Completely unafraid to give representation, whilst telling the usual fun and quirky story you'd expect from Adventure Time

Obsidian review
arturdiz20 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Obsidian is the second special episode of Adventure Time. It takes place after the events of the finale and it follows Marceline and Bonnie. This episode was perfect, it expands post nuclear lore a lot with background designs and it also expands Marceline's mother, Elise. Bonnie and Marcy are, as always, great together and Glass Boy is an ok character. The surprise appearances of Finn, the Goose and Simon really surprised me, specially Finn, as he no longer has a mechanical arm and now has a beard and a tattoo of Jake, which will probably be explored in the last special. Overall, a great episode and I can't wait to see how they explore Peppermint Butler and Finn and Jake in the next episodes.

Really spectacular. Just a episode you have to watch to believe it's everything you want in an adventure time story.

Warning: Spoilers
Massive spoiler warning, potentially for the finale of season 1 of Distant Lands, so read on with that discretion in mind.

I have a theory. I had it before this episode aired, and this one goes a long way in confirming it. With the running concept of Jake getting old in the original series, I have spoken with several friends/fellow fans, that I think Jake's death is going to be depicted in Together Again. Finn looks closer to his age in "Come Along With Me" with Shoko's arm in the promotional poster for these Distant Lands. And in this episode, he's closer to my age (29) with a tattoo of his beloved ex-sidekick on his heart.

Now, as for Obsidian itself, it was a masterpiece. I was a little put off by the lack of Rebecca at first, but to be honest, the song Marcie sings to Bonnie in the climax, "Monster," is better than any song Rebecca contributed to the show. So math. And it's not like there wasn't tribute to Rebecca's legacy, with Glassboy's voice, and Simon singing "Remember You" in Dirtbeer Guy's tavern. <3

Wonderful episode!
MrPractical14 January 2021
A great, and touching, story about Marceline's past that gradulally fills in the blanks by jumping around in time. And it has a terrific message at the end.

And to baxter_clete: I guess you would consider any story featuring a non-straight relationship to be "propaganda"? Well guess what, I'm straight and I give it a 10, so go ahead - eat your hat!

A powerful and meaningful episode

Warning: Spoilers
Obsidian will have you in the adventures of marceline, and princess bubblegum. On their adventure to save the glass kingdom, from a dragon. Who marceline has trapped before. Without delving into any more spoilers, this episode is really powerful. It gives you a ton of emotion, and investment. Without failing. The songs are just beautiful, from a rock and roll song, to a meaningful love song, you will sing, dance and melt your heart out. This episode really cmade me love these. Two characters, even more than before.

"I'm a little bit soft"
kilipeti-705-7906712 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode didn't get to me at the beginning but at the end I was in tears as well as in "Together again".

The fact that they showed us a little more about the tragic childhood of Marceline that explained her desperation for being loved and not getting abandoned. And to imagine that she saw Simon abandoning him involuntarily for hundreds of years... This story weaved through all of Adventure Time so smartly... And her relationship with PB really had it's peak in this last episode of their story.

"It's not her fault I've got baggage" Oh the feels...

What we needed.
sablefilos6 January 2022
This was an amazing episode, we finally got to see PB and Marceline's relationship in full, with the writers completely acknowledging it instead of hinting at it. There were some soft moments where I almost broke down in tears.

Now criticism: I really really loved this episode, it was my second favorite, but I feel like this story just kept us waiting for more, it made me feel like there was more to the story, it almost fell like the beggining of Marceline and Pb's relationship. I understand that this story had to be condensed into one episode, but I really hope HBO makes more like this, going into the universe of Adventure Time.

Lacks the soul of Adventure Time.
paulhoets10 February 2021
Compared to the entire context of Adventure Time, or even just compared with Part 1 of Distant Lands, Part 2//Obsidian seemed lifeless. It was as if this was a homework assignment that needed to be handed in. This was not representative of the visually and emotionally beautiful, surreal but funny, intricately detailed flavor of Adventure Time.

It felt as if whomever was producing this episode was just focused on a to-do list of content, which was then tiredly executed.

BMO's story in Part 2 was full of tiny intricacies and apparently pointless detail that came together beautifully at the end: Obsidian was lots of.......myeh....

It didn't really put the viewer inside any new or inspiring perspectives, the characters were not given any personality, and what they experience isn't really fleshed out with enough feeling and detail.

Even visually, this episode was lacking and felt empty - could it be that a new animation team is being used? Worrying.

45 minutes went by very slowly, which I have never felt when watching Adventure Time, and its not the feeling I want when I watch Adventure Time.

Something Original. Astounding Writing.
austinsahs2 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode which is chalked full of witty writing, fun personalities, and most importantly, it explores some very deep and interesting topics about life. The episode explores prejudice, assumptions, and miscommunication regarding how our perspectives are often entirely wrong. The exploration of childhood trauma is phenomenal. You get a strong sense of the emotional turmoil Marceline goes through when she revisits the past, you are able to visualize how her destructive coping mechanism lead to the demise of her interpersonal relationship.

This episode deserves every star for the writing alone. This episode is not only fun to watch, but also instills a positive learning experience to anyone regarding trauma and our assumptions of it.

Good, but not amazing.
alexjlarabie20 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I, and every adventure time fan, crave more backstory and lore. This episode provides enough lore about PB and Marceline to be satisfying, and I really appreciate the bit of lore that we get. That being said, I wish we got more backstory about marcy's mom. Throughout the whole show, marcy's mom is pretty much shrouded in mystery - and all we get from this is that she raised Marceline and then died from some mysterious cough. The animation is different from the original adventure time, and also the first distant lands. Just because It is different, doesn't mean it's bad - in fact I think that the glass kingdom looks incredible, and the fighting animation is better than the original show. I dont think that the animation is better or worse - just different. The music in this episode doesn't feel like adventure time music. Don't get me wrong, Marceline's cover of Monster was amazing, but the other music lacked the adventure time flair. Marceline's original song when first saving the glass kingdom felt a little too pop-ish for adventure time's style. All of that being said - i still really enjoyed this episode. It had the charm and humour of adventure time, and Im so happy we got more about PB and Marcy. Also, Marceline's character in this matched EXACTLY to how her character in the show developed, and It felt really good seeing her character's final, developped state. We also got so see more of PB showing her softer side as she did with marcy in the ending song of the last episode which I aboslutely love for her character. The Finn and Bronwyn appearance at the end was also pretty great.

All in all, i'd give this something around a 7.8/10

glassboy please leave my nightmares
boomerluv17 April 2024
Gonna start by saying I love Adventure Time and this is my favorite episode of distant lands (mostly because PB and marcy's relationship is explored more in depth), but my god Glassboy's voice makes me wish I didn't have ears. How is that appealing to anyone except babies who won't even notice? It is beyond annoying which sucks because this episode is adorable. I can't even watch the ending scene where Glassboy is singing at the dance because it's all around just terrible to listen to and hurts my ears. Please never let this voice actress do this voice again I don't know how anyone can find it appealing to listen to.

I'm disappointed
maxdon-0432211 December 2020
To give context to this review, I'm a fan of Adventure Time and I liked the previous BMO movie.

I have seen this movie twice, the first time that I saw it I thought that it deserved 7/10 or even 8/10, but after having some time to think, and re-watching the movie, I now believe that it deserves a 3/10.

Now without going into spoilers: The concept of the movie is actually ok, after all it doesn't need to be anything ground breaking, all it needed to do, at the very least, was serve as a good way to showcase Princess Bubblegum's and Marceline's relationship. Did it accomplish that? Barely. Instead of bringing them together and showing their collective strength, all it did was separate them for a large chunk of the movie. Now you might be thinking "At least everything else was good, right?", and you would be wrong! The execution was also very iffy, there were flashback that just plainly spelled out what was hinted at in the original series, emotional moments weren't really emotional, and lots of other things, it's hard to talk about this without spoiling stuff. The worst part of it all was the ending in my opinion, it was very random and nonsensical, making it very unsatisfactory and boring. A nitpick, but they changed the animation style for some reason...

Now there are some good point to this movie: The singing was good, when characters interacted for not plot related reasons it was good

Seems like a boring after school special
joshuawait11 December 2020
About half way through the second episode, I became bored. It was painful to watch. I just wanted it to end. The original series packed more fun, action, and hilarity in 11 minutes than this one did into 45 minutes. The predictable and obvious messaging in this episode felt like an after school special targeted at tweens: We're all cracked and we need to accept ourselves. Shallow and predictable. One of the best aspects of the original series was how authentic it felt and how complicated the characters were. Treetop had an entire episode where she talked about her previous lovers and husbands. Jake had an episode where he became jealous of his granddaughter and tried to compete with her for the sake of looking cool. Marceline was angry at her dad, not because he was the cruel lord of the hellish Nightosphere, but because he ate her french fries. The writers and actors poured their hearts out for the original series. I hope the new writing crew can move forward with better focus, clarity, and wit. Otherwise the second series is destined to become a limp and faltering reboot.

Super boring and cringe
imcgrunt22 March 2023
Ok so if you're an OG adventure time fan and enjoyed the portrayals of both Princess Bubblegum and Marceline in the original series then I'm sorry to inform you but you won't be getting none of that in obsidian, the way these characters are displayed in obsidian is as if they have both lost 70% of what made them unique in the first time, remember that Anti-villain Princess and that Goth Vampire chick, yeah imagine both of them as regular normal people trying to make a relationship work, that's essentially what this is, Thayer no longer unique individuals, it honestly feels like the writers purposely downgraded their personalities to make it easier to write them into a relationship because otherwise it makes no sense, how can they all of a sudden be super happy with each other after 100s of years of an unstable relationship, strait up makes 0 sense.

Secondly the romance feels like it was written by a 9 year old, it's full of super cheesy and cringe lines and I found myself having to pause a lot to not die from cringe.

In conclusion if you enjoyed PB and Marcys old personalities then don't expect much from Obsidian, they're both fragmented versions of their previous interpretations, it's sad, it's disappointing and it's bad character development, what a way to make two characters terrible.

A BGP and Marceline story
TheTruthofItIs5 May 2021
Whereas the first featurette of "Distant Lands" was BMO-centric, this second featurette from HBO Max is all about the Bubblegum Princess and Marceline. And yes, they went very PG-13 with their SS/L relationship. It's clear that "Distant Lands" is permitting the creators/writers to escape the G-rated confines of AT to expand on broader dimensions of character. Surprisingly, we don't get to see Marceline's vampire father at all but we do meet her rather plain/normal though brown-skinned mother, more head scratching than excitement there. As with "BMO" there's none of the other AT characters like Finn & Jake though we do see adult Finn but he's not addressed as such, yeh, weird. The fantasy animation is still intriguing and the glass people are kind of interesting but overall this is really meh, unless you're really into BGP and M.
