Will Forte is hilarious!
Rob133129 September 2022
I loved the MacGruber movie and the skits for Saturday Night Live so I was really looking forward to this. It did not disappoint. Will Forte returns as the funny as hell MacGruber. He's as annoying as ever. You don't have to see the movie or skits to watch this but it helps because it takes place ten years after the movie. This is actually better than the movie and skits, more ridiculous but even funnier because of it. I can understand that this comedy isn't for everyone, it has an Austin Powers type comedy to it except more adult oriented. The supporting cast (Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, Sam Elliott, Laurence Fishborne, etc) is excellent as well. They all understand how absurd the show that they're making is and you can tell they're all having a blast making it.

Pretty Funny!
Supermanfan-1327 December 2022
MacGruber is just as funny as the movie. It's stupid funny so you'll need to turn off your brain. I don't understand the people who are leaving negative reviews...what were you expecting that you didn't get? I can see if you didn't know anything about the character and watched the movie blind but this movie isn't for those people. This is for fans of the character from the MacGruber movie and Saturday Night Live skit or of Will Forte. It's the perfect follow up to the movie. This is definitely for adults because it has foul language, nudity, violence, etc. Will Forte is as hilarious as he always is. He'll have you laughing out loud every episode. I'm hoping that they'll continue with more seasons because you can never have enough MacGruber.

Just great silly comedy.

Just like the film disengage your brain and have a great laugh and sillyness.

The people here rating it as low as they are obviously didn't watch the film or ever see the character before and went in expecting something very different. Although the credits should have prepared you. Lol.

Anyway just what I needed.

See the film to understand the series better.

This, like it's predecessor, is deliberate stupidity of the highest order. Take it seriously at your own peril. You'll either get it or you won't.

There's nothing wrong with you if you don't.

There might be if you do! Haha.

It's over the top, stupid, cringey and hilarious all rolled into one. It stays fairly faithful to its original movie chemistry.

Personally, I marvel at how much of a hilariously colossal dick-head Macgruber is. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Watch this with the same philosophy you'd watch NASCAR;

You really don't care who wins. You're more interested in seeing the results of someone else's abject stupidity.

I give it a 7 based on its faithfulness to its original.

But I understand why people score it way less.

MacGruber for the 21st century
hpvxqmvz16 December 2021
MacGruber is always a little f'D up, and this show a little more raw than the SNL skits! Escapism at least. I'm sure some nay-sayers will come along, but let them escape death as many times as MacGruber has - and most of the people around him haven't. 😄

Funnier than expected
travis-a-greene2 January 2022
I didn't care that it put its penis in my vagina as long as it also put its penis in my heart.

Haven't seen the movie. May have seen the SNL skit a couple times. Does a great job recapping the show in the beginning for viewers like me. It's incredibly stupid but in a good way and there are some big, big laughs. Worth checking out if you enjoy dumb humor like anchorman, bridesmaids, dumb and dumber, etc.

Will Forte bares all in a laugh out loud comedy
krazysoon17 December 2021
The comedy is over the top and the action is pretty wild. My wife and I laughed so hard at various scenes because a lot of it is just plain silly. I went into this with low expectations because of the film that was released in 2010 which was a box office bomb and disaster. The action is bigger and several of the jokes hit right on the spot. Now, I don't see a parents guide up yet but prepared to see some things you may not want to see.

Show had a lot of good laughs. Macgrubber is such a dumbass and I love it. Love how "checkers" just puts up with them two until the end. Not as funny as the movie but hes a fantastic charactor.

Half stupid-funny, half just stupid
FeastMode23 July 2023
I love the MacGruber movie. I watched it again before this series and it still cracks me up. So I was excited for this continuation. But as I watched, my excitement diminished. It's not terrible and it made me laugh a decent amount. It's just not nearly as funny or as good as the movie.

My guess for why this didn't work as well is the writing. Both the movie and the show go for stupid-funny humor. The movie does it cleverly, the dumbness feels intentional. The show, on the other hand, frequently feels unintentionally dumb. More like, "it doesn't matter if it makes no sense, people won't care."

If they make another season, I'll probably check it out in hopes that it's better. It's needed with how rare comedy movies/shows are these days. (1 viewing, 7/22/2023)

I don't think the other reviews saw the movie
dpeshl17 December 2021
Watch MacGruber, the movie, first. It will be your favorite comedy of the past 20 years. It's absolutely a brain dead fun comedy and the physical acting from Forte is hilarious.

The show picks up where the movie left off and keeps it just as crass as the movie and it's worth every moment. I'm beyond thrilled the tale of MacGruber continued.

"Ttuuuugggg??? Ttuuutttt? You guys okayyy??"

So immature and stupid you'll either laugh or turn it off
heftymartin28 December 2021
You will either love or hate MacGruber. Imagine all the best and worst insults from your childhood, all the most outrageous unbelievable lies you and your friends made up to impress each other or make excuses. Now imagine grown man using this as part of his repetoire.

I think you have to be a certain person to like this. I admit I normally like my humor either totally random and dark or in the form of intelligent satire. But sometimes there's this place in the middle where grown people can act like children, where the lines are so badly written - on purpose, where the level of stupidity is just ingenious, where you cringe and giggle all at once. Mc Gruber does this for me much like Team America did. I won't promise you like it, but I will promise you are missing out if you would, but didn't give it a shot.

Wanted to like it, but...
chefkellyanderson19 January 2022
It was just too over the top in every way. Bad writing, bad story. I love all of these actors and really wanted to be entertained but it failed.

And it didn't seem like it was made for episodic; instead it seems like they butchered up a B-rate feature film and sold it into episodes for consumption. I really REALLY wanted to like it. But it failed unfortunately. The SNL skits are way better.

Love it or hate it... No middle ground here
adamcomito20 December 2021
This tv series isn't for 95% of the population. Don't watch it with your significant other or your kids. If you loved the movie you'll probably laugh your ass off with this show. Enjoy it for what it is... An extension of a movie that's an extension of an SNL skit.

My review (... that I've only told to about 40 other people)
joejohn-821-88425121 December 2021
This followup to one of my favorite comedy movies of all time is LONG overdue! I'm pretty sure that they (Jorma Taccone and Will Forte) were going to make a sequel to the original film in movie-form years ago... in fact, I distinctly remember when they made an announcement about the MacGruber 2 movie script on Twitter, but I digress. My assumption is that movie sequel eventually somehow morphed into this TV show...

That said, MacGruber is back, baby! Look, I get it if some people don't like MacGruber; this brand/style of comedy is not for everyone. I really enjoy MacGruber and Will Forte's portrayal of the titular character. Heck, I've already watched this show in its entirety twice since its release just one week ago!

I really enjoyed this show. My only real complaint is that I just wish they had released it sooner.

Will Forte and co are hillarious....

Kristen Wiig is the key to make this work :D The opening sequence still made me laugh out lout three times...do better? This is so much fun, just keep making it. Similar to a Police Squad farce quality. Thanks.

Over the top and proud to be
okpilak16 January 2023
This is absurdity multiplied. And the casting is about perfect for what it wants to be. MacGruber has no clue how dumb he is, yet he keeps having success. And a great supporting cast. Yes, he is annoying (in spades), yet that is part of his endearing persona. It is clearly meant for adult audiences, with language and phrases like "hung like a butterfly, stings like a gnat." It may be a bit drawn out for the material, and they keep going from one idiotic situation to another. This is not comedy for everyone's tastes and sometimes gets a bit repetitious but it does flow along. If one likes their humor with a touch of grossness, they will like this series. And Will Forte holds nothing back in his role.

If you like the movie...
mike-bm-gm20 April 2022
If you like the movie, you'll probably at the very least enjoy most, if not all of the show. If you didn't see the movie, go watch it and decide if you want to watch the show. If you didn't like the movie then don't watch the show. Simple as that.

Couldn't get past the first episode
filmworld-731325 February 2022
I know, you're supposed to give shows at least a few episodes but it was clear that this one was going nowhere. The humor was very forced and just added through cussing and sex jokes, which can be funny but they just bombed it here. MacGruber on SNL was better.

A great series to follow the funniest movie ever
Sundevil197318 December 2021
Macgruber is one of the greatest characters in movie history. So it was genius to continue on his path. I'm not gonna spoil anything, but I'll just say that it's a 4 hr sequel to the funniest movie of all time.

Unfortunately, what made for a good film doesn't hold up over 8 episodes
Okonh0wp20 December 2021
The Saturday Night Live sketch was inexplicably turned into a hilarious movie with near cult culture status in 2010. The film approached gratuitous nudity and violence with such an over-the-topness that it reminds one of the hard-drinking college friend with no sense of shame.

Considering that the series has no boundaries over how low brow is the limit, there's no reason to worry about tarnishing the legacy of such a spectacularly stupid film. If you can mine any laughs at all out of it, I say go for it.

Still, I have to note: The series never reaches the comic plateau of the film. The comic energy works best when Will Forte's lunacy is juxtaposed alongside Ryan Phillipe's sensible soldier and love interest Kristen Wiig (the film starts out with her married to a general played by Lawrence Fishburne which is quite the obstacle). One problem is it takes at least three episodes to get the tree of them together and by then there's a significant loss in momentum. Will Forte's MacGruber is notably nastier here (I'm guessing it's a way to deepen the character and give him edge) and it's a lot less fun.

Even when operating on full cylinders, it still feels like the jokes per minute count is a little lower than the film. Perhaps, it's because of the way the plot is serialized and stretched out but not in a way that adds to the humor.

Last year, Erinn Hayes and Rob Huebel starred alongside Fred Melamed, Ken Marino, Jason Matzoukas and others in the Children's Hospital spin-off "Medical Police" that combined humor and action in a serialized manner in a much superior way.

Awesome!!! Picks up where the Movie left off
Always_green8618 December 2021
I really enjoyed the movie and the show didn't disappoint...Judging from the bad reviews I guess it's all based on a perception of Humor, if you like "Johnny English" Macgruber is in the same lane!! Kristin wig is Hilarious, Id definitely look forward to another one if possible, if not, this was a Great addition to the Movie.

Mindless Comedy
williamdarking-8150720 August 2022
I found the episodes to be entertaining and funny just like the movie. I enjoyed them. Each episode had its laughs. It's silly mindless comedy. Not for everyone. Either you like it or you don't. The only negative for me was the swearing. Way to much swearing. Especially the JC's and GD's. Is that really necessary? I would have given it a higher rating otherwise.
