Exclusive: STXfilms has set F. Gary Gray to direct Vin Diesel to re-team in the action-comedy Muscle, which will be Gray’s next film and will shoot later this year. Reginald Hudlin and Byron Phillips are producing alongside Diesel and Samantha Vincent for One Race Films. Gray will be executive producer.
Diesel and Gray developed a rapport making 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, a film that grossed over $1.2 billion in global box office. The latest draft of Muscle is by John Swetnam and Malcolm Spellman. The original script was written by Scott Taylor & Wesley Jermaine Johnson. The film’s log line is being kept under wraps.
“There are few directors who can match Gary’s skill with character, comedy, and big action, which is why he is one of the most accomplished and in-demand directors working today, said Adam Fogelson, chairman, STXfilms Motion Picture Group. “Over the years, Vin...

Paul Greengrass may no longer be a journalist, but he has successfully brought a journalistic style to both action films and historical dramas over his career. The filmmaker is best known for his hand-held, cinéma vérité style where the camera moves like a cameraman embedded in the scene, struggling to capture real events. His style is often imitated, though few are able to match the subtly precise way that Greengrass constructs his sequences through quick cutting and frenetic camerawork. Despite being famous for a specific filmmaking technique, Greengrass’ filmography is still quite diverse, which should be apparent in the gallery below.

He began his career working for the audacious British current affairs program “World in Action.” He transitioned to fiction filmmaking with a series of TV movies based on historical events. His breakout hit was the historical drama “Bloody Sunday,” chronicling the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings.

Co-founded in the 1950s by Samuel Z. Arkoff, American International Pictures used a simple acronym, the Arkoff formula, to help guarantee the success of the independent production company’s films: Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy, and Fornication.
While, as Vanity Fair put it, the youth-oriented company during its 26-year run was known for churning out “disposable B movies you could make out to,” some of those same kitschy, low-budget, teen-focused films went on to change the course of American cinema: launching the careers of Roger Corman and protege Martin Scorsese, birthing franchises like “The Fast and the Furious” and “Max Max” and inspiring the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
Now, 40 years after releasing its last movie, Aip is back: MGM announced Wednesday that it is reviving the label. Its first acquisition is Tate Taylor’s “Breaking News in Yuba County,” which will be released by MGM’s United...

Greg Rucka has been enchanting comics readers with his sprawling stories for years. Although he might be best known as the writer behind acclaimed runs on major superheroes like Wonder Woman, he’s also got a stack of critically acclaimed creator-owned comics under his belt too. One of those series, The Old Guard, is making its way to the small screen in a new Netflix movie starring Charlize Theron. The Gina Prince-Bythewood directed flick centers around Theron’s immortal warrior, Andy, and her team of undying soldiers who’ve been protecting humanity for millennia.
There’s no question that Andy is the tragic hero of The Old Guard. So where did the idea of the deathless warrior come from? Well, as Rucka explains, it wasn’t an easy road.
“That is one of those deceptively hard questions to answer,” he says. “Because, for me, a lot of ideas tend to...

This week, Bungie will reveal “the next step in the Destiny 2 universe.” Longtime fans of the hit Action Mmo know this likely means that the developer is set to unveil the big Year 4 update coming to the game in the fall. In this case, we’ll also probably hear more about the upcoming Season 11 content, which is rumored to be called “Season of Arrivals,” likely referring to the arrival of The Darkness on mysterious Pyramid ships, an event teased during Season of the Worthy.
The reveal event comes just days after Bungie hosted its first big live event in the game. Players flocked to the Tower to watch the Almighty, a powerful Red Legion ship, get blown to bits by Rasputin right before it could fire on the Last City. The event seemed to finally bring the Red Legion saga, which began in the vanilla version of Destiny 2 in 2017, to a close.

It is said that Sir Isaac Newton used his time at home during the 1655 pandemic to discover gravity and invent calculus. Fellow scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson took a different path today with his Covid-19 downtown – he examined the improbabilities of Marvel and DC superheroes.
Today’s tweetstorm from deGrasse covered Superman, Thor, and the Hulk, among others. They’re no strangers to the TV host and astrophysicist. In fact, Superman once visited him in his role as the head of the Hayden Planetarium.

I first met Adam 14 years ago outside the Juice Bar in Nantucket. I quickly introduced myself because my awkward gawking would’ve made any ordinary person uncomfortable. I’d been a fan for years.
Like most songwriters, I was completely in awe of his power pop songbook. From “That Thing You Do” and “Stacy’s Mom” to Tinted Windows’ “Kind of a Girl” and Click Five’s “Just The Girl” — it was all brilliantly crafted. But on a slightly subversive note, I equally dug the fact that he scribed both The Crank Yankers and Howard Stern themes. Those are some Adam deep cuts, but classics nonetheless. You see, Adam straddled musical worlds like a champion. If he was a seesaw of song, one half was indie cool as f–k, while the other side was hilarious Borscht Belt brilliance — and yet underneath it all were these moments of melancholy that made it all mean something.

While Bong Joon Ho and the historic Parasite victories deservedly dominated Academy Awards-related headlines this past week, one of our favorite moments of the ceremony is when they put the spotlight on short film work. All 15 of the nominated films enjoyed a theatrical release and digital release in the past weeks, but now it’s easier than ever to watch the victors.
The trio of impressive winners in Animation (Matthew A. Cherry’s Hair Love), Documentary (Carol Dysinger’s Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)), and Live Action (Marshall Curry’s The Neighbors’ Window) are now available for free, offering a preview of the talented directors who we imagine will return to awards season with expanded projects in the years to come.
