Still Going Strong
MrsTheFrog2 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The more people who come here to write, "This show is too political!" or "Benson is so old!" reviews, the more I know this show is staying extremely relevant in a society gone to hell in a handbasket.

I'm so glad that they gave Fin/Ice-T an engaging story, as it's been a while. His scenes with the little boy were a great reminder that Fin has this buried tender side. I actually felt really bad for him having to shoot the father.

Kudos to NBC for using trans actors to play trans roles! I'm loving that! Would love to see more of Kat delving into that side of sex crimes; her relationship with that community is so pure and wonderful. Also, am I the only one who noticed they casually outed Kat's character as bi at the top of the episode? Haha Sweet.

Mariska was on fire this episode. For starters, anyone saying she is too old or too tired to still be acting in this role has some internalized misogyny to work out. I think Mariska stays in this role specifically so that strong, aging women are realistically represented. Nobody expects someone to look the same at 30 as they do at 50. Her "What do you need?" speech to the defense attorney gave me shivers. So much acting was done with expressions in this finale, and I was so there for it.

So ... yeah. Whine all you want, but *shrug* the show consistently turns in 7.0 and up episodes every year, even in the last 3-6 yrs while some folks have been coming here to complain about things like politics, Feminists and age. I don't think Dick Wolf is one bit worried. (Who, btw, has said many times that he will basically do the show as long as Mariska is on board.)

The Things We Have to Lose
bobcobb30126 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Addressing multiple topics and crimes in one episode works and should be the format SVU uses moving forward.

Disappointed we won't see the resolution until September at the earliest, but a cliffhanger can be a good thing in the TV world.

The Show depths
lukofth20 January 2023
The show keeps getting deeper and complex, focusing on multiple cases at once and detectives being the main focus having to grow, show their weaknesses, strengths evolving as a team. Now more than ever SVU is listening to whats happening in the spectator world and applying it to the show arcs making it feel more real or at least relatable to real life problems.

Olivia Benson has grown, she used to be unbreakable and always going by the book but after many conflicts, breaking her down and showing how she can be weak too and sometimes cant be everyone's support, after many seasons seeing her as the one who helps others, Is great to have her as a stronger detective who still can held her team but will be willing to admit she needs help too. Rollings is growing to be a great successor for Benson even If we never get to see that, Fin still as loyal as always but more steady than ever and having Carissi working away but close, shows how hard it can be for the district to handle the svu cases and shows off how outrageous the system can be.

Still good and strong show.

Fits Perfect As A Season Finale
jyanes8 June 2020
Although this was not originally set to be the season finale, it fit perfectly to bring season 21 to a full circle. The format of the episode was nothing seen before on SVU with returning cases, all together in one episode. Character development is definitely strong in this one with great loose ends to be tied up when season 22 returns. Great way to finish off a historic season.

this unexpected season finale has everything
whoneedsascreenname8 July 2023
This episode was never intended as SVU's Season 21 finale, but after the pandemic closed down production in the Spring of 2020, this episode (which aired end of April of that year) was the last stuff they had shot and had to suffice as the season-ender

In hindsight "The Things We have Lose" is a topnotch finale, better than other finales in which writers and producers contort the basics in order to do something 'big'

Here they were just doing a normal, great episode and it's fantastic

Every cast member has a storyline, all of which revolve around tying up loose ends around past high-profile case.

This episode also has Jenna Stern as Barth (love her; she's not used enough), Stephen Wallem, reliably terrific as Nurse Rudy, and Vince Curatola returning as Judge Bertuccio

SVU budgets have been chopped so deeply in the last coupla years, they seem to be relying less and less on 'known' supporting actors. The show is always better when they do. Wish they could find a way to have these folks on all the time.

Can't leave out amazing Bea Cordelia returning as Lakira. Not sure if it's pc to mention that she's a trans actor, but this storyline was so well done, and feels as though it was greatly enhanced by this authentic casting

Expertly written and directed with at least 5 or 6 major storylines all precisely woven together.

Definitely a stand-out episode of the 2.0 era.

Brilliant, pity about the director!
tira-a-w13 May 2020
Emotional and complex story telling at its best, however some of the impact reduced by jerky camera movement through much of the episode, not usually a factor with Law and Order SVU, as directors always top notch.

Chaos: The wind on the wings of a butterfly
yazguloner2 June 2021
The results behind the finished cases are processed. The price paid by the perpetrator and the victims after the lawsuits ended... Gangrene wounds, dead-end family relationships, big fish in the sea.

If you are not brave and trust, the wind turns into a storm on the wings of the butterfly.

Never Give Up.

When does karma visit
melanie-735223 September 2021
It would be so satisfying to see karma visit former Judge Barth in a really big, bad way. I wasn't holding my breath, but the writers came through with karma for another defense attorney, so there's always hope. That said, for a former judge to defend what she's defending is worthy of beast karma.

Meh...
Just-A-Girl-1410 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There was nothing interesting or special about this episode, especially for a season final. I liked that they went back to revisit old cases. Character development is a really good thing, I wish they'd do it more. Unfortunately they picked the wrong characters. I hated the Me Too story, with Sir Toby. It was so unoriginal and tiring that it made me want to cry. I didn't really buy the story of the black family. Finn did the right thing but in reality I don't think cops go around buying cellphones for people. He could have just given him his card. I'm also not sure why that guy even attacked his wife. It came out of no where and also where was the police? If the kid called Finn, why did he go there alone? As for the transgender woman Lachira, I have no idea why they brought her back. She is definitely responsible for her friend's death. She didn't do it because she was afraid no one would believe her, she did it for the money. She is another unsympathetic character, I feel like we've seen too many of them this season. I also feel like many of the victims were really disrespectful to the police. To cops who were trying to help them. Obviously people can be nasty but I would expect to see more gratitude from victims. Lachira for example was one of them. She practically told Kat to go to hell after all the work she did just to call her immediately when her friend was assaulted as if they were BFFs. Lasting, SVU needs more people! Carisi is doing great job as the new A.D.A but as I mentioned in a previous review, I find it hard to believe MANHATTAN SVU can function with only 3 detectives. It's almost ridiculous.

Meh

Warning: Spoilers
I have to agree with the other reviewer. Benson comes across as angry and miserable. Frankly she acts like she's got a stick up her ass all the time. There used to be some nuance to her character. Now there is none. I want to care about the characters on the show and I just don't anymore. I didn't feel anything for Ivy, Lachera or Jonelle. Or Carisi and Sir Toby's trial. There used to be interesting cases once upon a time. Either you care about the victims or the story drew you in. The last interesting case was probably Carl Rudnick and Greg Yates. I'm still amazed this show got renewed for three more seasons.

AT least IT was HONEST.
yurigar24 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Overall the episode was a foregone conclusion, but I will say that the scene with the African-AMERICAN mother and son was atypical of a mother trying to control her situation through the idea she could protect herself and her son.The one thing I loved was when FINN gave the boy a phone, speaks volumes to who is the conscientious one.....meaning the mother could not be trusted. And to add insult to injury WHEN ALL THE DRAMA is done FINN gets sued. Domestic violence does more mental harm than the physical and this episode and probably others that explained it better for example check out "Confession" Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 10, which shows the interaction between John MUNCH AND A VICTIM P.S THE only reason Law and Order svu continues is because it has become a P.S.A for a morally corrupt society that has become bankrupt.
