Last year, we shared the news that Fremantle’s Euston Films is set to produce a six-part horror comedy series called Wrecked for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer. Euston’s Noemi Spanos and BBC’s Tommy Bulfin executive produced the show, which has been written by Ryan J. Brown – who said he “wanted to create a piece of genre entertainment that had the savvy teen sharpness of Scream, the unsettling atmosphere of The Shining and the strange upstairs, downstairs mythology of The Cabin in the Woods.” Wrecked is now set to premiere at London’s Fright Fest on August 26th (the show will launch on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer later this autumn), and in anticipation of the premiere a batch of images from the show have arrived online… images that seem to reveal that the killer wears a duck costume and is called Quacky! The images can be seen...

Stars: Jack Rowan, Michael Hough, Fra Fee, Robert Nairne, Nigel O’Neill, Louisa Harland | Written and Directed by Chris Baugh
Despite its title Boys from County Hell isn’t another backwoods hicksploitation film. It’s actually an Irish horror comedy that pits a road crew against the Emerald Isle’s own species of bloodsucker. Writer/director Chris Baugh (Bad Day for the Cut) has expanded the short he did with co-writer Brendan Mullin to feature-length, and the results definitely don’t suck.
Eugene (Jack Rowan; Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands) lives in Six Mile Hill, a rural Irish town where, according to legend, Bram Stoker got the inspiration for Dracula. Eugene and his buddies S.P. and William (Fra Fee; Monochrome) get a bit of amusement scaring tourists who’ve come to see the cairn that marks the grave of Abhartach the legendary bloodsucker who inspired Stoker.
But all is not well in Eugene’s life.

One of the biggest challenges in taking on one of the mainstay subgenres of horror is how to put a new spin on it. The vampire genre is one that some critics might say has been fully explored. Vampires have run the gamut from terrifying to funny to sparkly. What next? How do you keep it interesting? Specifically, how do you tell Dracula without simply retelling Dracula? You have to make Dracula a bit different. Alter the origins. Change the rules. Which is exactly what Chris Baugh does with his new film Boys from County Hell.
Six Mile Hill is a tiny Irish community whose only claim to fame is the belief that it may be home to the grave of one of Ireland’s most famous monsters. According to legend, Abhartach was an undead creature who fed on human blood. It is believed that this legend may have served...

First, some history: “Dracula” author Bram Stoker, the ostensible inventor of our modern idea of the vampire, was Irish. Now, some retconning: in the world of Chris Baugh’s plucky horror comedy “Boys from County Hell,” Stoker’s villain was inspired by the evil exploits of Abhartach, a resident in the tiny Irish village of Six Mile Hill who delighted in drinking the blood of his neighbors. A local offed Abhartach and he was buried beneath a tall cairn of rocks in a grassy field, never to be seen again. Maybe.
Such is the world of the shiftless Eugene (Jack Rowan) and his best pal William (Fra Fee). The Abhartach legend is a fun way to distract silly tourists, but these local boys can’t shake the sense that there might actually be something to the tall tale. Northern Irish filmmaker Baugh, best known for his Sundance feature “Bad Day for the Cut,...

How much of Ireland did Bram Stoker put into the pages of “Dracula?” Certainly, the country’s moody woodlands, swampy bogs, crumbling castles, and awe-inducing coastlines played their part in establishing the atmosphere of the legendary tale. According to certain folks in the sleepy, fictional, Irish town of Six Mile Hill, their cairn and its ties to the legend of Abhartach, played its own role in sparking the imagination of Stoker, who once visited the sleepy hamlet.

There are a couple of things we all know about vengeful spirits that live in haunted houses. First, they love to become friends with little kids. And secondly, these evil apparitions can make the simplest, most sweet games turn into absolute nightmares. Both of these are readily apparent in the new Shudder film, “The Banishing.”

Sometimes you have to wonder what the hell characters in horror films are thinking when they do something stupid? Of course, for the guys in “Boys from County Hell,” you could probably blame alcohol and the close proximity of heavy construction machinery for why they decided to wake up a vampire.
