The patrol is coming into Salt River when the sheriff stops Rip, he is having trouble in town and needs help. He only has two deputies. Just as a mob led by the Stocker brothers is about to rush the deputies, Masters arrives. The crowd wants the prisoner, Joe Ring. Rip has Rusty and Rinty go inside and watch the prisoner. Rusty sends Rinnie outside to help Rip. Joe Ring promises to go to Fort Apache with Rusty, if Rusty lets him out of the jail.
Rusty does but Joe Ring escapes leaving Rusty guilty of aiding a possible murderer. Rusty decides to follow Ring but Rinnie has to get him his horse. The Stockers take off after Ring but Ring has taken a rifle and a six gun with him.
Rusty has tracked Ring to the badlands: mostly desert with no water. Rip and Boone are following behind. Rusty loses his horse when a snack attacks and bites Rinnie. Now they are both trapped and a dust storm blows in. Boone finds Rusty's horse but he and Rip have had to take shelter.
Rusty has found a cave to shelter in, and Ring has found him. Ring wants to leave the cave but Rusty refuses to leave without Rinnie. Without Rinnie, Rusty says they will just wander about until they die. Ring tells Rusty his life story and that helps explain why he is bitter. Ring also explains the boots and gold watch he had were given to him by a man with sandy colored hair and the man was missing a finger. Later he was told the boots and watch belonged to a Stocker. Martin and Luke accused Ring of killing their brother and taking his things.
Boone and Rip are just about on top of Rusty and Rinnie but Ring covers Rusty's mouth. Rinnie is left behind as Ring and Rusty set out looking for water. Rinty goes after Rusty but the Stockers see Rinty and follow him. Rinty finds Rusty but he sends him to get Rip. The Stockers have found Ring but they figure he died from the heat. As they ride close to kill Ring in case he's alive, Rusty notices one of the men has a missing finger. It's Luke Stocker. Luke is planning on shooting Ring and Rusty, but Rinty arrives. Turns out the Stockers had robbed a stage and Luke killed his brother because the others claimed he was cheating them out of a fair share of the money. Then he gave the boots and watch to Ring to frame him.
Ring is innocent. He figures he owes Rusty for believing in him, and is going to try to enlist in the army.
