Summing Up So Far
rmax30482331 July 2014
The end of 1917 and the war continues, with almost all the attention given to the Western front and the battle between the British and German armies.

But no land battles are described. The episode is a pause, a kind of summing up of the situation so far, mostly on the home front but also in the air and on the sea.

The attitude towards the enemy has now turned pitiless. Each side demands victory now, after having invested so much treasure in the war effort. England begins rationing food. German bread is made from wild grasses, coffee from walnut shells and raspberry leaves.

The men being at the front, women join the labor force in droves, accomplishing for womanhood what the suffragettes hadn't been able to. Everyone involved in the war is working hard and going broke.

Most interesting footage: the women's labor force marching along a London street carrying placards reading, "Equal Pay For Equal Work."
