Chicago – By the age of 15, actress Hanna Hall had delivered iconic lines in two of the most acclaimed films of the ’90s. After famously yelling, “Run, Forrest, run!” in Robert Zemeckis’s Oscar-winner, “Forrest Gump,” Hall nailed the unforgettable line, “Obviously, doctor, you’ve never been a 13-year-old girl,” in Sofia Coppola’s directorial debut, “The Virgin Suicides.”
Since then, Hall has tackled a wide variety of audacious roles in both mainstream releases, such as Rob Zombie’s 2007 “Halloween” remake, and independent productions including Adam Sherman’s edgy 2010 drama, “Happiness Runs.” In her latest film, “Scalene,” Hall plays Paige, a compassionate college student who signs up to care for a mentally handicapped man, Jakob (Adam Scarimbolo). When she suspects that Jakob is being abused by his mother, Janice (Margo Martindale), Paige attempts to “save” him by devising a plan that could potentially result in her own doom. A dark, realistic character study that isn't for the easily offended.
Director: Adam Sherman
Writers: Adam Sherman, Dave Reeves, Rachel Hardisty
Stars: Lukas Haas, Madeline Zima and Jake Busey
Of all the films screening at SXSW this year 'Crazy Eyes' was one of the first to get cut from my schedule. At first glance it was easy to assume I'd seen too many of these types of films before. You know the type: guy can get any girl he wants but wants the one he can't have. Still, at the last minute I decided to take a risk and catch the premiere screening. As soon as the credits rolled I knew I had found my festival favorite.
Synopsis: Zach, a wealthy, alcoholic divorcee and father, is torn between his past love and present infatuation. His obsession for Rebecca, who he affectionately calls Crazy Eyes, seems to be driving...

Geek Girl Navigating the World – “The Music Goes Round My Head”*
Music has always been a big part of my life. When I was a starry-eyed little sprocket, we didn’t watch much TV, but we had a record player. My mom had albums by John Denver and Cat Stevens and The Eagles, and my Dad had Bachman Turner Overdrive tapes. There was even a Bay City Rollers tape in there somewhere. We listened to music while we worked around the house, and it seemed like the radio had a lot more entertainment to offer than local TV stations ever did.
In addition to that, my family tends to be very musical. Most of them play guitars, and when we get together, usually we sing together. I was almost sixteen years old before I realized that not every family does that. I’m not sure why I assumed that everyone...

Director: Adam Sherman Writer: Adam Sherman Starring: Mark L. Young, Hanna Hall, Jesse Plemons, Laura Peters, Shiloh Fernandez Presumably sometime in the late 1960s, Victor’s (Mark L. Young) parents (Andie MacDowell and Mark Boone Junior) discovered what they thought was utopia – a far out rural hippie commune founded on the precepts of free love, drug experimentation and freshly grown vegetables. Twenty years later, finding themselves trapped like rats in this no longer utopian cage, the offspring of the free love generation have evolved into bitter and jaded punk rockers. For this next generation, freedom has become unbearably oppressive. Brimming with animosity for their spaced-out and disillusioned parents, these kids will do whatever they can to not follow in their parents’ footsteps; they just can’t shake the promiscuity, but they do turn to harder drugs and darker music. Their chosen soundtrack – The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Fear, Bad Brains, UK Subs,...

Yes, we're excited to see "Iron Man 2," "Inception" and God help us, "Predators." But what we're really looking forward to spending a few hours in the company of an undertaking Bill Murray ("Get Low"), an Italian-speaking Tilda Swinton ("I Am Love") and a toga-wearing Rachel Weisz ("Agora") in the comfort of air-conditioned theater over the next three months. (Either that or we'll be enjoying them from the comfort of home online, on demand or on DVD.)

Thanks to a huge Mother's Day bump, documentary Babies opened to $2.16 million, which represented the highest-grossing limited opening in over a year and a half. Holdovers City Island, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Secret in Their Eyes continued their decent limited runs, but new release Mother and Child was so-so and Casino Jack and the United States of Money failed to extort much cash from audiences in its debut. Distributor Focus Features' marketing positioned Babies as a Mother's Day event, and the picture did not disappoint on this front: while Babies fell outside of the Top Ten in its first two days, it experienced a 57 percent increase on Sunday to $1.09 million, which pushed it up to eighth place on the weekend chart. While Babies seems relatively high profile, it only opened at 534 locations, putting it just under the 600 theater threshold separating limited and nationwide releases. Babies's...

Sex, drugs and beautiful youth are the enticing elements throughout writer/director Adam Sherman's autobiographical drama "Happiness Runs" and yet the coming-of-age drama fails to excite. Based on Sherman's childhood growing up in a polygamous commune in Vermont, the novice filmmaker reveals personal bravery for mining his own experiences with free love and experimental drug use but fails to take advantage of their dramatic potential. Sherman, directing his second feature after the little-seen 2004 horror comedy "Dead Doll", may be too close to the "Lord of the Flies"-like tale of children rebelling against their hippie parents. Besides a soundtrack of alternative classics featuring Joy Division and The Buzzcocks and some artful sequences including one with lead actress Hanna Hall and an abandoned Ferris wheel there's little to recommend.

Friday, May 7, 2010 should be called Jesse Plemons Day. It's the day his new film "Happiness Runs" hits theaters and the day Season 4 of "Friday Night Lights" premieres on NBC. His character, fan favorite Landry Clarke, will be featured more than ever, now that other characters have grown up and moved out of Dillon, Texas. Plemons, who has been acting since he played a cowboy in a Coke commercial at age 3, may surprise his "Friday Night Lights" fans when he plays a cruel drug dealer in "Happiness." But for Plemons, it's all about new learning experiences. Back Stage: You started acting at a young age. When did you know you wanted to be a professional actor?Jesse Plemons: I guess when you're a child actor you don't really think, "I'm going to do this for the rest of my life." But I had a lot of fun meeting new people,...

Monthly Movie Preview – May 2010
It’s summer. Hang on, don’t go outside to verify the weather. Just trust me. It’s summer. I should know, I’m a film critic. Sure, if you’re in Chicago you’ll have another couple of days with highs in the 40s. And if you live in Portland, there will be some cloudy days ahead of us, before the secretly perfect summer. If you head to the theater though, its summer blockbuster season thanks to Robert Downey Jr.’s fancy metal suit, Russell Crowe’s bow and arrow, Sarah Jessica Parker’s 58 dresses, Jake Gyllenhaal’s abs and Mike Myers’ ogre. Let’s get started, or as I now like to say thanks to the underwhelming remake of Clash of the Titans … release the kraken!
