Excellent episode
dryad-720 November 2021
I've read all the books, love them. Glad to see the same character elements shine through in the show. Happy to see that the show embraces the nature of the many nations and people of the books. I had quite a few laughs from Mat's smart a&* remarks and Nynaeve's bravery and ferocity. Looking forward to the rest of the episodes!

So many things I loved in the first episode!
svartkattihatt20 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I got more and more excited the longer I watched this episode, so many things to love! I love that Wheel of Time finally is on TV!

I read some spoilers before I watched and was nervous, but the changes bother me very little and a lot of them I actually like!

The casting was excellent and I want to especially mention Padan Fain- just excellent, even just in that short scene.

Moraine and Lan in the bathtub- for some reason Lan making Moiraine heat up the water really made me laugh. I also feel like it portrays their relationship- they are so close that bathing together is no big deal and not a sexual thing at all.

The things that I didn't fully buy or like, was the portrayal of Moiraine using her powers- was is this, an aerobics class? I'm less fine with Egwene and Rand having sex in the kitchen of the inn. Especially that they did it in a public place like that? It's a no for me.

A thoughtful measured take with highs and lows
jmmitchell-4898521 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As so many people seem bent on judging this show based on adaptation changes and being "woke" I am putting both of those aside and rating based on what I saw. Overall this episode to me improves on the others. It takes a slower pace and let's us sit more with the characters. I especially enjoyed following Rand and Matt. Their journey was the highlight for me with this episode. Outside or the nightmare I found Egwene and Perrin's journey a bit slow and boring. Finally it was cool seeing the Wisdom return and I can't wait to see you what this man in a cage is all about. I give it a soft 8/10.

So detailed and laying character traits while leading towards some amazing storylines! This is an excellent episode. As the focus continues with the Two Rivers being left further and further behind. Really enjoyed every second and we get introduced to new fun groups!

Great adaptation
jlmcgirk21 November 2021
I've recently read all the books again and I find this to be a great segue to television for the intensity of this material. I love that some of the later concepts are woven into these early episodes and am really looking forward to seeing how the story unravels. I'd love to see the nay-sayers write, produce and even execute something of this magnitude themselves in any close proximity.

My fave episode so far.
aarongallagher119 November 2021
Nynaeve is a bad ass at the start.

Thom is better cast than I imagined.

Tinkers..... unsure for now.

Already hate Liandrin.

Worst thing about episode 3 is the wait for episode 4.

The Greed of Amazon
spasek24 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The greed and cheapness of Jeff Bezos (one of the greediest men on the planet) is primed to ruin one of the best fantasy series ever written.

Of the three episodes, this one is the weakest. The show is slowly beginning to get a "CW" feel. In other words: cheap. Whoever sold the rights to Amazon must have been a moron. Amazon is no better than most networks. Cheap budget with many constraints. And the only 1-hour long episodes is destroying the pacing of the series. Everything feels rushed and forced, and it's very evident in this episode.

The story has already leaped through nearly half the book in only three hours time. You can imagine how much story, plot, and characterization has been lost. I don't mind liberties (as long as they stick to the story and characters) but moving at lightning pace is sapping the life out of the series. An entire season should be devoted to a single book, although I'm hearing that at least the first 2-3 books will be covered. God, I hope that's wrong! Otherwise, we're merely getting a very skeletonized version of the 14-book story arc. Again, I am not expecting them to cover everything, but I am expecting them to stick with the meat of the story and to bring us enriching charactesr. They're failing miserably if this episode is any indication.

We now have the three separated groups. Nynaeve is captured and tied to a tree by Lan, who needs her to try and heal the wounded Moiraine (she was never wounded in the book).

Egwene and Perrin find themselves running from a pack of wolves (we have no Elyas to explain the wolves or Perrin's connection to them). If you haven't the books, you would likely find this laughable.

And finally, we have Mat and Rand in a small town trying to find shelter when we finally meet Thom Merrilin. In an almost ludicrous handling of the final plotline of the episode, we have a Darkfriend who tries to hold Rand captive. I laughed (not in a good way) as Rand repeatedly slammed himself into a door while the Darkfriend simply stands and watches. Whoever wrote this episode must not have even passed Screenwriting 101.

God, how I wish we'd have had Netflix or HBO or some other studio behind this project. Amazon is easily destroying the series, and we're only three episodes in. The CGI, at times, is very cheaply done (ala CW style!). But as I said, the real tragedy is how much the first book has been butchered.

I'm hoping and praying that things will improve. However, as of right now, I am not hopeful.

Good episode that gets draws you in
bioidentix21 November 2021
I don't get the bad reviews. It's all people who are looking essentially for a direct translation of the books. They are comparing very specific things to the text and then going SEE! They changed something, omg they changed a characters beard! I wonder if they even realize how silly a criticism like that is.

Uh you kind of have to if you want to do a TV adaptation. Direct adherence just doesn't work and they know it.

The show is very good to excellent. Production values and acting are top notch. I was worried I'd see cringy effects but it's quite good.

I read one review where he is looking for the dialog in old english... Seriously? Game of Thrones didn't do that.

First 3 episodes did a great job of peaking my interest. This seems to be true for most people looking at the imdb rating except for the highly triggered.

A strange mix of genres
pabrimel20 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I like chorizo and I like chocolate, but I don't eat a chorizo sandwich with chocolate. This TV series mixes too many generic aspects and combines them to spit them out in a really decaffeinated tapestry.

The technical side is fine overall and the combination of CGI and makeup (for the fantastic beings that appear) are pretty good. In fact, for a TV series it seems to me that it has a more than acceptable level, without being those of a movie with a much bigger budget. The magical effects are quite well done.

The story in general, as well as the characters, don't convince me and the presentation of the relationships between them is too forced. Of course, the homosexual allusions between young boys do not seem to me to fit at all with this kind of stories with a medieval background. It is normal that a waitress of the XXI century can confuse two friends with a couple of gay men, but in this context of the series is extremely forced.

I also find it an insult to compare this series to a mix between 'Game of Thrones' and 'Lord of the Rings'. It is a far cry from either of the two, and not only in the themes it deals with, but also in the way it presents everything. While the former is clearly a political and family power struggle (something that does not exist here), the latter has something fundamental that this TV show lacks: an adventure with characters that interrelate and seek to complete a fundamental mission that will change the course of history, while presenting a clear and lethal antagonist.

The combination of chorizo and chocolate is not working out very well for them, even having hired the Professor from La Casa de Papel. We will see what plans there will be in the future.

A compelling beginning with much to look forward to
TygrKat22 November 2021
*Episode 3: 8.5/10*

Overall, episode 3 is very good. The story and character/relationship development are moving along at a good pace. Questions are asked and answered, and mysteries are made deeper. This episode feels very different from the first two, likely thanks to a different director but also due to the ensemble splitting up. The interactions between characters feel more meaningful and real, especially compared to episode 1. While episode 2 felt like a step up in quality from the pilot, this one feels like a different flavour with the same level of quality, if not still better.

The third episode follows the seven current main characters, split into three groups, through three very different landscapes and settings as they try to head in a similar direction to (hopefully) regroup in a later episode. A new group of people is introduced after a confusing sequence which takes up a little too much time. Fortunately, the confusion is cleared up by the end of it, but not entirely resolved in this episode. Tensions of two different flavours are brought up between some of the main characters, and both interactions are effective. Two new characters treat the viewer with fantastic performances and offer some wonderful world-building and lore details.

Highlights include the two excellent new characters (both found in the same location), good chemistry developing between characters, and the final scene which promises big things to come in the near future. Negatives in this episode are few; however, the one stand-out is the aforementioned confusing and 'just-a-bit-too-long' scene, which had the effect of feeling silly and unrealistic until the "aha" moment is delivered at the end.

The Breaking of the Fellowship
shawneuser4 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The WoT did the multiple POV story style way before GoT came around and this episode is where it all starts as the company has been broken into 3 separate parts.

Unfortunately, in this case, not all three parts are equal. I only found the thread with Rand and Matt to be interesting.

The thread with Perrin and Egwene feels the most similar to that plot-thread in the book and it is well acted. Still, not much happens, and if you haven't read the books and don't know Perrin's connection to the wolves, then it would really be a mystery. Eventually they run into the Tinkers. OK. Of all the plot points in the book that could have been skipped, the Tinkers would be near the top.

The thread with Lan, Nynaeve and the ailing Moiraine feels the least like the book as it should since it was created out of whole cloth. Again, it is well-acted. So much so that I am starting to come around on Zoe Robbins as Nynaeve. The young little Wisdom killing a Trolloc by herself? Yeah, about the only thing this character has in common with the book character is the arrogance and anger. Still, Lan is excellent and the two actors are actually starting to show more chemistry together than the book characters had. (Terrible couple in the books, among others, that made little sense to me.) Lan almost makes Nynaeve likable.

Rand and Matt were excellent casting choices and are convincing as long time friends. Matt's character is darker here than in the books, but we all know how popular the anti-hero is. Rand is probably the character in the show that is most true to his book self, and that is a damn good character to get right. He is level-headed, humble and a problem solver. The ladies like him, of course.

Thom Merrilin is finally introduced here, and he is much darker, and younger, than the character in the books. I might be in the minority, but I like it. I always found everything Thom does in the books, while being a really old guy, to be a little hard to believe. This guy actually looks capable of fighting a Fade. He and Matt are a natural fit.

Once again we have a diverse character in the middle of a very diverse village waxing on about how no one ever gets to go anywhere. Yeah, that makes zero sense, but it doesn't really bother me. I'm over it. Regardless, even though this was the best thread of the episode, the ending was preposterous. Matt and Rand could easily just outrun Dana. She had no chance of keeping up with them. Still, this was the thread that kept this episode at least on par with the first episode.

Definitely a step back here from the better second episode. Still, there are some good things going on. I'm looking forward to seeing Logain.

Disappointing
jan-bauer21 November 2021
I´ve read the first book of the series somewhere in 1991. The big difference between the wheel of time series and all other fantasybooks was that the female characters were strong and important. At that time, fantasy book I think were largely a male domain and thus it was extremely interesting too read a book where the female characters were as important as the male characters. Importantly, the dialogues between Rand and Egwene were sometimes very funny and thus besides the exciting story, there also were pointa where you could laugh.

I´m now in the third episode of the series and I´m really disappointed. So many things that are simply wrong. The dialogues are terrible, the acting is mostly terrible. The characters don´t remind me of the characters in the book, except for Perrin which I think is well-casted. Pike is OK as Moraine, Thom Merrelin also is OK. Although Daniel Henney gives a good performance as Lan, although I would have liked a heavier Warden (more like the hound in GOT, but also faster and deadlier. Some other reviewers also mentioned this before, but it is ofcourse strange that in an "inbred" village far away from the big cities, all the people have different etnicities. In case of the traveling tinkers this is what could be expected. The CGI is much less than what would be expected from such an expensive series. The trollocs look terrible compared to the orcs in the LOTR which was filmed 20 years ago. Maybe the acting gets better, maybe I´ll get used to the characters, but overall, until now it´s a dissapointing show which probably doesn´t get better because the writing simply will stay at this level.

A place of safety for some, but not all
rodrigo-8386423 November 2021
Perrin's connection with the wolves is one of my favorite aspects in the books. I will hold my judgment for now until I know for sure how it will be handled but so far, given the restraints of budgets and television logistics, I think the introduction has been done very well. Hopefully we get to see more of them in future episodes. On that note, I can't help but continue to feel saddened for Perrin as almost every scene he has relates to his tragedy in the pilot in a realistic way. A testament to the strength of the writers of the tv adaption as the changes made to Perrin's backstory are still being felt two episodes on. In a good way. My watch party all feel the same.

Nynaeve is as ruthless as ever as she should be! Zoe is doing an amazing job thus far with her portrayal of the no non-sense wisdom of the Two Rivers. Nynaeve and Lan's chemistry is also evident from the start as the latter begins to show intrigue and unspoken admiration for the former.

Rand and Mat really do feel like childhood friends thanks to the grounded, semi-modern dialogue that has proven to be a great choice. Relatable straight talk in favour of flowery prose which helps what little dialogue there is feel very relatable. The books are the same for the most part so I'm happy they continued with that trend.

The story in Breen Springs is an amalgamation of the Four Kings and Baerlon threads in the book and once again, I can't really complain. Sets up the darkfriends as the human component of evil which I thought was done very well thanks to the great performance by the actor who portrayed Dana, the double-dealing, empathetic and entirely too skinny Inn-keeper.

Thom's decidedly darker approach was great. Felt and sounded like Thom while leaning further towards his og gangster side hinted at in the books. Thom's scenes with Mat, Rand's witty response to Dana's insinuation that he and Mat might be more than just friends, the introduction of Tinkers, Perrin's overprotectiveness, and our first look at an Aiel all make this another excellent episode.

Ripper episode that I'd forgotten from the books
jamesyoung-2434226 November 2021
The intro of Thom brought shivers down my spine at the adaptation of such an important character for TV. It's been done absolutely perfectly to meet the desires of the broad audience and needs of us dedicated readers.

Seriously what's not to love about this show? It captures the important plot lines (albeit adapted as needed) and even some parts I thought inconsequential (ie the Darkfriend from the Inn).

THANKS RAFE!

Perrin sucks. Lan is good. Rand is great.
Lory10_0129 November 2021
1) Perrin part sucks, because it's boring and what we've seen of the wolves at almost mid-season it's not very charming, meaning they'll possibily rush it out (I hope not). I still don't like Egwene's actress;

2) Lan and Nyanaeve were good. Nothing special, but we start to see some build up for the characters and their relationships, which is very good;

3) Nynaeve first scene is badass as hell. Everyone screaming at "girl power", no, that's just a girl defending herself. Nynaeve is always badass, don't forget that!;

4) Rand and Mat are great. Their friendship feels solid, Breen's Spring is amazing (they built the town from scratch!).

The highlight of this plot branch are Thom (totally different from books, but far, far better than the books, and "the man who can't forget" is a great foreshadowing) and Dana, which never appeared in the books either, but feels much better than any Dark Friend Jordan ever wrote: her motivation is believable and adds some depth to the Dark Friends. In the books, all of them follow the Dark One because they want power, she has a deeper reason, and I respect her for that.

All in all, it would be a 7.5, because Perrin is boring and Lan and Nynaeve were good but not excellent, but the 8 is due to the improvement in pacing and storytelling, dialogues and character developement.

I enjoyed the changes - as a book fan
marleymcurtis18 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At the end of episode 1 when it appeared Nynaeve had died, I turned to my husband and said I would stop watching it if she didn't make an appearance in episode 2. Well... she didn't. He convinced me to give episode 3 a shot and finally, here she is! Her disappearance didn't happen in the books and in my opinion wasn't needed here, but I did like the water-cave scene and I think it covers a lot of ground in character development for her as well as her relationship development with Lan. Overall, well executed. It's hard to take a leath of faith with the show producers when I, as a book reader, know exactly what they're skipping over. But so far the "deleted scenes" have been appropriately replaced or turned up in unexpected places in later episodes.

Mostly what I expected
theguru-7122120 November 2021
When I heard this wonderful book series was being brought to "life", I was both excited and worried since every single series based on beloved books the past few years have been....lacking, and modernized to be more "diverse" and "inclusive" than the books I read growing up. I'm not sure why they can't seem to follow the books that were SO successful, and instead have to change and add things to fit their world view. Saying that, it was done less than I had feared, but it is still there and takes me out of the story when it happens, ruining what could have been a wonderful experience.

At this point I will continue watching, but if they keep adding more each episode I suspect I will stop watching because I won't be as engaged as I was when reading the books.

Solid episode
saphira-2845426 November 2021
I'm still not a fan of some of the changes (especially when it comes to Perrin) but it's overall a good episode. I really like what they're doing with the musical moments from the books. But I can't give it a higher score than 7 even if I'm judging it outside of the books because it feels a bit lacking, this episode felt less exciting than the last one and the acting still needs polishing. Most of all, this show is still in need of some passion and something unique in the presentation to stand out as a fantasy show.

The stakes keep climbing and danger is around every corner. A mysterious musician, a friendly (maybe) caravan of travelers, a talkative barmaid, and an angry medicine woman - will our cast find help or harm in this ever-expanding world? Not everything is as it seems...

That's not how roads work😂
rajrrvk21 November 2021
That's the most sense the show has made so far,all it's doing is saying lore and stuff, the characters shouldn't act like this, they aren't asking anything and just going with whatever the adults say to them, they don't ask why or how or anything. I haven't read the books but that's not how humans behave, that just totally disconnected me from the show. They say old language and just expect the audience to feel like that, but the thing feels off The show had potential,if they redo it,if they reset the characters and start with character creation again this concept can work. This show will work as Disney and Netflix and such have showed how just visuals and book adaptions just work. They won't be able to leave a mark but it'll work.

No Animals Were Harmed In The Making Of This.....
wandernn1-81-68327425 November 2021
Robert Jordan probably wouldn't care for how this is progressing thus far. We start off here and trollocs have got Nynaeve and she gets to run off while they are eating each other. She hides in the water. Trollocs dont particularly care for water. LOL, Nynaeve is a beast! Takes down that Trolloc!

Okay I guess I will just have to get used to it. This is not the books. This is some crudite adaptation. Guess we'll see how it goes. -1 Star to start this one....

I like the opening sequence. That's starting to grow on me.

So this ep. Everyone is divided up already. Perrin and Egwene being chased by wolves. Mat and Rand off to town to hear a song.

So we get a little of Thom Merrilyn. We get a little glimpse of Logain at the end. +1 Star for this ep. 5/10.

Heading in the right direction.
marcottejgmm14 December 2021
All three plots are interesting and well sustained as the suspense remains.

The actors are becoming more comfortable in their roles and some are even impressive already (take a bow Rosamund, Daniel and Barney:)

A promising future to a formidable book series.

Darn, getting better and better
moviesfilmsreviewsinc26 December 2021
The Wheel Of Time is one of those shows that starts out a bit slow and shaky but gets better over time. That's not to say that by episodes 3 and 4 the show is perfect. There are still some things that rub me wrong, like a general sense that everything inexplicably feels low-budget largely thanks to the way the show is shot. But there's no denying that things get better with each episode, and that really episodes 2 - 4 are all pretty strong and engaging. It's a shame the first episode is a bit of a clunker, but once you get past it the show is much more enjoyable. After two episodes of running around, switfly moving from one place to another in their bid to get to the White Tower as quickly as possible, The Wheel of Time finally takes things slow. As a consequence of the previous episode's climax, Episode 3 sees the ensemble cast trope come into play as the writers split the core group into three. The focus also shifts from adventure to drama as characters interacting and sharing smaller tales replace the big set-pieces and epic battles that were forcefully being thrust without any build-up. The end result is an episode that's a remarkable improvement over the first two and is starting to look more like the kind of show The Wheel of Time should be throughout its run. Mat is in general tired of all the running around and he wants nothing more than to get back to his family, more so his sisters. He especially fears for them seeing what kind of parents he has and doesn't necessarily buy into the "Dragon Reborn" stuff. Rand though, has come around at a fascinating pace, after lashing out in the previous episode; he's now the one nudging both of them to move towards their destination. That's a bit of a flip-flop seeing as it was Mat nudging Rand to carry on with their mission but looks like this new dynamic is what's here to stick. The episode ends rather excitingly as Logain Ablar makes his debut as another player in the mix, someone claiming to be the Dragon Reborn. Despite my unfamiliarity with the books, this is something I'm really excited to see play out. Logain is likely a major player and it will be interesting to see how his presence challenges and threatens the actual Dragon Reborn's position in the eyes of the Aes Sedai. This has definitely been a step up compared to previous episodes and has me more excited to jump into the next one.
