trip of main characters in its rooms.

So , Hallmark.

Sweetest Love Story
jcec-3244819 August 2019
This Hallmark movie has an interesting plot and interesting filming. The chemistry is excellent between the two lead actors as the plot unfolds. Although the plot of Hallmark movies are generally predictable, this one was a few more twists. The scenery is absolute breathtaking and the film score is memorable.

Sailing Into Love
studioAT13 January 2023
Though it very much follows the standard Hallmark Channel Original Movie template pretty much to the letter this does prove to ultimately be a lovely affair.

For me the two things that make or break a Hallmark film are whether the story holds up and whether the two leads have chemistry, and on both counts here the film succeeds.

Full of nice moments this ends up being a nice way to spend eighty something minutes. It goes easy on the drama, and actually doesn't pander by giving you everything you thought it might.

So if you're looking for a Hallmark film that fits their standard template and is enjoyable enough fare you can't go wrong with this film.

Not the best Hallmark movie
robsuey21 May 2019
I have to agree with the other reviewers that the lead actresses voice is horrible and irritating. She also sometimes speaks her lines super fast. The Male lead is actually pretty good so together they make an awkward pair...Victoria British Columbia is beautiful however.

Fabulous Setting.
kevend-168187 October 2020
Another really entertaining Hallmark movie. A different storyline to a wonderful love story. A lot of criticism for Leah Renee but I like her and she did well as the lead lady with a good chemistry with Chris McNally. I didnt have a problem with her voice, other reviewers are too picky, shr should lead in more of Hallmarks romances. The scenery was spectacular and made this another Hallmark film I just had to watch from start to finish. I will watch this again. Well done Leah and Chris and well done Hallmark. Put a smile on my face.

Five sails of summer love
MickyG33323 May 2023
7.7 stars.

I really like both leads, never seen her in a lead role yet that I can recall. He is always a fun actor to watch. I think they hit it off really well. The scenery is nice, but it's a far cry from reality with her whole fighting to preserve the island agenda. Just because she has so many memories there, it's just not feasible. Nobody does that much work to "save" an island, especially an island that is not even large enough to do anything on it. At least some angles look like it's about the size of a football stadium, while other angles make it seem huge. I was dealing with the illusion of expecting something very profound, but at the end of this journey is the same climax-or anti-climax of a oft beaten to death theme - girl is hard to get, guy is too good to be true, guy gets girl.

Overused trope at play.
savethewatchmaker27 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As many other reviewers have pointed out, this movie's biggest plus is the beautiful scenery and nautical ambience brought by the coastline atmosphere. It definitely lives up to its title with lots of stunning shots of sailboats on the water (although near the end, these sweeping nature shots seemed to be a bit overdone - more to pad out the movie's runtime than anything else), but the movie is dragged down by poor acting and an unbelievably predictable plot.

Leading lady Leah Renee has certainly received her fair share of critique in some of these comments, and while yes, her voice is much too impassive and veering into high-pitched vapid girl territory, her bad acting stood out much more to me. There is never a point when she doesn't make it obvious that she is reading lines rather than attempting to actually be her character; her flat portrayal and wooden intonation are a constant reminder to the audience of her lack of acting skills. To make matters worse, her character isn't all too likable either; most notable is the scene in which her ex-boyfriend plants a seed about her love interest betraying her and she refuses to talk this out with said love interest. Her constant brush-offs and cold shoulders during a misunderstanding she could've easily fixed with a bit of grown-up conversation are a cliche of women in television that's getting downright tired.

The movie's chief problem, however, is that its B-story, next to the blossoming love, is that a beloved nearby island may or may not be for sale for the sake of building a hotel resort. The movie digs its heels into this plotpoint, completely oblivious to the fact that the audience doesn't share the same passion for this relatively insignificant island as its main characters do (specifically, the female lead, who seems to be hanging on to childhood memories more than anything else). What makes this storyline even more frustrating is that Hallmark has milked the "evil development company wants to change the beloved town" angle to death. It's a miracle if you can find a movie these days where a sentimental building isn't being torn down for the sake of condos/hotels/golf courses, and the town has to rally around the preservation of said building. It's getting unthinkingly old.

The film's only saving grace is its scenery and the rest of its cast, who do an adequate job carrying the movie around the dead weight that is Leah Renee.

Gorgeous Locations Perfectly Matched By The Sweet Love Story
kmpearce-5089720 May 2019
This film is yet another Hallmark gem. Not only did the entire cast have fantastic chemistry, the script also flowed beautifully; with only a few minor hiccups here and there, it was both predictable and yet not in the best way. Most importantly though, the connection between Tom and Claire was on fire, and developed wonderfully; also, Chris McNally NEEDS to be in more Hallmark films.
