Control/ power
mehobulls31 December 2020
I feel like people aren't paying enough attention to the scenes. The details are in the dialogue. The guy in prison giving him advice is a Desire affiliate. Desire wanted Kofi to take the fall for the crime after he got arrested because they needed to protect Charlie and Michael. After Kofis lawyer starts digging and looking into the dirty cops (who work for Charlie) they just need Kofi to disappear so that the case will disappear and they won't be implicated. Desire at this point wants Kofi dead. They tell their inside man to convince Kofi that resisting the Baxter's is futile. Saying they have juice on the inside, the outside and on both sides of the law. This is a gang who protected him, pledged to take care of his family and ultimately convinced him to take the fall for a crime he didn't commit. He knew he couldn't trust guards or cops to keep him safe.. he was pretty much out of options. The Desire member likely convinced him he needed to sacrifice himself in order to keep his family safe.

Depressing
Hillius27 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I had such high hopes that with Bryan Cranston attached this was going to be a good series, but each episode watched is even more depressing than the last. Cranston shines like usual in all of his scenes, but his co stars are so far below him in both ability and charm there isn't really any other character good enough to offset the horrible story that is being told. The only real highlight of this episode was seeing Margo Martindale again who is always excellent in everything that I have seen her in.

Nobody goes through life without making at least a few mistakes they regret, but it is so difficult to watch someone as young as Adam repeatedly making stupid mistakes and bad decisions over and over. How this young man passed his drivers test is anybody's guess. He doesn't seem to have any regard for road safety; first not stopping while searching for his medication and now putting his lap on his grandma's lap while she is driving. He also seems to have very little regard for the law, paying almost no attention to the CO's who instruct him that taking pictures of prisons is not allowed. He seems to enjoy hiding behind his father's robes, yet gets mad at his father for using his power to protect him. He is also sleeping with his teacher who doesn't look a day over 17 herself, that's always a good idea right? The word I have been trying to avoid using to describing him just fits so well I have to use it anyway. This kids is a total spaz and watching him act is painful. I agree, he is the weakest link on this show already full of one dimensional characters, all of whom lack any backstory that might make the viewer care about what happens to them.

I've really been hoping for more from Jimmy Baxter. I mean why is he considered so vicious that nobody wants to cross him or his family? I've seen little to attest to any viciousness, most of what Micheal Stuhlberg has done so far is sit around looking mopey. It takes more than a temper tantrum to impress me, unless he is just a figure head and his wife is the cold blooded killer in the family which seems to be the case here. I wish someone would please tell me how destroying the poor Jones residence in anyway inflicts any actual damage upon the gang. It's ridiculous to hit back like this, especially to kill off a family that has no power of any kind. If the Baxter's had wanted to hurt the gang why not kill a leader or go after their money? This bombing was only symbolic at best. The vape smoking daughter is as horrible to watch as Adam and listening to her ridiculous lines makes my eyes roll back in my head.

The first few episodes I really hung on every word hoping for a really good story here, but as this series progresses this has become the one I turn on before bed to help me sleep. Its' not that I don't think I can finish this series, I"m just not sure I want to.

I rated this 6/10 with on point extra for Martindale.

Don't believe the 3-4 star reviews. And don't believe the 10 star reviews either.
rmccabe-3969529 December 2020
Here we have what's pretty much a filler episode, but the acting and direction is on point once again. This is a great story, but 10 episode might be a little too much to stretch out this plot.

I am going to continue with high hopes because I know the story will speed up again for a climax pretty soon.

And the Emmy goes to Michael Stuhlbarg!
BiggaHD27 December 2020
Michael Stuhlbarg (Jimmy Baxter) did an outstanding performance. What a contrast to the Fargo character. I'm not talking about the level of quality, I'm talking about the difference in characters and the level of their insanity. In Fargo it's all about anxiety, here he's a full blown psychopath, meaning, in this series, he's V. M. Varga (I hope you watch season 3). Besides that, this episode was amazingly done. It's full of thrill, suspense, action, and "Oh, No" moments.

Meh - amazing actors
abelov-211-80071828 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Damn do I love the actors, I could watch these guys read the three mice ala christopher walken. But honestly im giving it a 10 for acting but the story is just getting a little annoying, Adam is a complete idiot of a character I have never met someone so stupid that is actively trying to get caught. The writers gave him the intelligence of a 6 year old boy extremely unlikeable character right now.

The plot is currently super slow moving just slowly involving more and more people into the deception. This reminds of of a few Ray Donovan episodes that I did housework during, but again the actors my god are they good... I could watch them review floortiles.

Better episode than the last.
Brettyboy00731 January 2021
Episode 4 is better than the last episode. We get more in depth with Kofi's family and Jimmy's family. Charlie and Michael are still discussing Lee and how she could potentially undo everything they've done. Adam is a little better in this episode trying to hold himself together but at the end it seems he's going further into getting as far away from this as possible. The ending of this episode is a really big shock that will definitely have consequences.

Part 4

Warning: Spoilers
Adam's decisions are just so baffling here. There was an Apple TV+ series with a similar tone and similar questionable decisions from a teenager, and I get that same vibe from Adam.

Jimmy Baxter is an amazing actor, strong act, The best thing about this series is that there are no dull actors, they're all good. I hope the series continues this way.

Family dinner.
kelboy1024 January 2023
Not so much to go on in this part which mainly consists of a family dinner where lies could spill during the moment of breaking bread. The characters are still very interesting though. From Michael developing relationship with Lee to Adams overwhelming guilt. His auntie Elisabeth steps in to fill some of the parenthood gap. Jimmy Baxter is pushed further into exacting revenge and proving why he is the crime lord.

Some nice early transition shots between the car being scrapped and forensics studying Kofi's corpse. Still pain haunts in remembrance of Adams mother, Michael wife.

This episode mainly recaps on what has been and gone.

Still waiting this series to be interesting...
alp_erel28 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was really excited when I saw a series with Bryan Cranston leading from Showtime but this is just getting hard to watch.

Dog taking out what it has hidden just as everybody randomly gathered for dinner, the kids wierd outbursts of emotions its just very predictable and dissapointing.

I hope it will get good soon because I cant hold on. There is just a limit of what great actors can do, even they are not enough for this bad writing.

Jimmy doesn't run the mob
qstiumnh28 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
For anybody that's ever watched anything about the mob, they understand hierarchy and the danger of appearing weak. Jimmy, wouldn't last 1 week once it's known his wife is making "family business" decisions. Judge Desiato does so much to shield his son from the crime, but seems dumbfounded by asking his friend " Who do you think did it? I think people are confused by Cranston's great acting. That doesn't automatically mean this series is a 9 or a 10.

Filler episode in 10 episode season not good sign
Zedyeti24 February 2021
Episode really drags and it's predictable. Some great acting scenes though, but I wouldn't say it's enough to save it. This show has become something I watch not because it's good, but because I think it will get good and so far that's not exactly happening. A mostly great cast is wasted on a dumb kid and loose script. Really hopes it gets better than this.

Horrible casting
hpcmakeup12 January 2021
The son is terribly miscast! It should have been someone you like and are rooting for. Handsome and sweet. Adam is weird and boring. You don't really care what happens to him. He was with his teacher the first scene of the series and nothing ever came of that...what was the point??

Part Four
Prismark1028 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Kofi Jones is murdered in prison by Carlo Baxter.

Surprisingly his death is swept under the carpet by the sheriff. Something about not wanting federal authorities taking over the prison.

Well it was a clunky get out by the writer.

Pressure is piling up on Jimmy Baxter by his increasingly Lady Macbeth wife.

Judge Desiato is also rocked by the news of Kofi's death. Another needless casualty of his son's actions.

Yet the episode was just treading water. It was a filler episode. It introduced the Judge's mother in law who also happens to be a senator.

She cares for Adam but has little time for the Judge.

If you don't know what's right or wrong about something, why try to deliver it as a message. Bring out the quran out of nowhere and said "that's what muslim believed"... you think that gonna enrich to story telling ?

Reality check-4th review
rjb-383222 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ok- Corrupt school teacher too. Why not. Everybody else is. Police taking basket ball hoops down. Really? Has that ever happened anywhere? Don't think so. You'd have protests. It'd be on the news. Silly. Judge visits black family. Really? Why? This is nonsense. That would be on the news. Religious mob boss wife. Well- that is laughable unless she's insane. Ok. I'll just buy that she's insane to make it somewhat believable. Her husband is insane- why not her. Wait- can both mob husband and mob wife be insane at the same time? Judge's son gets brave in school. Where was that kid the day he killed the boy in the hood. People don't change that fast. And why couldn't the mother in law believe that her son and son in law went to the graveyard later in the day than she did? Was she there all day watching the place? And everybody is at dinner - a pretty strange get together all at once. Nobody has anything else to do? They should have invite the county prosecutor as well. And then he pulls out a bloody rage. This is all just too absurd. Still pretty good acting- just bad writing. And judges son meets mob boss's daughter on the street. Well, all of sudden it's a pretty small town. Mob boss blows up dead boys house. Why? Insanity. It makes no sense. Gotta go with a 4 on this one. Hope it get better but i'm not optimistic at this point.

Disappointing
coenvw28 December 2020
The three previous eps were amazing, and I was really stoked for Part Four. However.... nothing happened (until the end). Very slow moving, almost boring. Extremely disappointing, as I had such high expectations!
