The main draw on the surface of writer-director Marco Calvani’s lovely if overly dramatic feature debut is the jaw-dislocating physical beauty of its star. That might sound crass, but “High Tide” is a movie that dares you not to be obsessed with — and attracted to — its leading man. Actor Marco Pigossi, Calvani’s real-life partners, enters the first frame as if sculpted out of marble, or butter even, stripping down to nothing and rushing into the sea off a desolate nude beach along Provincetown, Massachusetts, in a spin of anguish.
The cold open is a bookend “High Tide” will return to at its climax. It’s also a chilly plunge into a baptismal, hoped-for catharsis for Lourenço (Pigossi), a Brazilian immigrant with an expiring tourist visa reeling from a sudden breakup and now stuck in the United States, hoping to stay there. Bereft and abandoned by his unseen American...

Paris-based sales house Charades has acquired international sales rights to “In a Violent Nature,” the debut feature film from writer and director Chris Nash that is set to premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Section on Jan. 22.
Produced by Shudder under the streaming service’s Shudder Original banner, the film follows a vengeful undead monster as he methodically slaughters a group of campers in the wilderness after they remove a pendant from his resting grounds. Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer are also producers on “In a Violent Nature,” which is set for release in 2024.
“‘In a Violent Nature’ reminded us of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Angst,’ but most of all, it’s the discovery of an incredibly talented director,” said Charades co-founders Pierre Mazars, Yohann Comte and Carole Baraton. “We are very grateful to be working with Shudder once again with whom we are building an incredible track record of genre films from ‘Revenge,...

The first time Frances Fisher’s character appears in The King Tide, she’s stooped, uncommunicative, crushed by life and perhaps by a stroke. When the main action picks up, 10 years later, she’s a glowing picture of New Agey vim and vigor, and the island where she lives has been transformed. Nobody fears illness anymore because all discomforts and injuries are relieved by the miraculous healing powers of a little girl. The small population is united and harmonious — until the little girl’s powers lapse.
In this story of strong atmospherics and well-etched types, an isolated community discovers an otherworldly source of harmony, and the North Atlantic setting is as much a character as any of the villagers. Shooting in the tiny Newfoundland town of Keels, director Christian Sparkes (Hammer) plunges straight into a mood of crisis and foreboding with scenes of a pregnant woman’s bloody miscarriage and a disruptive storm.

The Killing Of Two Lovers,10.55pm, Film4, Monday, June 19
This mature debut from Robert Machoian, who has made short films for years, offers an intimate character study that grips as it goes. David (Clayne Crawford) is a man on the verge as he and his wife Nikki (Sepideh Moaffi) "take a break" from their relationship. Pressures - which are reflected in the groans and creaks from Peter Albrechtsen's ominous and unsettling sound design - that are magnified by the small town where they live and Derek (Chris Coy), who is vying for Nikki's affections. Crawford told us: "What the joy was, is, I saw the opportunities to play so many different sides of a human being, which you rarely get in a film." Machoian holds the mood carefully, inflecting with dark comedy while never losing the sense of danger associated with David's potential breakdown.

Director Robert Machoian follows up his well-received drama The Killing of Two Lovers with another low-budget but intriguing and original drama. In The Integrity of Joseph Chambers a man goes off hunting in the woods alone to seemingly prove something to his family, and himself, that he can ‘survive’ in the woods and be the ‘man’ of the house. It will come as no surprise that his irresponsibility leads him to a terrible situation.
First off, the movie looks fantastic. The cinematography is up there with the very best. I loved every shot of the woodland and the man walking around the woodland. I’m sure there’ll be some people who watch certain scenes and think that ‘nothing happens’. It’s just a guy walking through the woods,...

A city slicker moves his family to Alabama in search of a wholesome life and sets off for a solo hunting trip. It’s not going to go well
Robert Machoian is an indie film-maker drawn to a certain type of troubled American masculinity: the type that’s never so toxic as when weak or insecure. His previous drama The Killing of Two Lovers was about male anger, and this tense, suspenseful new film has similar ideas: a Dostoevskian parable set over a single day in remote woodland, with a slow-moving simplicity that belies its storytelling ingenuity and force, and again featuring Machoian’s longtime collaborator, actor-producer Clayne Crawford. This actually looks as if it could have been conceived in the 1970s, with a hint of Boorman’s Deliverance: right down to the Burt Reynolds moustache that the male lead smugly sculpts for himself one morning in front of the shaving mirror,...

Robert Machoian’s The Integrity of Joseph Chambers is a meticulous, farcical character study of the titular anti-hero (repeat collaborator Clayne Crawford), who tries to live up to traditional masculine ideals by going on a solo hunting trip. Needless to say, Chambers is hilariously inept, so the trip—and his integrity—go south. Writer/Director Machoian’s rigorous aesthetic—a mix of precise, occasionally surreal sound design and long, naturalistic takes—immerses us in Joseph’s headspace. With Oscar Ignacio Jiménez’s camera as curious witness, we’re able to follow the character’s thought processes in excruciating detail: almost like Aliens observing man for the very first time.

Our year-end coverage continues with a look at the best performances of 2021. Rather than divide categories into supporting or lead or by gender, we’ve written about our 35 favorites, period. Check our countdown below and start watching the ones you’ve missed here.
35. Katia Pascariu (Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn)
Katia Pascariu’s Emi, a teacher with a circulating home sex tape, is full of defiance. She walks around her Romanian homeland without pause, exasperated and disobedient. In the face of conflict she argues for her personal decisions, showing the sheer absurdity of the situation. Pascariu is the driving force behind Bad Luck Banging or Loony Poon, a comedy that leans on the effectiveness of her masked facial expressions and dialogue simmering with frustration. She’s the film’s only memorable face, synonymous with the farcical but realistic nature of her story, bringing to life a mishmash of ideas from writer-director Radu Jude.

We’ve been fans of this section since its launch back in 2010 when it used to identified with the ticker symbol of <=>, and now a dozen years later we’re curious to see what the next James White, The Killing of Two Lovers, Madeline’s Madeline and A Ghost Story. Among the lucky seven we find Ricky D’Ambrose bringing his Venice preemed The Cathedral, Sierra Pettengill’s latest docu offering and Justin Benson/Aaron Moorhead break into Park City with their latest Something In The Dirt.

Since short film Charlie and the Rabbit (2010), Robert Machoian (and frequent creative partner Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck) has been a mainstay with the annual pilgrimage in Park City. Breaking out big with his solo effort just two years back (the Neon released The Killing of Two Lovers), there’ll be a lot of hype surrounding this next project. Production on The Integrity of Joseph Chambers took place in December of 2020 in Alabama, and sees Machoian reteam with Clayne Crawford. He also landed the likes of Jordana Brewster, Michael Raymond-James and Jeffrey Dean Morgan to fill up a film that might make animals lovers cringe, but will likely devastate on some whole other level.…...

FX’s upcoming limited series “Class of ’09” has added Sepideh Moafi, Brian J. Smith, Jon Jon Briones, Brooke Smith, Jake McDorman, Rosalind Eleazar and Raúl Castillo to the cast. Additionally, Sunu Gonera is set to direct the first two episodes.
The eight-episode series is a suspense thriller that spans three decades and is told across three distinct but interweaving timelines in order to examine the nature of justice, humanity and the choices people make that define their lives and legacy. One of these timelines will be the near future when the U.S. criminal justice system has been transformed by artificial intelligence.
The show follows a class of FBI agents, including previously announced stars Kate Mara as Poet, a woman who never thought she’d join the world of law enforcement and yet is at the center of a pivotal moment of transformation, and Brian Tyree Henry as Tayo,...

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Only the Lonely: Cuartas Finds No Forgiveness of Blood in Striking Debut
With a film which could have easily borrowed the title of the similarly dysfunctional Utah-set The Killing of Two Lovers (2020), Colombian-American director Jonathan Cuartas makes a bid for a contemporary pillar of indie cinema with a family saga cum vampire narrative My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To. Bloodlust and loyalty are the twin diseases tearing a trio of siblings apart in this lowkey tale of Midwestern woe which juxtaposes the passionate zest of its poetic title and characters literally drained of meaning and sustenance.…...

As the film industry attempts to regain its footing from a tumultuous year, it seems many of our most-anticipated (some long-delayed) titles will be arriving in the back half of 2021. But the midway point still has plenty to recommend. As we do each year, we’ve rounded up our favorite films thus far.
While year’s end will bring personal favorites from all our writers, think of the below entries (and honorable mentions) as a comprehensive rundown of what should be seen before heading forward. As a note: this feature is based solely on U.S. theatrical and digital releases from 2021, with the majority widely available, where listed.
We should also note a number of films that premiered on the festival circuit last year also had a qualifying award, therefore making them 2020 films by our standards—including I Carry You With Me, Minari, The Truffle Hunters, and The Father. Check out our picks below,...

Paramount’s thriller sequel opened on Thursday 3.
Thriller sequel A Quiet Place Part II will look to replicate its success in international markets when it opens in 563 UK cinemas this weekend.
The film took $48.4m (£34.3m) across its opening three-day weekend in North America. This represented the best debut in the territory since the pandemic began; and, given social distancing measures, compares well with the $50.2m three-day opening of the first film in April 2018, which went on to gross $188m (£133.1m) across the US and Canada.

Clayne Crawford: 'What the joy was, is, I saw the opportunities to play so many different sides of a human being, which you rarely get in a film'
Although The Killing Of Two Lovers is Robert Machoian’s film debut, there’s a maturity about this intimate character study of a family man who finds himself on the edge, not just in terms of its tight storytelling – mirrored by the use for most of the running time by the 4:3 ratio – but also the craft. David (Clayne Crawford) is struggling to cope with the relationship break he and his wife Nikki (Sepideh Moaffi) are taking, not just because it means he spends less time with his kids but because they live in a fishbowl of a town where emotions are magnified, a tension that grows through the film, with David’s bottled up emotions threaten to blow as he...

The book centers on Flynne (Moretz) and her brother Burton (Reynor). In the novel, Burton, a veteran of the Marine Corps’ elite Haptic Recon force, is hired for a security job that takes place in what he thinks is cyberspace. Warner Bros.’ chiller “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” topped the box office with £2,708,455 in its opening week as the U.K. basked in late May sunshine and a long bank holiday weekend.
The good weather that traditionally keeps audiences outdoors did not appear to have a detrimental effect on the box office, with Sony’s family-friendly “Peter Rabbit 2” scoring £2,045,999 in its second week in second place, according to numbers released by Comscore.
However, if going purely by weekend numbers, “Peter Rabbit 2” collected £2 million, a shade over the £1.9 million taken by “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.”
“Peter Rabbit 2” has now collected more than £7,484,061 in the U.K. Upcoming key market releases for the film include China (June 11), Japan (June 25), France (June 30), Germany (July 1), Italy (July 1), Spain (July 16) and Brazil (August 26).
Disney’s “Cruella” opened simultaneously on streamer Disney Plus and in cinemas and collected £1,453,635 in third place.

The global perspective of Australian filmmakers will be on show at next month’s Revelation Perth International Film Festival, which carries the theme of ‘Distant but Connected’.
Highlights include the world premiere of Antonio Traverso’s documentary The Best Battle, in which the Curtin University lecturer explores the political street art of Chile’s capital during the 2019/2020 estallido social (social blast) that marked the remembrance of 1973.
The documentary program will also feature the Australian premiere of Garth De Bruno Austin’s The Last Horns of Africa, an Australian/South African co-production that follows the efforts to protect rhinos in South Africa’s Kruger Park.
Kiwi director Gaysorn Thavat’s The Justice of Bunny King, starring Essie Davis, will have its Australian premiere at the festival. Shot in Auckland, Davis stars opposite Thomasin McKenzie, playing a mother-of-two with a sketchy past and the world against her.

Nearly 16 months after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Robert Machoian’s The Killing of Two Lovers, picked up by Neon, has arrived. Machoian, who grew up in King City and told me he used to frequent the punk scene in San Luis Obispo, has spent most of his days somewhere in California, in small towns with citizens that all know each other’s relationship statuses. With a population hovering around 700, Kanosh, Utah became the site for this project, his first solo film in years, working without his frequent collaborator and friend Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck.

Though the country might be inching towards normalcy, the specialty box office has yet to make steps towards a total recovery. This weekend we failed to see a single film break a 100K gross.
Opening at 41 screens this week was IFC Midnight horror flick The Djinn. Co-directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell, the film follows a mute twelve-year-old, Dylan Jacobs, as he discovers a mysterious book of spells inside his new apartment. Grieving the loss of his mother, and feeling isolated from everyone except for his father, Dylan performs a ritual that promises to deliver his heart’s desire: to have a voice.
Garnering an 88% on Rt, Djinn’s premiere saw a promising $1004 per screen average and brought home over 40 grand. Few films have been able to break this mark in the limited-release space during the pandemic.
Neon debuted marriage drama The Killing of Two Lovers this week.

Five new films, including “Spiral” (Lionsgate) from the lucrative “Saw” franchise, opened wide (at least 600 theaters) stateside. That is by far the biggest studio commitment to any week in a long time, with three at one time usually the most, and four rare.
Mid-May is normally prime for movie releases. This year, it’s Memorial Day when more prime titles will open. Optimism remains for then, but for now it’s treading water time. The expected much bigger “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount) along with “Cruella” (Disney) on May 28 will be a much better test of how close theaters are to providing grosses commensurate with their potential.
But a Top 10 of $24 million, with an overall take of perhaps $26 million, remains anemic considering the increased number of fresh films, combined with more theaters plus a general greater sense of safety in theaters. That sense is led above all by how “Spiral” did.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Robert Machoian’s debut feature, The Killing of Two Lovers, has a tough psychological knot braided right through its center, one that it doesn’t quite satisfyingly untangle — not that it exactly means to. The movie opens with a man named David (Clayne Crawford) standing over his sleeping wife, Nikki (Sepideh Moafi), and the man she’s been seeing, Derek (Chris Coy), with a gun in hand, shaking indecisively as he points it at one, then the other. No, this isn’t the killing referenced by the title, or at...

Despite the grim promise of its title, Robert Machoian’s The Killing of Two Lovers is more emotionally brutal than it is violent. Set in a Utah town so small that everyone knows everyone, the film follows David (Clayne Crawford), a depressed everyman who has recently separated from his wife and the mother of his children, Nikki (Sepideh Moafi). Well-intentioned though it may be, their agreement to spend time apart and potentially date other people sends David into a downward spiral, and once he’s made aware of his wife’s new male friend, Derek (Chris Coy), things grow more complicated and conclude […]

Greenland (Ric Roman Waugh)
At first glance, Ric Roman Waugh’s Greenland appears to be a spiritual sequel to Geostorm. Also starring Gerard Butler, that 2017 film is a silly, diverting disaster-action epic. Greenland is decidedly more nuanced, cerebral, and, frankly, memorable. Butler plays John Garrity, a structural engineer determined to mend his fractured marriage. As he tries to make good with his wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) ahead of a neighborhood barbecue, reports of incoming debris from a nearby comet get more serious. John, unexpectedly, gets a “Presidential Alert” on his phone, informing him, his wife, and their son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) have been selected for government-sponsored shelter. It...

‘The Killing of Two Lovers’ Reinvents the Dysfunctional Family Drama by Making It Thrilling to Watch
It only takes a matter of seconds for “The Killing of Two Lovers” to justify its title. David (Clayne Crawford), bearded and disheveled, hovers in a bedroom with a pistol in his hands as his wife Nikki (Sepideh Moafi) sleeps alongside her new boyfriend Derek (Chris Coy). It’s a riveting start to writer-director Robert Machoian’s , which reinvents the clichés of the dysfunctional family drama by making them thrilling to watch.
Needless to say, David’s not quite ready to pull the trigger, and the camera chases him out the door as he catches his breath. Caught between caring for his ailing father (Bruce Graham) and begging Nikki to let him back into her life, he’s either hit rock bottom or floating just above it. The movie huddles alongside him as he attempts to fix a broken household well beyond repair.
