. . . it is so Pure, as in Pure Evil. IT ONLY HURTS WHEN THEY LAUGH is one of the most contentious films ever made. It glorifies violence for violence's sake. Doubtless Quentin used it as a template for his KILL BILL's, RESERVOIR DOGS, HATEFUL EIGHT, GRIND-HOUSES, PULP FICTION, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD and other homages to bloody mayhem. But minute-for-minute, HURTS wins the cheesecake. Everyone knows that boxing is very monotonous, as are barroom brawls. HURTS c-a-r-i-c-a-t-u-r-i-z-e-s this sort of monotony, presenting its slug fest unabashedly devoid of any artistic pretense. This cartoon is as ugly as a cauliflower ear, epitomizing the banality of blood.
