Fantastic Episode - Humor and Heart - A Series Best
kgraovac27 October 2023
Having opposites cohabitate by necessity is a sitcom trope that goes back even before THE ODD COUPLE. With the right actors and a good script, this basic setup can result in great comedy. ALICE did a hilarious Season 1 episode unimaginatively called "The Odd Couple" and here, in Episode #3, this waitress comedy delivers its' own classic take on a sitcom staple with Vicki, the innocent virgin, temporarily moving in with acerbic party-girl Cassie.

Vicki's new apartment hasn't been vacated yet and none of the ladies can put her up. Since Cassie's the only one with a spare room, they pressure her into taking Vicki in as a guest. Cassie objects saying there are "fifteen guys on a waiting list" ahead of Vicki.

It is obvious that the characters and the chemistry have really jelled in the scene where they arrange accommodation for Vicki and Lois' role of den mother is once again very evident.

Cassie lays down the ground rules but Vicki can't help being her own sweet self and getting on Cassie's nerves. One of the best scenes occurs in the waitress lounge the second day when Vicki walks in and announces her apartment won't be ready for another week. Cassie's bug-eyed expression is priceless and no words needed to convey her displeasure at this news.

Eventually, Cassie's ranting inspires Vicki to assert herself and she gets a better apartment than the original one she rented. There is a lovely scene where Cassie admits she wants Vicki back and misses having her there. When saying this, Cassie's still her usual coarse self, but the sentiment is unmistakable. Ann Jillian's talent was so underrated.

This is a wonderful episode - one of the best of the whole series. The characters are growing, there are many laughs and also some nice tender scenes that are not too schmaltzy. THE GOLDEN GIRLS made these kinds of shows about female socialization a weekly thing. But IT'S LIVING did it first.

The print that currently airs on TV and streaming services is missing about three minutes of footage:

In the middle of the episode, Mario (Bert Remsen) has one of his biggest scenes of the series as he prepares for an upcoming reunion with an old flame from WWII. It's largely a monologue and seems to come out of nowhere. The reason for that is because an earlier scene where Mario receives a postcard from his old flame Pauline has been cut.

It is also missing a short scene where Cassie arrives late for work and walks past Nancy and then Sonny makes a risqué remark about menage a trois.

The tag scene is also not in the current version. It has Mario leaving for his date and Cassie gives Sonny a dollar to keep him from joining the girls at a coffee shop. A still image from this tag is used for the closing credits image.
