After the lackluster finale of Titans second season I asked myself how the writers and producers would redeem themselves and changing the city from San Francisco to Gotham City was a great way, at least for me who love the characters centered around the crime infested city. It's also the logical next step for the show to take in how Dick Grayson have been the character Titans centers around. It's also the home of Bruce Wayne, Barbara Gordon, Jason Todd and other heroes and villains. The writers and producers also fixed something, the humor but don't get me wrong, the show is still dark and mature, exactly how I like it to be. The Titans actually work as a team now and using their powers, Dick Grayson finally took on the name and suit Nightwing in the S2 finale, it's quite brilliant seeing Brenton Thwaites in the Nightwing suit, from the first episode I always had a good feeling about him as Grayson and seeing him now as Nightwing was simply fantastic. His performance continue to amaze me. Carol Banker's direction was great and I'll say the same to the writing, the dialogue were well written and sharp, overall an improvement. Remarkable cinematography, the camera work and the visual storytelling was so good. There's so many details and hidden Easter eggs in the shots. I think the sets were brilliant in this episode, the bat cave being my favorite. There were mostly only small fight sequences, but they were choreographed well and entertaining to watch.
The line up haven't changed, Titans still has Dick Grayson as the leader and the other members are Hawk and Dove, Starfire, Rachel Roth, Gar Logan, Conner Kent and Jason Todd. Donna Troy died in the S2 finale but I'm sure she will return as Rachel looked for a way for just that in the season finale. The big bad of the season will surely be Blackfire which Damaris Lewis is playing, returning from her guest appearance in the second season. Newly additions are Vincent Kartheiser as Dr. Jonathan Crane, an actor who played a big role in Mad Men, I believe hundred percent that he will be perfect as The Scarecrow. Savannah Welch plays Barbara Gordon, it's another superb casting. Savannah being a paralyzed as well and just having the look of Barbara, plus the talent.
Summary: I think the slow pacing isn't for everyone but my love for the characters and the Batman mythology kept me interested through the whole 42 minutes. The episode follows Dick Grayson as he goes to Gotham City, it's such a well written episode and it shows how much he have changed throughout these two seasons. Iain Glen's performance as Bruce Wayne is probably the episode's best, it isn't often I say this but that was a terrifying performance, award worthy. The conversations between Dick, Bruce and Barbara were also some of my favorite parts of the episode. Titans is off to a great start with its third season, first at HBO Max. I want to comment on something and I'll have to start off that I'm a big Batman fan, Tim Drake is sadly unrecognizable because of how they changed the ethnicity of the character, a beloved character in the comic books and the actor doesn't look at him at all which disappointed me. This is me criticizing their choice, but I have faith that it will be a good portrayal and that the actor will do a fine job.
