This episode shows that Steven is still a very flawed character who is still trying to adjust to the changes going on in his life. As teens we go through that kind of struggle (heck even as ADULTS we go through that struggle). Steven is facing many stressful situations only topped off by the graduation in the previous episode and his best friends saying goodbye. He is also still overcoming the guilt he feels from his mom's actions.
Simply put: His character still has a long way to go and I can feel his pain as he goes through this struggle. I think this was a very strong, yet sad episode.
