Not the book, but good

In the book, it is Uhtred's idea to make a nominal conversion to get power.

And here and earlier, we see things from the viewpoint of people other than Uhtred.

I find it all very positive, though.

History!

Ok I'm seeing a lot of reviews here that are bashing Aethelflaed and her role in this. Do not forget that Aethelfaed did become Lady of the Mercians in history. And for the same reason! Her popularity. After the death of Aethelfed, Lady Aethelflaed became the official ruler because of her popularity with the Mercians as she had already proved herself to be a leader. In real history, Aethelred ruled in stead of Aethelred when his health declined several years before his death. The people, seeking stability saw this in her and were very content in having her continue to be their ruler. Aethelflaed's behavior makes sense in this episode. And obviously I know this show is only historically accurate in the main events but still.

The worst episode of the entire series

This episode went a bit far with current social issues, so far that it took away from the series and had me thinking of the downturn in the History Channel's show Vikings.

I love Last Kingdom, and it does get back on track after this episode.

An episode full of decisions but with little depth in the dialogues.

A lot of things happened in this episode, maybe it was too much for 50 minutes.

Meh

Historically the Welsh absolutely dominated their encounters with the vikings, no Welsh leader fell at the hand of a viking, let alone Hywel Dda. Why can't anyone in film give Wales it's due these days?? You rob us of Arthur and continue to rewrite our history.

Too much minutiae
Calicodreamin17 November 2021
Way too much going on and waffling back and forth with too easy of resolutions in the end. The politics have taken over and it's not for the betterment of the series.

The lowest point of the show

Season 4 has been a bit of a mixed bag. It started well, with attention seemingly shifting to Uhtred's aim to reclaim Bebbanburg. That had been a long time coming as it was always a matter of unfinished business for Uhtred but the broader plot seemed to be going in a direction where this wasn't going to happen. It didn't feature at all in Season 3 and it felt like Uhtred had given up on that goal.

Then in Episodes 2 and 3 we had the failed attempt to retake Bebbanburg and we were back to Saxon vs Dane manoeuvring. Episode 4 felt like a season closer it was so tense, action-packed and conclusive. By the end of that episode several long-term characters - Father Beocca, Cnut, Steapa, Aelfric - were now ex-characters and another, Aethelred, was soon to be added to that list, truly given the feel of the end of season.

The show then pivoted to Mercian (and Wessexian) politics which was interesting at times but also quite frustrating in that it seemed like the plot was just going in circles.

Then, just when it seems we have a way out of it, a way involving our hero Uhtred, we have this episode which, while it does untangle the Mercian political web, feels very clumsy and disappointing. It all just seems like machinations for machinations' sake and I really would have preferred the result that the previous episode was promising (though also wanted Aethelflaed to have some sort of power).

At least this political tangent seems resolved now so we can get back to what this show does best: Danes vs Saxons.

not just history rewrote

Hmm so when did Catholics start using the Eastern Orthodox Church way of making the sign of the cross, this show really is a joke at times, as yes I know they like to rewrite history a lot in it, but come on, to make such a basic error.

As for the episode, boring as hell and brida is just everything wrong with today's tv making.
