Could have been much better.

I really do love the Spyro series, but they've just been going downhill. This one really wasn't much of an exception either. I think there should have been more than just five excruciatingly long levels. Another five more levels would have helped wonders. Some parts of the game lagged REALLY badly as well. Better camera angles would have been nice as well. As for the storyline, I thought it was OK, but it still had some holes that could have used some filling in. Personally, the only REAL entertainment I got was whenever Sparx threw out one of his cheesy lines.

Would I recommend it? Eh, it's hard to say. Buying, nah. If you've got spare change for a rent, MAYBE consider it.

Is the Sequel as Good?

The sequel to the reboot can be compared by a lot. I was disappointed by its low rating. Though I found the game enjoyable, I cannot argue with the negative reactions. Once again, I know because I watched the PS2 version on YouTube.

I see the difficulty got on people's nerves. For starters, players were annoyed by "wave after wave of enemies". Thinking it'd take forever, that'll lead to stiff hands. The DS version, which I have, is not as good as the PS2 version. It's too easy to kill the enemies in the DS version. Pretty dishonourable to kill a dragon when its player gets tired.

Even though the timeline was short, it was more specific on the PS2 version, and it's more fun. The DS version has stiff images and maybe a couple glitches. But the music was so good. So, I ask myself if I only like it for the music--that and the cast. I understand there were challenges to keep the game going.

Elijah Wood and Gary Oldman return while Mae Whitman is Cynder and Billy West is Sparx. Billy was the best voice of Sparx because his high voice was right for a bug's voice. And comic mischief, my ass. I saw no humour. All jokes were just groaners. Kevin Michael Richardson--his tough, demonic voice was perfect for Gaul. In fact, it's right for any villain's voice.

What I liked about this game is the cast, the graphics, and Spyro's amazing attacks.

Very Frustrating
iksnyzcar6 October 2009
I have never played a Spyro game before so when I saw it on the clearance shelf for $3.50 new I thought why not. After playing thru the game I now know why it was there. Well they say you get what you pay for and I sure did.

First off I do have to say I did like the voice acting. The game really has a good cast which includes Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman, and Billy West. Saddly that is the only thing I really enjoyed with this game.

Now for what was bad about the game. The game itself is really short. The developers upped the difficulty to make the game seam longer. This game was a lot harder than you would think. Looking at who the target audience would be for a game about a purple dragon this would be a mistake. A lot of the things that makes this game hard just should not be in a game. Spyro himself is not the easiest character to control. And some bad camera work and you have a problem.

The game length should be about 5 hours given the levels but expect it to take about 3x that because of the problems.

what the heck happened!! (contains spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
I've only played spyro 2, and spyro 3 and enjoyed them, so when I saw this one on the discount shelf, I wasn't sure about buying it, but my younger brother wanted it, well, we bought it, and I can honestly say, it was a disappointment. The portals that took spyro to different worlds were gone, and replaced with certain themed levels with enemies that took too long to kill, and getting through them would put you on the edge of sanity(getting killed multiple times for no apparent reason), I finally beat the game hoping to acquire a power flame attack like in spyro 2, instead, I got dark spyro, the only redeeming quality of the entire game. another issue: spyro himself(regular spyro) , I hate to say it, but he looks awful, I mean come on, they've had ten years to improve him and they turned out with this! he is nothing like he used to be! heck, he looks and sounds nervous, I didn't know whether to continue playing the level, or try to find him some psychiatric help! as for his powers, I was infuriated to find that he has a magic bar that has to be refilled, I got killed many times trying to get to a green crystal, i'll cut to the chase, if you have a short temper, stay away from this game. if you don't already have spyro 2, go and try to find a copy. If you have the money to burn, go ahead and rent "the eternal night". I like spyro 2 because it doesn't keep you in the same level for what seems like eternity, spyro isn't nervous, and simply because it's more original. The only reason I would recommend "the eternal night" is dark spyro, although it takes forever to unlock.
