People are really missing the point of the Episode
benavraham19984 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The whole point of the storylines is to show that this show will never be meta. We will not get a Game of Thrones Climax with Evil morty, nor a stra wars-esque fight between tammy and summer, this show will always be about Rick and Morty having Stupid adventures, with some Storylines sprinkled on top, this show is not canon, and this episode was a clear middle finger to whoever think it should be, this was one of my favorite episodes.

By the way, for the people who are giving this episode a 1 just because they didn't understand the part with the storylines- Are you kidding me?

The most meta it can get
vicmashkov4 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Hilarious critique of Dan Harmons' own Story Circle structure, usage of tropes and being overly attached to fiction, and the biggest yet "in your face" idea - modern entertainments' only purpose is to advertise the merchandise. First - money, creativity second. It's like writers room cry from the heart, but, well, not overly dramatic. Also, expectation subversion at its finest. It's like they are fully aware of this shows' cult status and its' fans theories and attachment to this show, yet writers don't have much desire to get into this mold of sticking with the formula, giving character mandatory growth and drama. They made a statement in a very first episode - they want to do "a little bit of this and a little bit of that", not sticking to the formula, not giving everyone something, that is a staple in sitcoms - give some drama, make characters overcome it and learn a valuable lesson. And they are committed to it, not that they don't care about the fanbase, but they are trying to keep their creative integrity as much as possible, and I think it's really hard in modern era television. But still, if there will be more classic story structure in the future, I have no doubt, they will pull that off even without repeating anything we've seen in the story machine moment. Still, like I'm very sure Dan Harmon is very aware himself, I can see why people might have problems with that episode. It is too conceptual to be immersive, especially if you are unfamiliar with that type of humor.

This Episode Proves They Know What They're Doing
knlorenzen5 May 2020
Five months wait for episode 6 of season 4 was worth it, because I was laughing one second and then startled, jaw dropped the other second. This episode takes on a couple of things at once, but it works. It's a crazy episode (probably the most crazy in the entire series so far) and it gets the job done speaking directly to the fans. There's plenty of action and jokes for the audience to appreciate. Animation team did an amazing job as well. Great episode, 10/10

A perfect analogy of the show
swaneliott6 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode will have many different theories (ironic) about what it means, but for me personally, it's a metaphor for the show as a whole. Let me explain why.

So first off, The anthology format is the way animated adult shows are supposed to be, 'the expected model.' But rick and morty 'hijacked it from the beginning' and have broken the format. They disrupt continuity, break themes, and it catches the attention of Story Lord (aka the theorist fan base). Story Lord then drains rick and morty of all their stories, which is the writers of the show being drained of all their creative ideas by the fans wanting everything immediately, Until they run out of everything except the Bible and jesus, as most creatively dwindled shows will do stuff out of character. Only for it to be revealed that story is simply being watched by the real rick and morty (aka Adult swim and the producers), as their aim is to make money (which is why rick has a rant praising capitalism). And when the show will eventually derail and no longer work, instead of them fixing it, they will simply 'buy another one'

Thank you for listening to my Ted talk.

Pretty Good

It has a strange feeling to it that I love! The best part about this episode is that it's a middle finger to the worst part about Rick and Morty: it's toxic fanbase.

This. Is. Rick and Morty
jocpemice4 May 2020
This R&M at its most meta. The story possibilities are endless, the plot flows and twists and makes the viewer question everything in the show. If you're not down for ingeniosity and change, this episode, and this show, are not for you. This is great, well-written and entertaining. Can't wait for the rest.

This was more complex than Westworld finale. It really feels like they learned how to break the 5th wall, or even the 6th. Rick and Morty going off the rails on a crazy train, sir!

I think a rewatch might come in handy.
havoke-741214 May 2020
Constantly throughout I was engaged while also beging for answers. This is Rick and Morty in Its most complex, and I mean that in a good way. This episode pulls you into focus, while trusting you will use full maximum creativity to piece together the story. It's the Ambiguity of the episode that will mess with you, while insinuating striking questions. Really by the end you get most of it, or maybe you don't.

Very funny and creative, something still feels missing
carsonjuell4 May 2020
It could be the new writers but something has just felt off ever since season 3. Dan Harmon has a tendency to slowly ruin the shows that he has created (community), and I think he's doing it now with Rick and Morty. It's a funny episode and creative but it doesn't hold a candle to anything in Season 1 or 2.

Interesting

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was weird and crazy, so I don't know for I feel. It was funny and the characters were just as weird and crazy as any other characters. What got me most curious and excited in the episode was near the end. When both Rick and Morty got hit by the machine and showing us thing that could be cannon. We saw Rick and Summer fight Phoenix person and Tami. We also saw Evil Morty with an army to fight Rick and Morty. So I wonder if we'll see that later this season or another. Or if it'll even play the same way out.

Disappointing
asgrrr10 May 2020
I'm a big fan of the show. But this episode moves into territory everyone should stay out of - author onanism. Authors inserting themselves or their work into the narrative. If you want to talk about how you create, do a "making of". Don't write a show with constant nods to yourself. It's pretty uninteresting stuff for viewers who have come to watch original and thought provoking sci-fi. R&M have occasionally strayed into the subject of screenwriting before, but rarely, and never without having a solid storyline besides. This time they go overboard and there is no storyline besides this self-indulgence.

So, worst episode ever, and hopefully R&M return to form next week.

The meaning of life is to buy stuff, and you should buy into this episode. Which I think gave us a sneak peak of what's to come. This was so damn funny

Mix feelings
gil-bayer12 May 2020
I watched thIs episode 3 times. The second time in order to comprehend everything I have missed or didn't fully understand and the third time, after a few days, in order to reevaluate my thoughts about it. I completely understood the storyline and the massage/s. I'm not saying I didn't like it. As a massage/idea, it was brilliantly served. I'm just saying that I'm disappointed that the writers chose to deal with that instead of serving the fans a good old cool and thrilling adventure like they used to. I sincerely hope that there will be a few lovely adventures in the next episodes before the writers come back with one of those stories again... We have waited to long and we deserve it. Long live Rick and Morty😁

A Classic R&M Hot Mess
bigtendog10 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
With 3+ seasons down and ostensibly 6+ seasons remaining, this show faces a tremendous challenge to not lose its luster. With so many episodes, the setting-conflict-resolution formula involving the same core characters can easily get stale. One of Harmon/Roiland's preferred devices for stemming that tide is to obfuscate what's actually happening to our main characters, to blur the lines of real and unreal. For example, some of the most memorable episodes of the series so far have involved other versions of Rick and Morty from alternate dimensions, Rick being trapped in a simulation inside a simulation inside a simulation, Rick escaping prison by swapping his consciousness into other bodies, flashback scenes depicting memories of events that never happened, etc. Episode 4.06 takes another brilliant dip from that well, sending us on an amusing and occasionally disorienting zig-zag between real time and storytelling mode, and eventually leaving us with the implication that exactly nothing we just watched has truly happened to our real Rick and Morty. Yes, the episode is a self-aware parody of the show's storytelling formula, and in a certain sense also a parody of how emotionally invested people can get into things that don't matter, but it's another example of the clever tricks Harmon and Roiland have up their sleeves to continue to keep viewers on their toes.

Too meta
nikparag4 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was so meta that it started being annoying. Sure, meta jokes are funny but I don't think they can guide the plot of the whole episode. And when I see it like an anthology episode, the stories are very short and they get in each other's way with this heavy meta element. Also, to all the reviews that say: " I didn't understand anything and that's why I loved it", Wtf?

Screw your head on straight and watch this again.
will-schwartz4 May 2020
It might not be for everyone, but I was in love with this episode. I sincerely think this is in my top ten for the series at least. I keep seeing reviews saying the episode is too confusing, but tell me where you lost it or what exactly didn't make sense! The deconstruction of the story structure and the non-stop action fueled comedy is miles better than episodes three and four this season. Don't you dare compare this to Claw and Hoarder and the talking cat.

Amazing writing, however appealing too much to a specific fanbase
tristantlee8 October 2021
Looking back in retrospect this episode has a ton great parts going for it. The point of the episode is the Rick and Morty are stuck on a metaphorical train that figuratively explains the writing style of Dan and Justin throughout the entire episode. The train represents the stages that Dan takes to write and episode of Rick and Morty explores many different aspects such as "do's and don'ts", canon and non-canon timelines, fan appeal and a ton more. And they do a creative job of putting the episode together, almost as they would go about actually writing an episode (hence the layers of meta in this episode.) When you start to look back at how the episode is put together, you start to get a better understanding of what Dan and Justin were doing with this episode and the type of meta thinking. However the big problem with this is now this episode can almost only be enjoyed by those who are dedicated fans and understand Dan and Justin's style of writing. A person who occasional watches this show would see this episode and most likely have a very hard time understanding what is happening the episode and find it even harder to find any of the humor sprinkled in throughout the episode appealing. When an episode starts to get too complexed like this, it starts to take away the accessibility from new or common fans who just want to watch the show. I personal love this episode but can only give it a 7 as it is an episode that requires you to understand the creators of this show to actually appreciate it.

Subpar
metzelmax12 May 2020
We are witnessing the FamilyGuy-ization of Rick and Morty right now. Ok admittedly this is a interdimnesional cabel (sort of) episode so it is supposed to be a clip show. But it is just not funny. And failing that there is just no saving the thing.

Also Episodes 1-5 haven't been that well structured or funny either. Rick and Morty used to be a really thoughtful show with deep underlying philosophical themes and a primordial existential dread to juxtapose everything with.

That is what I want from R&M and they just don't deliver anymore. Even the weakest episodes in season 1-3 had more to say then this. The "There is no point, come watch TV" moment is actually from another clip show episode, so its not like I am asking for stuff that hasn't been there before.

This episode, or rather the whole season, has been subpar for the standards they have set in the past.

A funny crazy adventure
vaiumlivro4 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In times when things are confusing, this episode brought some entertainment, as confusing as they could get. The episode, as strange as ir might seem, was One of the best and most important episodes of R&M of all time. The fact that they are the entire episode on a meta-simulation, can not hide the fact that they gave huge clues to the series as a hole. Think about that big army near the final momentos (and the characters that were in). The meta-humor is not simple to understand, but R&M is not and never was a no-brainer.

One of the best episodes ever of R&M, as random as it might seem
