Josephine Langford is most well known for playing college student Tessa Young in the "After" movies. The franchise, which is inspired by Anna Todd's best-selling book series of the same name, chronicles Tessa's tumultuous relationship with Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) - a mysterious bad boy with a dark past. Exclusive: The meteoric rise of women’s soccer is continuing. The origins of the women’s game is to be explored in a feature from director Farren Blackburn and Free Turn Entertainment.
Lily and the Rockets is set against the backdrop of World War I and is based on Rebecca Stevens’ novel of the same name. News of the UK-made drama could hardly be more timely, with England’s Lionesses set to take on Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday in Australia.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

Going into this Labor Day weekend, things were looking pretty grim for the box office. There were only two low-profile new wide releases and two re-releases, a movie from 1975 and another somehow getting almost 4,000 theaters. It was known that Saturday would be “National Cinema Day” with many theater chains and smaller houses offering 3 movie tickets all day long, but who knew that it would have theaters swarming unlike anytime pre-covid? Apparently, the people who came up with the idea for the promotion knew it, and the plan worked, as people were out in force at movie theaters nationwide on Saturday.
Due to the huge bump in business Saturday, it was hard to fully comprehend the impact National Cinema Day might have on the overall weekend based on Sunday morning estimates, although it looked like we could have a close race between three or four movies.

Gimmicks: They work! Most theaters reduced ticket prices to 3 September 3 in recognition of the National Association of Theater Owners’ just-invented National Cinema Day. As a result, people bought more than 8 million tickets — the most in a single day since each of the three first days of “Avengers: Endgame” in April 2019.
Financially and psychologically, this was a bonanza for theaters. Half or more of the ticket revenue went to distributors; for exhibitors, it was all about the popcorn, the Red Vines, and their generous profit margins. For one day at least, money rolled in. The long-term impact is Tbd: Prices have returned to their normal average of over 10 and the next few weeks are bleak.
One side effect of the 3 ticket is it wreaks havoc on box-office estimates. With the top four films within 600,000 of each other, and an additional Monday to come for the four-day weekend, take the order below as an educated guess.

Film premiere and headlines spilling from a trio of fests in full swing (Venice), just starting (Telluride) and queued up (Toronto) have indie exhibitors and distributors the most hopeful since Covid hit that a stream of new films could fire up the arthouse market.
Tod Fields’ Cate Blanchett-starrer Tár (debuted to a six-minute standing ovation in Venice), Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones And All (also just screened on the Lido), and Empire of Light with Olivia Colman, set to world premiere at Telluride, and a raft of others are slated for fall theatrical release. A deluge of specialty films from Sundance and Cannes will also move into U.S. cinemas later this month.
“Arthouse theaters are behind where they were in 2019, but I think this fall things will come racing back. These festivals have the goods,” said John Vanco, Gm of New York’s IFC Center.

“Gigi & Nate” begins with two leaps. The first is out of terror, when Gigi, a capuchin monkey at a sad-sack roadside petting zoo, tries to steer clear of her “caretaker.” The second is the sweet leap of boy-joy that 17-year-old Nate Gibson takes off a rocky ledge and into a pond. In this amiable, if unnecessarily manipulative, movie about the human-animal bond — as well as the different forms resilience can take — that fateful second leap will lead the young man and the monkey to each other.

I had a great time watching “Gigi & Nate” from director Nick Hamm. The incredible true story of a teenage quadriplegic (Charlie Rowe as Nate) and the capuchin monkey who helped heal him. I sat down with Marcia Gay Harden who plays the mom of Nate and director Nick Hamm. “Gigi & Nate” will

One of the things that contributes to grief being so difficult to overcome is the learning that comes with it. Clinical psychologist Mary-Frances O'Connor shared with NPR that "grieving is a form of learning - one that teaches us how to be in the world without someone we love in it." It is that heartbreaking and life-altering feeling that drove Mishel Prada to take time off shortly after her mother died last year. After weeks of feeling lost, the actress decided to give herself the time she needed to mourn this major loss and figure out who she is. It brought her healing and helped her channel roles with so much more understanding, delicacy, and depth that you almost immediately notice a change. Prada isn't the same woman she was before. She also isn't the same actress. There's a fire in her that was always there...

Hulu will become the new post-theatrical pay one window for Roadside Attractions over the next couple of years. Under the terms of the deal, Hulu gets the exclusive U.S. streaming rights to upcoming Roadside Attractions films like “Call Jane” and “Gigi & Nate.”
Hulu, currently owned two-thirds by Disney and one-third by Comcast, has been a great friend to arthouse cinema and independent film. The streaming platform’s pre-existing output deals with Neon, IFC, and Magnolia, as well as its in-house relationship with Searchlight, keeps the distributors in business. The only other major entity with similar deals is Showtime, which carries A24 and Bleecker Street.
Find out much more about the “in flux” economics of such streaming indie-film distribution deals here from IndieWire’s Eric Kohn. Disney, by the way, is contractually obligated to buy out Comcast’s stake in Hulu in January 2024; the minimum valuation for the profitable streaming service (still a rarity!
