Thoroughly impressed
therocinante17 December 2007
I generally don't like war games, or even first-person shooters very much. But something about this title gripped me from the beginning. I think it must have been the way it made my heart pound as I worked through the campaign, sweating every time I threw an enemy grenade back and wondering if I had enough time on the fuse. Or being severely outnumbered with just myself and a wounded sniper, feeling doomed yet somehow making it through. This is one of the few games which takes me out of myself (the way a really great movie does) and throws me into the shoes of an SAS soldier or Marine, and has me wondering if I'll make it to the end.

I'm not a game reviewer, but these are some things that have earned Infinity Ward high marks in my book with this title: Graphics - As of today (December '07), these are the best visuals a game has to offer, and sometimes I find myself just walking around an area admiring the detail that went into it. The frame rate (at least on the 360) remains pretty consistent, and the fluidity of movement is silky smooth from start to finish.

Pacing - Not once was I bored during the campaign. It's fast paced, but not in an unrealistic way - you're on the edge of your seat because there's "hostiles" all around you, and you can't afford the luxury of being bored.

Difficulty - I'm glad to see that a higher difficulty here does NOT mean an enemy who takes more shots, but rather one with faster reflexes, sturdier aim, and more strategic grenade-lobbing.

Sound effects - I don't know how many people look for good sound effects in a game, but for me, they tend to be a major factor, and I appreciate the satisfyingly diverse sounds of each weapon, or the "ping" grenades make as they bounce towards you, and yes, even the "thup" of hitting your target.

Story - About the highest compliment I could give this game is that it plays like a superbly made war drama. It's one part story driven, and one part simulator. The overall story and character involvement make it feel like something much more epic than just a first-person shooter, though if all you happen to care about is shooting, the story doesn't get in the way of that, either. The campaign ends with a dramatic conclusion, and I frankly hope there are never talks of making this franchise into a movie, because Call of Duty 4 goes beyond the limits of what films are capable of.

(also, the music is commendable, simply because I generally don't think I'd want much of a soundtrack for realism's sake, but Stephen Barton's work here is beautifully sublime, and sets the mood well)

I want his NAME!
petra_ste12 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Technically superb, tightly plotted, fast-paced and wonderfully cinematic, Call of Duty 4 is one of the best war first-person shooters ever made.

The game quickly shows off its qualities: after a brief tutorial we get a great level on a ship, then an amazing credit scene - a steady-cam sequence seen through the eyes of a man dragged through a Middle Eastern city to be executed: a chilling, brilliant moment worthy of Brian De Palma.

Call of Duty 4 is a roller-coaster ride. You never get that "enough with this damn level!" feeling plaguing many games. There are also touches of class such as plot twists and playable flashbacks (the mission with Price in Chernobyl is easily one of the best levels I have EVER played in a FPS). A.I is remarkable: although main events are scripted, both your allies and enemies are reasonably flexible.

The game has two flaws. First, the single player campaign, while an excellent gaming experience, is fairly short. Second, although you do have a key impact on every battle, deaths or survivals of your team members feel staged - which means they won't die unless the plot requires them to.

Stay through the credits for a bonus level.

Beautiful. This game will make one hell of a movie.
USPEffect20 February 2008
This game is well worth the price. Storyline and even the online multilayer are amazing. IW has very well succeeded in making a video game that displays real war. The ending is also worth fighting for. This is one of the rare few games that certainly are the best of the best.

When playing the musical score is excellent. It Certainly succeeds in highlighting scenes of sorrow, joy, honor, duty, and sacrifice. Also not to forget the heart pounding adrenaline when you repel out of a black hawk helicopter into a middle eastern town filling with 360 degree of danger.

A must get game!

Best in the series, best ever!
Gunmaster4526 December 2007
As soon as I started this game on Christmas night, I knew I would love it. The graphics stun and make you think it's real. The guns reload as should and even shoot through walls and other flimsy material. The modern military tech is very impressive. The game will seriously make your heart pound. The game doesn't glorify war, it shows how messed up it can be with many things like, friends dying, see death through the eyes of others, rescue missions, and even an amazing assassination with a .50 caliber Barrett. From infiltrating a boat to sniping men while wearing Ghillie, you'll be amazed. The stealth missions are tense and full of suspense while firefights are full of action and violence. Infinity ward really took the gold with this game. The only down side is that the game is short. I beat it in one night but it did take all night so the game takes maybe 6 hours on normal but up the difficulty and you've got a couple days to play. Also, play the multi-player. It has a 1-50 rank, customizable weapons and it's full of action. I loved it. If you don't buy this game, you'll be missing a classic without a doubt.

Aaaaaaaaaaaargh!!! The Next Generation is in the hizouse!!!
thomas-hardcastle-218 November 2007
What an incredible piece of game-making.

By far, the best graphics yet seen on any platform.

Action, action, action. No more wandering around, going, "er...where do I go now?" Nothing but action. The bad guys crawl out from anywhere, like six-foot roaches with machine guns.

A level of realism previously unachieved in any field of entertainment.

The graphics look silky and photo-realistic. I refer not solely to the facial features and the movement and stances of the characters, but also to the incredible backgrounds that da Vinci would have been proud of.

You get the feeling you're in a war - not a computer game. You feel attached to the game, and lose concentration in the real world, to such an extent that you'll lose track of time, and maybe even be late for work/school/auditions/AA meetings.

Without doubt, this game is the one that will change everything. Halo? HALO? Nothing compared to this. Honestly, buy this game. You have no reason to dislike anything about it, apart from maybe the price.

This game has raised the bar so high, that I'm certain some developers who were a couple of months away from releasing their own FPS will have to delay their games' releases to have a major overhaul to catch up.

Call of Duty 4 is streets ahead of anything else out there. Get it. Play it. Love it. Live it.

Lots of love, Thomas Hardcastle

Close to gaming perfection
tyranid_slayer23 December 2007
Finally after much anticipation i finally got a copy of call of duty 4 and have now finished the game.

The main story is how a Russian ultranationalist party wants to bring Russia back to it's soviet days. The leader of the ultranationalists is Imran Zackaev and he uses a middle eastern terrorist, Kahled Al Asad to draw attention away from the russians.

Playable characters jump between several characters. You play S.A.S sergent Soap Mactavish, Sergent Paul Jackson of the U.S.M.C and also a very fun one off mission were you go flashback 15 years and play as captain price.

The graphics are incredibly detailed and every tiny detail is catered for.

The story was a fantastic idea considering how call of duty has jumped from world war 2 to the modern day.

Online is where the fun really lies. There are hundreds of different online games but my favourite is ground war which is basically your team deathmatch but with LOTS more players and it actually feels like a warzone with grenades, explosions and bullets happening all around you.

A very deep experience and certainly worth your money, definitely my game of the year.

Astounding

Despite slight flaws, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the greatest games that came out this year. If you like First Person Shooters, you will love COD4. With realistic war zones and a good storyline, the controller will be hard to put down. Although Call of Duty 4 is fill with nonstop action and violence, it gives you a sense of what real war would be like, and you begin to appreciate real-life soldiers. GameInformer rated Captain Price one of the best heroes of the 2007 as a gaming year. Never are you so delighted to be ordered around by a guy with a mustache.

Graphics: 9/10: Great graphics, with slight flaws in grass and thin layered items.

Controls: 10/10: The scoping system is wonderful and I love how you can stab people in the back.

Realism: 10/10: The war zones and situations are so life-like in COD4 that you feel yourself simultaneously slashing with the controller as if it was a knife while pressing the mêlée weapon.

Difficulty: 9/10: I beat the game on the Recruit difficulty setting, and I had no problem (it was the easiest). So I tried to repeat one of the latter levels on Veteren (the hardest setting), and I was utterly annihilated.

Excellent best Call of Duty yet
doomster92713 January 2008
I have played just about every Call of Duty game out there and this is by far the best one. First off the visuals are excellent the visuals are truly some of the best. The look of explosions and battle worn areas in the middle east is intense. It's great to just look around(when your not getting shot at) and realize the scope of how much work was put into the game to make it look so good.

The sound is great its like they went onto an actual battlefield and recorded everything.Explosions and gunshots sound just so great its probably as best there gonna get for the moment.Voice acting was great the actors did a stand up job sounding like the characters they were. It's always great when a voice actor does a great job and makes the character more believable.

Game play is the best Call of Duty game play ever.Nothing was wrong with it unlike Call of Duty 3 which seemed to have physics to have problems as often id get stuck on a tire.Coming off that note the physics and frame rate are excellent and hardly ever falter. The controls in this game were tight and easy to learn. This COD game perfected the throw back grenade function which was first introduced in COD3.The use of a knife as a melee attack was also entertaining and to me was more believable then beating a man to death with a rifle butt.Guns seemed to be as strong as they should be and fired like they should. For once a storyline was attempted that didn't all but just make you want to skip the cut scenes as it was interesting and could draw you in.The one thing i wished there was more of was guns. There are a lot of guns there but there all kind of obvious that they would be there for example there were just about 2 million times i could of used an AK-47 i know its one of the most mass produced guns in the world but add more variety come on. Also many times i found myself forced to use an m4 assault carbine and had few chances to use an m-16 which i believe is a better gun.I found it a little odd the British S.A.S. was using the m4 and not the standard British rifle the L85 which was a gun i was really hoping to see.(I only have this problem with the campaign.) Multiplayer leaves nothing to be desired. The multiplayer is excellent its easy to just jump in and play the game and actually be good at it.There is a good variety of weapons on multiplayer and some customization to be done to the weapons.Plenty of match types that people could want or need.

All around Call of Duty is the best war game i have ever played and I've played enough of them.I own it for the ps3 and have not experienced many problems with it.Best war game out there and best COD of the series.

Words can't describe...
Jack_Bauer_CTU_FO8 November 2007
I've only played the online mode at my friends house, and let me tell you, It is by far THE GREATEST WAR GAME AND FIRST PERSON SHOOTER EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES!!!! But even that can't describe it's greatness. This game is full of some much realism that I felt I was shell-shocked. It feels like you're in the 2001 film, Black Hawk Down. I recommend you buy this Immediately!!!! In fact, buy 2 copies. This game will bury the Halo Series since the Halo trilogy is pretty much dead.

Features

WEAPONS:M16A1, M4A1, AK-47, M249, M60E4, MP-5, P90, UZI 9mm, Barreta M9, HK USP, Desert Eagle, RPG-7, M40A1, M21, and many more.

Detructable environments, Airstrikes, and much much more. You'll be very satisfied with this game.

Best First Person Shooter Ever
acelenoir10 November 2007
I've been playing video games for 20 years. And every time a shooter comes out I jump all over playing it. I guess the only thing that I can say is... none of them, not Halo 3 not Ghost Recon 2 and not Battlefield 2, hold a candle to this game. It has of the smoothest game-play. Massive types of games to play (online). And some of the best graphics to currently be found on any system. If you like shooters of any type, then it would be easy to say that you would love this game. I would say that this game would get my "Greatest Of All Time" award (if I actually gave one out). The online game-play allows for you to slowly move into different weapons. It also allows for you to slowly add power ups, but prevents you from stacking these power ups. Add this with the fact that you are able to create up to 5 different preset classes and you've got something different, one way or the other, than the other players on the board. Now don't get me wrong there are some setbacks. One thing is that it does not have the depth of customization as Rainbow Six Vegas. It also does not allow for split screen online play like Halo 3. But, and this is a strong but, all it will take for you is one time. One! And you will agree that this game is amazing.

COD4 Great FPS but it's no Crysis
ronin_WTF15 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
So yet again I venture into the new FPS PC games. This time its COD4: Modern Warfare. The graphics are actually quite good matched with some realistic weapon sounds. It features a unique concept of being able to play cross console on a LAN. That is if you network your PC with your friends XBOX 360 you can pummel them.

The story line is very basic, your standard shoot em up though there are geographical errors. The weapons are up to date and ballistics are fairly accurate. Don't buy this game if you are looking for the next generation in gaming as the graphics are no where near that of Crysis. However on the whole it is a decently put together game. Runs great on dual GeForce Ultras. My only major grip is that it has awkward controls but even these are easily corrected in the options menu.

Hasn't Everyone Learned About This In History Class
yellowtooth1117 April 2014
Asking someone if war games suck, is like asking someone if the sky is blue, there is no reasoning to the fact that war games have ruined the world in various different ways. As awful as it may sound, it continues to worsen. During the revolutionary year of 2007, Infinity Ward brought humiliaton upon themselves with their most foul lauch to date,"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,".

This game was so terrible, that it was practically built from the ground up, only to satisfy pure douche bags, which is 95% of modern day teenages. After playing and learning new information about this failure series installment, it is proved fact that the graphical works in this game are completely made up of pixels and coding.

Seeing as that this game sucks, it still remains a huge financial success, due to the public and their petty opinions, that spark the falling of a great video game developer, all because they were fooled by the encouraged usage of the art of repetitive gaming into the continuing production and creation of these sh** worthy games that are destroying this world as we know it.

A quick way to summarize Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, is that it is a failure attempt to reunite the series that once popularized the war fighting genre. A much faster way to summarize this bullsh**, is that it's completely nauseating to watch, and I don't recommend playing this disaster.

Top-Notch First -Person Action
aledhughes14 January 2008
I was never a fan of the previous games in the Call of Duty series but I must say that Infinity Ward has created a wonderful game.

The first 3 missions give you great idea of what is to come. Call of Duty 4 has a perfect mixture of stealth, sniping and all guns blazing warfare. This game is the first I've played where I truly feel as if I'm in a war zone. You either play as a British SAS agent or a US Marine and you have to contend with the enemy's bullets, grenades, exploding cars and tanks. In Call of Duty you have no control over your squad but you really feel immersed in the action as it unfolds.

The graphics and sound in the game are superb. The environments and soldiers both look realistic and the lighting casts shadows and sun glare beautifully. The soundtrack provides music which fits the mood of the game perfectly and you can hear explosions in the distance as well as the 'tinging' noise of ricocheting bullets.

Online play is fantastic. There is a great variety of modes ranging from your standard death-matches to some excellent objective-based team games. Rarely, do you encounter a poor game. The only problem with the online system is the poor lobby which doesn't give you the option to choose specific games to suit your needs. However, the game has a top-notch ranking systems which rewards you for good play by giving you extra weapons and perks as well as game modes.

The single player game is a little short but I have not come across one as good as Call of Duty 4. If your a fan of First-Person Shooters you will love this game. If not, you may still be converted to the genre because of the quality of this title.

It's great, clean fun.
simon64716 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
If I had to call a best FPS of all time, Call of Duty 4 would definitely be in my top whatever.

This game is relentless, it's powerful and it's pretty, plus it's DAMN fun. Remember playing as a modern-day SAS operative in Russian territory? I sure don't. Remember playing an American soldier in Iraq? Well, Battlefield 2 did things pretty close to that... But doing it with the actual USMC behind your back, giving hell to the Iraqi? I don't think so. This game shows that you can have non-stop gunplay action and still be fun, while remaining intelligent. I'm not one to praise story lines when the games rock so much, but I have to say that every single moment of tension in the game works really damn well.

So, Call of Duty 4 is "realistic" in some ways, fun, pretty and it also has great immersion. What's the catch? I don't think there's much of one, but you could get at the developers of the game for making the main protagonist as always this silent gimp guy who does everything everyone asks him to. But, the way I look at it... If Captain Price becomes the kickass SAS operative he is after having been a mute in Tchernobyl, I suppose all our -surviving- characters become as much eventually. Yes, for once in CoD4, we're reminded that human life, no matter how brave it can be, can be erased in an instant.

Only problem though is that the game homo-erotically explains that you need a Nuclear Bomb to kill off the USMC. Still, it helps to feel like you're side by side with world-wide elite counter-terrorists and military organizations alike. Wading through armies of Russian soldiers or iraqi terrorists only gets fun when they're getting obliterated by a pack of 6 or so.

The A.I. is, as it's always been in those games, kind of lacking. Sure they move and act stylized, but they still are scared of going forward without you when you reach a certain script. Like "Soap! Plant a claymore in front of the door!" or "Get on that machinegun and blast the entirety of the enemies we can't shoot from here!" It sounds good but it always seems like your partners always wait for you to do things, instead of every now and then appearing autonomous.

The enemies have that weird "twitch" that wills them to shoot you and only you once you get into the room, until one of your teammates decides to shoot them. To top that little A.I. problem, there are quick-time events in this game. Which pretty much act as random "PRESS V TO NOT DIE HERE". This usually happens only when dogs tackle you.

At any rate, this is a very good game whose bad points can easily be overlooked. Plus, the multiplayer is very effective, too.

You'll become addicted to this game for at least a few weeks.

Modern War for a Modern Game
DesertDogMedia2 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Title: Call of Duty4: Modern Warfare

Developed by: Infinity Ward Published by: Activision

Completion Time: 8 Hours

Storyline: As the title would suggest, this game is set during the modern time of the late 20th to early 21st century, which makes a change from the first 3 Call of Duty games being set during WW2. But never fear, Treyarch will be sending the franchise back to WW2 in the next game. As soon as you press the "Start Mission" button you are shown an opening cutscene to provide you with plotting exposition about a guy in the middle east who is getting more power, and that is all you're going to know for the time being. The SAS missions will generally be stealth based with you neutralizing enemies with silenced weapons and tactics. The first mission will have you boarding a cargo ship to receive documents from a container containing radioactive material, once you have got the documents the ship will start sinking due to incoming fire from MIGs, once you make it out of the ship you'll have to complete a quick time event to jump for the helicopter. I won't necessarily go into great detail about every mission, just give a brief summery for the levels which don't contain that much story. Needless to say the next level is just a "sit back and admire our graphics engine" level, where you are the president of an unnamed middle eastern country and you're being kidnapped by the guy who looks a hell of a lot like Yusuf from GTA 4 BOGT. 3 levels in and we are introduced to Sgt. Jackson who is with the USMC. For these missions it is generally always going to be run, cover and shoot. You would fare better by not being by yourself at most times as the AI in your allies seems to be better than other games as they can hit and kill a lot more targets than you can, they also make good as human shields for when there is little cover.

Depending on the difficulty you like to play on, you might die more than a couple of times. This can become aggravating at times as the death screen will tell you that grenades and flaming vehicles explode. This wouldn't be so bad if I was only done once or twice, no it is done every time you are killed by an explosion. But if you are killed by standard gunfire, you will be given a quote about war or nations during wartime, this can be very interesting and almost outweigh the annoyance of the condescending explosion death scene.

But you get word of nuclear weapons being found, but first you decide to go and rescue a pilot in a down helicopter. You're able to get to her in time, but just on your escape in the helicopter there a nuclear explosion which sends a shockwave out and this downs all of the helicopters. You are then forced to play as Sgt. Jackson as he slowly dies of radiation poisoning until he blacks out. This was one of the stable points of the game. Weapons of mass destruction are used to kill one of your main character. This ends the USMC missions until the 3rd act. The SAS track down the man who the marines were looking for and find he is in a safehouse in Azerbaijan, so the SAS go in while working with the Russian loyalists, they take out all of the ultranationalist forces and tie up their man after Price beats him half to death. But during the interrogation, he gets a call. Price answers the phone before executing the guy. This adds to the list of war crimes portrayed during this game. Use of WMDs (Weapons of mass destruction), murder of unarmed solders and massacres of civilians. The next level is kicked off as Price talks about who was on the phone and what this means. The level revolves around Price and Captain Macmillan as ghillie snipers trying to get to a sniping point to take down an illegal arms deal. So you have to follow Macmillan through the abandoned Pripyat city, sniping each soldier you come across while working to not be seen. After you get to the sniping point you then wait there for a couple of days until Zakhaev shows up, you take the shot on a high powered rifle and take his arm off. The next level consists of you finding out the location of Zakhaev's son who still looks like Yusuf from GTA, you arrive in advance and take out the soldiers already there and plan an ambush, this leads to you chasing him down to an apartment complex, this ends with him shooting himself as he is surrounded.

The last level has you gunning from a truck that get knocked over, and you have to watch helplessly as the people you've spent the whole game learning about get executed by Zakhaev and his men. But the Russian Loyalists come just in time to distract him and his men while Price slides you a gun and you shoot and kill Zakhaev and his men.

Overall Feel: The story was a good length, made coherent sense for the most part and offered interesting twists at points. Health regeneration system was as good as you can really get on a first person realistic shooter. Graphics look good for a 360/PS3 era game. Gun mechanics worked well, especially for sniper rifles which allow you to steady your aim. Not too happy with the AI for some of the Marines which just run up to enemies to and let themselves die, but apart from that, there is nothing I can really complain about, except the fact that Modern Warfare 2 and 3 won't be as good because they'll be trying too hard to be different but still be Modern Warfare 1

Warning: Spoilers
Positive: + very nice realistic graphics + Great sounds + Really cool weapons + The movie sequences are cool + Good control + Beautiful places + Lots of action + Great Story

I love COD 4. One of my favorite games. Very well implemented. When you play the character it feels like watching a realistic movie. It's really cool. Only 1 point deduction because it is a bit difficult in some places. Otherwise a top game. > 9/10 *

A Realistic War Game
h-rabbit15 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Call of Duty 4 beats all previous Call of Duty games and World at War because its based on modern warfare, not World War II, which no one cares about anymore. It's a great and well-designed FPS game and really brings the series to an entirely new level.

Campaign - The campaign is short and relatively easy, with few teammates with you, tonnes of enemies ahead of you, and quite a varied and breathtaking set of missions, from stealthy two-man infiltrations to noisy and explosive massive-scale assaults. But then there comes Veteran difficulty, which is a killer. Due to the realistic nature of the game, enemies still go down easily, but you can die within half a second of a full-on encounter with one. And that gets harder when you realise there's a whole squadron of them after you. And the last mission, not providing any spoilers, is near-impossible in Veteran difficulty, with only a single minute to complete it! A good and structured campaign with a few flaws gets a 7/10.

Multiplayer - This game's online multiplayer gaming is better than Gears of War 2, but is still inferior to Halo 3. What's extremely annoying is the fact that more accomplished players are able to hold better weapons, meaning what whilst more experienced soldiers show off their advanced gadgets, the low newbies who don't know how to play the game are left to deal with weaker guns. But what's good is that you gain experience for every kill or assist you do. For example, in Halo 3, you can be the best in the whole game, but if your teammates are rubbish, you may lose and not even get a single experience point even though you were the best. Call of Duty 4 covers that issue, and not only that, it gives EXP for assists too. Many players weaken foes but not get the finishing blow and receive nothing for their effort, but in Modern Warfare you even get a bit of experience for helping teammates. With a mixture of the air strikes, choppers, UAVs, and the fact that it'll take years for an average player to become the top rank ever (after passing the 55th ten times), Multiplayer deserves a 9/10.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a fantastic game and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of First-Person Shooter and loves short but epic games.

Total Mark: 8/10

Try the Ferris Wheel level on Veteran
WasiReviews3 August 2020
You'll spend at least 3 hours trying to beat one level in veteran, if you haven't played this game I highly recommend it. Does it have flaws yeah but the remaster does the campaign justice and improves the graphics but ruins the multiplayer by adding micro-transaction curse those damn things. Controls are top of the line, it looks like a battlefield in modern times with stealth ops and awesome Russian opponents. Although I will say the creators of Call of Duty are incredibly Russo-phobic but fudge it these games are awesome this is not the best of the trilogy MW2 was better it's still a blast and worth your time. Keep in mind this reinvented the genre forever than had it tarnished by the futuristic Call of Duties after Call of Duty Ghosts

The Game That Saved Call of Duty
ryanwmullally8 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is a masterpiece from start to finish, and was the first game in the series to break away from it's World War II setting, and be set in present day. Like man other fans of the series, I can agree that this was the game that catapulted the series and introduced it to a wider range of players, who still play today for its fun action, intense and emotion sciences, and probably the most well written story in the entire series (other than Black Ops).

Campaign: The game takes place in 2011, when the leader of an Untranationalists terrorist organisation named Imran Zacheav try to take over Russia and wish to return the country back to what it was during the days of the Soviet Union, starting a civil war between the Goverment and the Ultranationalists. Meanwhile, a coup occurs in the Middle East orchasteated by Khaled Al-Asad. You play as both Soap Mactavish in the British Special Forces, fighting alongside Captain Price, and Paul Jackson in the U.S Marines. Captain Price has become the most iconic character in the entire series, and is a total badass filled with plenty of sarcastic and witty dialogue. I'm aware that he appeared in the first Call of Duty game, but this was the game whers the character really got a chance to shine. Once you've finished training, your first official mission is to hyjack a cargo ship in the Bering Strait after recieving intel courtesy from a Russian informant, who we will later learn is named Nikolai. After you and your team kill everyone onboard and receive the package, the ship is suddenly attacked by enemy helicopters, resulting in you, Price, and the rest of your team having to make a daring escape in the now sinking ship. It is a great mission and prepare you for the action-packed game your about to play. Not long after, Khaled Al-Asad sends his sinister message to the world by executing President Al-Fulami on national television, finally causing the Americans to invade the capital city in search of Al-Asad. But the mission ultimately fails when the realise that Al-Asad had already escaped the city before they arrived, and had walked into a deadly trap to all be killed in a giant nuclear explosion, including Jackson. While that happens, Soap, Price, and Gaz travel to Russia to meet with Kamarov and his loyalist rebels and to save Nikolai who's been held captured by enemy lines. As they attempt to leave after saving Nikolai, their helicopter is of course shot down, and the team have to fight their way through the Russian countryside, killing a bunch of Untranationalists, before finally being rescued. When Price and his team learn about the nuke in the Middle East, they attempt to track down Al-Asad at his safehouse, where they learn that Al-Asad had been collaborating with Imran Zacheav. And Price tells his men about the time when he was a leftenant under the command of Captain Macmillan in a top-secret mission to assassinate Zacheav in Chernobyl, which leads to one of the best missions in Call of Duty history "All Ghilled Up". The assassination attempt fails, and Price only manages to blow off Zacheav's arm, and then him and Macmillan must make a daring escape. The reason why I think "All Ghilled Up" and "One Shot, One Kill" are such important missions is because it puts Price in the same position that you play as Soap, which I feel makes Price way more relatable, and portrays him as a human rather than a larger-than-life hero. Back in present day, Soap, Price, and the rest are rescued by the Americans after killing Al-Asad, and from then on, the U.S and British form a joint operation to finally kill Zacheav. When they realised that Zacheav's son, Victor Zacheav may be their ownly lead, they attempt to track him down, but unfortunately, he shoots himself before he could reveal the location of his father. Outraged by the death of his son, Zacheav threatens to nuke the whole east coast of America. In order to prevent Zacheav from starting World War III, Price and his team must invade to launch facility. But before they could enter the facility, they witness two missles being launched, heading directly towards the United States, but fortunately the team find their way into the facility and manage to stop the nukes from reaching their targets, saving America from annihilation. Afterwards, they see Zacheav escape in one of the helicopters, and the team decide to follow the helicopter and take it out. But before they could do it, Zacheav's helicopter destroys half of the bridge, forcing their truck to crash, and defend themselves against enemy reinforcements. After Soap and Price are injured, they can't do anything but helplessly watch their fellow soldiers being killed. But when they come face to face with Zacheav on the bridge, Price slides Soap a pistol to finally kill the mudak once and for all. With Zacheav now dead, Price and Soap lay there dying, before Kamarov and his men come to the rescue to bring them home.

I will say, even though their both so old now, I still think that Modern Warfare and World at War are greatest games in the series, and still feel that every recent Call of Duty games that is released every year still fails in comparison.

To me, and many others, this was where it all began and why the series has become so popular, and as always, I highly recommend it.

Awesome game... One of the best of all time
emmi_is_a_unicorn24 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
the game itself is great with multi-player being amazing.

the problem with one player is that its actually quite short but when you complete the game you unlock a thing called arcade mode, which you can try to get the highest score possible and getting a high kill streak makes your score go up more and is fun if you like comparing scores with your friends.

multi-player is really excellent because of its customizable features being able to choose your primary weapon and side arms and you can add attachments to them. In multi-player they also have perks for example you could have increased health or higher damage. they also have levels to unlock the weapons and perks but they don't really give a person an advantage just more options.

this game is just absolutely amazing if you don't have it. GET IT!

Accessible first person shooter. 65%
dfle311 October 2012
Platform: PS3

Setting: Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East etc.

Story: You're part of the military elite (S.A.S.) and fighting terrorists determined to get nuclear weapons.

Graphics: Good.

Sound: Good.

General observations:

Not being a lover of first person shooters, I thought I'd give this massively popular franchise a burl. It's the first in the series with a focus on contemporary warfare and can be had for a bargain nowadays. The controls are intuitive and the gameplay is generally accessible. To be honest, I started playing this game after I rage/bored quitting Metal Gear Solid 4, but dropped it when I conquered a hard part of MGS4. It was only after completing MGS4 multiple times that I got around to finishing this game. The story wasn't particularly engaging and seems pretty much geared towards funnelling you into online play...just teaching you the basics of the gameplay. That was fine by me. I didn't try out the online component and aren't sure if it's still available. Also, I played this game on "Rookie" level...but I completed the "Mile high" mission on the Normal difficulty, so I'm sure I could play on the harder difficulty levels (I played on the hardest difficulty level of MGS4 eventually).

The Health system of the game is like that found in the Uncharted games...if you get shot, you take cover for a while to recover full health. You can run, crouch run and crawl in the game. There are multiple weapons to use, including high tech ones.

Good about the game:

The training module at the start is brief and gives you a feel for the gameplay.

The controls are intuitive...even after I returned to the game after finishing MGS4, it was easy to pick up on the gameplay.

The game doesn't waste your time...you can skip the self-promotion slides at the start of the game and in game, if you die, you pretty much resume from where you died...so, generally you don't have to repeat slabs of levels, which I like.

I like how your squad waits for you...there are things to collect in the game (which I didn't really care about) and you can roam at your leisure to find them, then meet up with your squad and continue the action.

Variety of gameplay...sniper missions, helicopter gunships, missile launches etc.

The final moments of the game were cinematic and effective (before the "mile high" mission).

Your squad commander looks like Lemmy Kilmister! You can replay levels/Acts after you complete them. So, if you enjoyed some of the unconvetional parts of the game, like shooting big guns from a helicopter using thermal vision, you can replay that again.

Bad about the game:

Very occasionally you can get lost in the game, not sure what to do next...e.g. in an early sniping mission your commander tells you to come "over here" to snipe...where is "here"? Just no cues to help you there. Only once did I have to go online to find out how to progress the game...for the detonation by the tavern section. I really had no idea what was expected of me and what to do. To not waste a bucket load of time, I just searched online as to how progress the game at this point. This lack of clarity on what you are meant to do can be tedious. The game could explain things to you better in this regard. A similar thing happened with the missile code section of the game, but I managed to locate the right place to do what you were meant to do...it's only clear where you're meant to be if you know where to look! This section was timed, so it could be frustrating if you timed out.

The enemy animations are a mixed bag...I like how you could hurt them yet they still posed a believable threat to you when injured. Not so good was how at other times they miraculously recovered from being shot at and carried on as normal...the equivalent to your ability to recover full health when injured.

Maybe once you had to repeat game play from before you died, which wasn't ideal...I preferred respawning from where I died. I had actually saved from a certain point, but when I couldn't complete my objective the game sent me back to before the point I saved.

For the end game play, on the truck ride, I found it hard knowing what to do...i.e. who the enemy was and being able to target them effectively.

Conclusion:

Once you complete the game you unlock Arcade mode and Hints as well. Didn't replay the game as I want to play Uncharted 3 now. But I did briefly play the "mile high" mission in Arcade mode. That looks like a quick and easy option if you want a short FPS fix if you don't have much time.

The single player campaign is a good introduction to this genre and you can easily learn the ropes here until you feel ready to tackle what this game was no doubt intended for...online play...where you can expect to be pwned and teabagged by 11 year old boys! Recommendations: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This game is all about the story. It is in 3rd person view but you can play it like a FPS I'm sure...maybe for most of the game? Bioshock: I don't consider myself a FPS aficionado but this game really grabbed me...I'd call it FPS for people who aren't into FPS! Has sort of magical abilities as part of your weaponry.

I'm considering maybe giving the Black Ops sequel a burl, once it price comes down...it seems a futuristic kind of game, which might make it interesting for me.

This game is quite mediocre. It does not deserve the hyped reviews.
BudgetSecurityGames1 January 2016
Disclaimer: Single-player only. If your a CoD fanboy, this review is not for you, just vote it down without reading, and move on.

I normally play more realistic or story focused shooters, but with most CoD fans saying this is the best one in the series, I thought I'd try it (single-player) with modest expectations. It was still a mild disappointment. Production values were fairly mediocre, not what I was expecting from a highly praised big-budget game.

Graphics are OK, but nothing special, even for 2007 (inferior to Arma1, Stalker1 and Crysis which all came out the same year). Some level environments are quite nice, but most others are fairly bland and a bit too linear. Sound design is also nothing special, and lacks oomph.

The story is OK, but the missions are a very mixed bag. Almost all of them suffer from rinse-and-repeat enemy AI waves. Its all scripted, and seems to be aimed at instant gratification console peasants of below average intelligence. The US infantry missions are just a tedious shooting gallery with a shallow narrative tacked on. No matter what instructions you get from your officer, chances are they are not practical for the situation in front of you. If you deviate from the script even slightly, like attempting to flank where your not supposed to, the mission gets stuck or you get punished. At least there are a few missions with more interesting mechanics (like firing canons from a plane). The only decent conventional mission was "All gullied up" - much more atmospheric and better paced. If only the other missions were as good. You only get to do a (highly scripted) sniper shot once in the game, and only at about 150m. The campaign is quite short at 4-8 hours. The only really good thing was the few jokes your squad make now and then.

Open combat mechanics are not fun - arcade and bland. Almost every time you shoot an enemy a new one spawns right behind him, just around a corner. This creates the ludicrous consideration where you may not want to bother shooting someone to avoid dealing with the near infinite replacement enemy spawns. Weapons look nice and have great reload animations, but lack realistic power. Quite a few times the AI would ignore a bullet to the head or multiple rifle shots in the chest. Certain enemies are immune to damage if they are not "supposed" to die at that time - eg: hit a helicopter with anti-tank RPG and nothing happens. This punishes any player initiative. Enemies move without inertia. This makes aiming at them a pain. The AI will tend to just run at you mindlessly. Enemies throw grenades with machine-like accuracy and occasionally seem to be able to track your movement through walls. during training you are instructed to shoot through weak cover, but I encountered many weak surfaces that seemed to be just as effective as concrete. Friendlies are either invincible bullet sponges or get in your way (example: grenade falls at your feet and AI is blocking the only door exit).

Overall CoD4 is a fairly mediocre game (but not quite "bad"). How this became the No.1 FPS franchise seems to have little to do with merit.

Best war game i have played
ged_white7219 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I have played a few war games like MOH, BHD and JO but none of the previous COD's. But this one looked interesting so i looked up videos of it on you tube to see the game play and it was awesome. I really loved the graphics on it. I hear if you play it on HD TV it looks real. I have it on PC and it looks awesome i cant wait to get Xbox 360 and find out for myself. I completed the Single Player fairly quick on regular. I always do and individual mission if i feel like it on veteran but otherwise i play on a server called SMART MIX IT and its a mix of the different types of games you can play. My favourite is Search and Destroy because once your dead thats it no re spawning. But other games you get more kills and earn UAV when you get 3 kills in a row, Airstrike for 5 kills and a chopper for 7 kills. The chopper is good because you can get 7+ kills and call in another. The guns are amazing and you can get ranked. The top level is 55 and its called commander. Im on commander and now I'm trying to complete all challenges. Here are some examples of the challenges but i don't remember the XP you get.

Goodbye-Jump 30 feet and die.

No Secrets-Call in a UAV 3 times in a single match.

Backdraft-3 stages but to complete all you have to destroy 15 explosive devices.

Hard Landing-Kill someone when the in mid air.

Airstike Inbound-Same as chopper in bound just kill 5 or 7 people and call in the air support.

They are just some examples so go buy it now if you haven't already.
