Warning: Spoilers
I knew this was a drama about consent and sexual assault but the first episode took its merry time to get there.

Michaela Coel writes and stars as a millennial author Arabella writing a draft for her follow up book.

With a tight deadline she has writers block. Instead she visits her friends, goes partying and takes drugs.

The nest day Arabella visits her publishers but she is incoherent. She is hazy about what happened to her the night before, there is a small wound on her forehead which is weeping blood.

There is a loose memory of maybe being assaulting, that a drink may have been spiked.

I thought the first episode was muddled. It starts off in Italy with Arabella with someone who is her boyfriend. She then goes to London and is with some other men who she could be close to. It was all a bit too dizzying and bitty for me that failed to establish a narrative.

Maybe the structure was a deliberate choice by the director. Given that it deals with an important and sensitive subject matter, this could be a misfire based on the opening episode.

Incredible and engaging characterization and acting for this extraordinary mystery

Michaela Coel is clearly committed to telling an extremely involved and unfortunately relevant narrative that starts off with introducing us to relatable characters and situations, I know writers around the world at any level can feel for Arabella's procrastination. I fee confident the show knows what it's doing and that I'm in trustworthy hands which is all a premiere really needs to get across now isn't it? Unraveling the mysteries and uncovering more of these characters secrets and lies is shaping up to be lots of fun and I can't wait to put on the next greatly directed, exceptionally acted episode!
