Early on in Detective Story, there’s a scene where the title character bumps into his secretary on the street. He’s working undercover (which consists solely of an awful wig; he hasn't changed from his typically flamboyant outfit), but she recognizes him anyway. She’s on her lunch break, on her way back to her day job at a market research firm. “Why don’t you try getting one?” she asks him. “You can make a lot more money in this line.” “There are more important things in life than money,” he answers, shaking out his fake locks.
In this moment, we get the essence of Takashi Miike’s art: A scene familiar from so much genre cinema becomes a meeting place of the ludicrous and the surprisingly heartfelt. As funny as Kazuya Nakayama is in this scene (doing a broad-comic variation on the bumbling detective character), the mention...

For those of you who thought Japanese director and full-blown cult sensation Takashi Miike had resigned himself to helming family-friendly fodder for the rest of his days, think again. The kind souls at 24 Frames per Second have graciously posted the first trailer for Miike’s remake of Eiichi Kudo’s “Thirteen Assassins”, and while I can’t understand a single word of it, the tone suggests something a lot darker and more mature than the stuff we’ve encountered as of late, “Crows Zero” and “Detective Story” notwithstanding. It reminds me of the work he was doing in the early 90’s, particularly the bleaker, more restrained endeavors during his years in the yakuza genre. Sometimes its good to get back to basics. A plot synopsis should help shed some like on things: 3, an unlucky number for one. In the era of the Shogun, an evil young lord rapes and kills,...

Every year, San Francisco gets into a frisky, gory mood as the annual Another Hole in the Head film festival rears its ugly head. Presented by the San Francisco Independent Film Festival, this offshoot little fest contains some of the best in independent and foreign B-movies. Though billed as a celebration of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, in truth it’s a place for all types of cult films in the making, as indicated by this year’s diverse programming.
Now in its sixth year, the two-week long circus of strange mixes horror, comedy, drama, action, documentary and even porn in its schedule. The only requirement is to be trashy and exciting. Blood, please, if you can.
Cult icon Takashi Miike gets two films in, first with the opening night film Crows: Episode Zero, then with his special take on the private eye genre, Detective Story. At first, it’s...
