The final scene of this episode was one THE most magnificent things I've ever watched. The acting was so great. I will never forget both winslet and Peters in that scene whenever it comes to tense situations. I also loved how early in the episode they concentrated a bit on peters' character and revealed he is not that great of a cop and besides that still has childish behaviors (the kiss scene). Which all made sense of his death.

Great episode

This episode is what Emmy's are made of. Once in a while there are episodes of shows that when they end, you just sit there in silence and think about what just happened. I love it when that happens, and this was definitely one of those moments👌

Zabel was a naive and noob cop. That scene is not poorly done, he was just a cop with zero field skills. He even says that he didn't solve the other case, that dialogue is there to reinforce how that character is not the best cop, and the way he kisses Mare like a school boy. He died because he was still a puppy in the field against a prepared and hostile villain. The girls not screaming was a little bit weird tho but i think if they had done so we would have the same outcome and possibly Mare as part of the casualties too. So maybe the girls didn't scream to give whoever was there a chance, they were subtly warning instead of blatantly giving it away thus risking all of the people who were there to help. So yeah, to the other reviewers who thought it was nonsensical, it makes perfect sense.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any interesting!

What an episode. Just terrific.
Honestly the first 20-25 mins were not great. I had a sinking feeling that this show has passed its peak. And the current and next two episodes are going to be pretty average. It starts usual. Theres more focus on each individual's personal stories during first half. However almost around 30 mins into the episode, plot thickens as Deacon confesses his meeting with Erin on the night of her murder. Also as Jesse finds something startling in Erin's journals.
Zabel and Mare do eventually seem to warm up to each other after the disastrous date.
Finally when you thought Zabel and Mare may have something going on, romantically. BAM.
Very well written. Performances were terrific.

Where to begin, what can i say .. Emmy's are waiting! Whole team has done a marvellous job. Deep inside we all wish that this could have been the next true detective season after rust chole and marty's journey.

Completely shocking but beautifully done. The potential for a truly healthy relationship between Colin and Mare was gracefully developed throughout the first 4 episodes, making the twist even more heartbreaking. The final scene was especially grim as we see Mare forming the parallel between footage of her son and yet another loss.
Great episode.

I just finished watching this episode and my heart is still pounding. My daughter and I sat there for a second when it ended and then she said, "we have to wait until Sunday!". Great episode. We are enjoying this series.
Here's the reason why this is a very different whodunit

Illusions. This episode proves that you can always count on HBO to deliver fresh and engaging content. If the last few episodes lacked speed, the makers sped this one 20x.
This episode is called Illusions for all the right reasons. It will leave you both with open questions and with a lot of answers. The fact that there are two more hours remaining in this show makes the viewers feel both excited and wonder.
This is the real turning point in the series. The slow train picked up pace moving at Godspeed. Whether it stops at a station or crashes, the viewers will have to wait and watch.
Mare. Godspeed.

This was so brutal! When they saw a packet of Winston's they they immediately knew it was him the strangler. Another prostitute helped them find him thanks to his old van. His dilapidated house with the bar next to it was as creepy as it gets. Mare didn't have a gun and Zabel got shot. Mare hid in the attic. It was so tense. She used Zabel's gun just before he got to shoot her. Zabel was lying in a pool of his own blood and I think he's dead. He had kissed Mare by that huge bridge which made everything more sad.
Just as good as the reviews say
ellenmd5323 May 2021
I very rarely write reviews. The exceptions are usually for the either very bad or as in this case, television of an exceptional nature.
Kate Winslet is simply brilliant. This isn't a case of actresses being lauded for a "unattractive" character. Her depth of performance is riveting. Multi layered. You dislike her lack of moral compass but then cry for the pain that drives her.
Evan Peter's is also giving a fabulously multifaceted approach to what could've been a cookie cutter role in support of a great female character.
Jean Smart is funny, as we expect of this long standing excellent supporting actor. But she lets you see her feeling of failure and seeking reception for her daughter's failures.
Supported by an exceptional script, directors, editing and set decoration.
And their dialect coach deserves an Emmy!

From the top...
So that old woman died in a car crash so we could have scene at a wake where the husband confesses to having an affair with Mare's mom, and Mare gets a good laugh. That's it, no plot relevance, just another bizarre detour visited and dropped.
The relationship between Zabel and Mare makes zero sense, there is less than zero chemistry and he (the actor, and let's assume the character too) is 12 years younger than Mare. The only reason this 'relationship' exists is so that when Zabel gets shot we care more.
And finally...why didn't the two girls upstairs SCREAM?! We know they would be heard since the kidnapper gagged them when visitors were over. But you see if they screamed the whole story comes to a dead stop and they arrest the guy. The pipe shaking was a contrivance to slooowly reveal what was on.
I'm still giving the overall series a 7/10, but that's mainly based on Kate Winslet's performance, which is excellent, and not the writing, which is poor.

As good as TV gets

This entire series is superb, but this episode will go down as one of those you will never forget. The rest of the series seems more predictable, but we'll see. But, this really came out of nowhere. And it rings true to how things really work in the world. I can't wait to see how the story proceeds.
WOW !!!

Warning: Spoilers
Agree with earlier review .... starts slow but more information is divulged in lead up to the explosive end. If Kate doesn't win an Emmy for this ... she will have been robbed.
SPOILER ... SOMEWHAT ..... Character Det Colin Zabel is listed on this site as being in 6 episodes. He was not in Ep 1 so he is in the remaining 6 episodes of this 7 part series. This doesn't necessarily mean he is alive though ... but I am thinking positive.

Not much more I can say right now other than "wow!" I don't think TV can do any better than that. Especially if you're like me, and haven't read the book. Total surprise. Or shock. This single episode deserves every award it can possibly get.
I'm not going to say anything more.

Absolutely the best crime thriller I've seen in a long time
cheryl-y-oconnor18 May 2021
I started this mini series after critics gave it good reviews of the first episode. I have been riveted ever since. First class acting from the cast, Winslet is outstanding but all supporting cast brilliant too. It feels very real, raw, emotional and tense. I think Kate should get an Emmy for this performance. Highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys the genre.
Wow
