I apologise on behalf of Australians
Barebower29 May 2021
So I'm only 30 minutes into this film whilst writing the review... As an Australian I feel a duty to apologise to the world for this film.

In terms of a horror/gore/terror movie the concept is promising for a low budget movie. The production quality is reasonably good but Wolf Creek it ain't, SAW it ain't... The 'acting' is beyond appalling... It's barely at the level of a bad high school play.

Ultimately... very disappointing and tossing up whether to keep watching it or go and do some laundry...

Duplicate scenes, bad effects and poor acting.
rivalclepto20 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
My first, as far as I remember, review. I love a good kill 'em all movie. I even like some of the macabre cult classics, but this was fairly insulting to my movie senses.

Aside from scenes that were repeated, the acting was bad, the gore was was 'eh', but it was the scenes and reasonless killings with characters that had no real business being in the plot (Chris) and no continuous cohesive thought.

I knew the movie was rubbish when the deaf girl was looking at her shot leg and saying 'why did you shoot me in the leg I was going to represent in the Nationals' - that scene was so trying to go for your heart strings but failed.

This is a "I don't have anything better to do with my time" movie.

Waste of time Aussie indie
Leofwine_draca24 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
THE 7TH HUNT is an indie action/horror/thriller from Australia that's just as pitiful as most films that this genre throws up. It concerns a poorly-written bunch of characters who are kidnapped and taken to a remote location, only to be released and hunted by a gang of serial killers with their own individual personalities and methods.

In essence, it's a HOSTEL copy but lacking that film's disturbing content and surprisingly excellent direction. The actors have the most unrealistic reactions ever, the sound effects are too noisy, and the whole thing is violently unrealistic. A waste of time, in other words.

Just because it is low budget doesn't mean we can excuse it.

Warning: Spoilers
I don't think that I was suppose to laugh out loud at the ridiculous dialogue. In one of the violent scenes, when tormenting a victim who's hands are tied above her head, the torturer says, "By the time I'm finished with you, even hell won't have you." But she's the victim. Why would hell want to have the innocent victim? I shouldn't really be concerned with the dialogue being that the film doesn't really have a story but tries to find reasons to show people being tortured by psychotic killers. The inconsistencies here are all over the place, for instance a victim has a cigarette burn mark in their armpit before the cigarette is use to burn the arm pit. A deaf girl actually turns her head to see who's calling from another room. And a surprise reveal at the end that has no reason for the viewer to think otherwise.

Basically this is torture porn done purely. Bad makeup effects, terrible characters, goofy dialogue, and it's not even fun to watch while getting drunk with friends. Instead it was confusing and left us feeling gross.

The 2nd most awful film ever made
kobe897 February 2012
You can read my reviews to find the MOST awful. This film was actually watchable in comparison, as long as you're heavily tranquilized.

Firstly I'd like to say a HUGE thank you to the reviewer 'collegefilmreview' (nice try). So this was your first review right? It appears that even though you had time to watch this film twice, you have never had time to write another review.

You must remember Collegefilmreview, that most people do have more than 6 braincells and can see through the audacity of a production member writing a review praising a film of this measly caliber so highly.

In fact it's obvious which person wrote it - the HACKER (Darren Hawkins) - I mean come on.. college chicks begging for a Hawkins fan club? it's just ridiculous...

Anyway, back to the film... AWFUL. no plot, bad acting, bad dubbing, bad sound, bad lighting and camera work. It's not even Funny-Awful as people like in these kind of films.. it's Tiring-Awful, which is the worst kind of Awful. If you like Tiring-Awful then this is the film for you.

Why "The 7th Hunt"?
GregTheStopSign9516 September 2023
There's literally no hunting so I'd like to know why it's called "The 7th Hunt".

I'd also like to know why this was re-released in 2021 as "The Hunt" with almost NO changes. The only change being that they removed the scene of The Hacker that played at the end while the credits rolled.

The acting is bad, even for a low-budget Australian movie, the story is kinda terrible because, again, THERE IS NO FRIGGIN HUNTING, and the ending falls flat pretty quickly but at least the women are cute. Especially Callie.

If you HAVE to watch this movie, though, you should probably go watch the 2021 re-release instead.

ANOTHER BAD AUSSIE FILM
movieguy300026 July 2020
The constant need to make SAW type films, or supernatural and horror films is just mind-boggling. Indie films in Australia need to wake up and stop making poor intimation. It's hard making a film and efforts to all who made it but there is no excuse for poor character development, poor storytelling and extremely bad casting. This was so bad I saw someone walk out of the screening and never came back. I want everyone to succeed but we need need to stop making bad films. This is so cringy its so embarrassing. I actually feel bad for the cast and crew. It's hard to watch this film, it has nothing going for it at all except the looks of Imogen Bailey. Sorry I honestly tried to support this film but please dont waste your time. Films need strong compelling story and characters, they must be interesting and they must have emotion. Even for a saw style film, you must have some sort of emotion, likability of the main character. 1 star for effort.

Good idea but.....
sicklittlebunny21 March 2021
Firstly, anyone who compares this to the Saw franchise has massively misunderstood all the films, I can only assume, because they only watched them for the torture and gore without paying the slightest bit of attention to the storylines. It's like comparing Les Mis to The Muppets because they both have singing.

Anyway back to the film. This is a 3hr film crammed into 92mins and made on a 2 dollar budget. The idea of blood sports involving humans isn't a new one, but this take on it is at least reasonably original. "Five killers, five victims, one aim - to survive" accurate but misleading, the film does not focus so much on the victims but seemed to be trying to look at what in their pasts sent the killers down this path. Each killer has their own methods and reasons for killing, the only this keeping them together is mutually assured destruction (they each know the others names and crimes). The victims themselves are less important than the reasons they were chosen. However despite being able to see the writers intent in this film, the end product is underwhelming to say the least as everything is too rushed to give anything any depth. As soon as any explanation starts someone dies and the film moves on. You can't even really care about the victims because they're more or less a 5 word bio and some screaming.

A chilling, effective horror
A worthwhile horror/thriller that is more complex than just a killer knocking off victims for no discernible reason, too many low budget horror films lack a solid reason more than just wrong place, wrong time.

The story is more psychological than just cold blooded murder, and the victims are not innocent victims being slaughtered, each one has been studied and found lacking in some way.

The killers have a method to their killing and seem chillingly convinced of their own rightness in what they do. There was gore, but the best thing is that it wasn't over done.

The blood-letting was used effectively. I thought the whole ride was pretty entertaining.

Not good
zmoviefan1 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I love watching indie/low budget horror flicks, but this I couldn't even finish watching in one sitting.

No redeeming qualities whatsoever. I know how hard it is to get these made, then distributed, but it simply wasn't that original or had any likable characters. Just victims and killers. We learn very little about the would be victims and then, they just start getting tortured.

I'm sure some folks will like this, but the moment the one girl gets stabbed while helplessly being tied up I stopped watching AND I never do that. Honest. I did finish the movie the next day, but it got so unoriginal that I fast-forwarded most of it just to see who would make it till the end.

Sorry to be so harsh on this film but it just wasn't scary or entertaining. Just my opinion.

Dark and moody
nigellus7316 March 2011
For a low budget film, this one really packs a punch. There is enough blood to make the audience feel the character's pain. This film is dark and moody, with a concept that is truly disturbing. What happens in this film makes it a psychological thriller that will stay with you. The characters all have motivations for what they are doing, and the victims are a bunch of unique people. They all act as you would expect in this situation, which helps the audience empathise with them, feel their pain and frustration. The film plays out with twists and turns that are both believable and unexpected. Despite a slow pace at the start, the film picks up speed once the violence begins. This makes for a buildup of tension that drives the story to its conclusion. A brutal exposition of what people are capable of doing to other people.

our First Review
collegefilmreview10 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
yeah, this may contain spoilers, am just typing what we wrote down when we watched this one. Sorry !!!

Well, who are we? We're a group of guys and girls at college in Columbus who have decided to meet every month at one house, grab a stack of d.v.d's, lots of pizza and do what we do. We grabbed this one from the indie stack and as one of us lived in Oz for a while on student exchange we thought why not, at least Kym can translate for us if the accents are too bad. This is what we all wrote down on our slips of paper, just like they do in the movie houses when they ask for a review, but we had beer!!!

We liked the film!

The music was a bot over the top at the start, but i guess for a low budget film it was kinda OK. Not sure why the killers all meet and kill the people they do, but we kinda got the idea from the newspaper clippings at the start its all some conspiracy (if they are Aussies and they are like Mel Gibson, i wonder who they will blame it on??!?!)

The girls were split as to who they would tap, couple of us liked Sniper, while the rest wanted Hacker (what is he hiding under the leather jacket?!?!). We all thought the limp the director got Sniper do do was kinda dumb and made him look silly.

The guys all wanted Ariel, the deaf runner, but the sister Callie came a close second.

Acting - well one review said it was awful, but thats pretty harsh dudes. Hacker was the favorite of us all. The Aussie accent was almost not there, so we got him. Loved his humor especially when he cracked it at his victim for bleeding everywhere after he chopped a finger off .. and then chose which cooking spice to put on it! Kick Butt awesome! The girls thought he was hot and acted good. Same with Sniper. Knife was just scary, but he was great. The best of the victims was Ariel, who kicked ass with her acting and Callie. Most of us felt that the Inquisitor was too over the top and kinda crap, same with Ricky.

College Film Review Overall - we give the film a thumbs up and say to everyone rent it out! The director Cohen (well maybe we wont see a Mel Gibson sequel) and the co-director, the dude who played Hacker, did well. Davey told me to make sure we mention the DP (he's studying to be a DP so guess what he looked at more than anything else), as the DP did well too.

********************

short update -

we hired it again and bought a copy exrental and have one last comment.

The Hacker is the hottest now to us girls, including a few newbies to our group. We want him to come here and make us confess or maybe we will make him confess. :) JD COHEN, you MUST have him in more films in bigger roles so we can all watch him some more :) Does he have a fan mail we can talk to him? Are you going to work with him again or is he now just directing? we noticed on IMDb that he directed a feature film recently. Please don't let him just direct!!

and we still think the film rocks!

and also as much as we hate to say it we love Imogen to bits. just why she has to be so talented and good looking we think its so unfair, maybe the next movie should have the hacker and Ariels twin sister in it :)
