Super colors and animation
mrbundeskhayal19 June 2020
I feel comfortable when I see such a beautiful animation ,this reminds me of Jojo bizarre adventure. The story is great but my only issue is that they make fraud easy which is not in reality

Nice
rdvljunk6 September 2020
It is a nice and sweet anime. The storylines remind of Ocean's 11 etc. The same kind of good guys that con a bad guy. Pretty basic and somewhat predictable stuff but absolutely fun to watch. What makes this anime special is de graphics style, that are uncommon for a japanese anime and reminded me of the artistic graphical novels from Cyril Pedrosa. It has a freshness in it that really fits the stories. That alone makes it worthwhile to watch

What is there to complain about??
mnasirdey20 November 2020
There's just so much to say...this anime is a perfect 10/10. The animation is absolutely stunning. Vibrant colors and so much rich and dynamic scenery. The voice acting (especially with the incorporation of so many different languages and accents) is among the very best I've ever heard. The characters, each and every one of them, are very likeable and have their own deep backgrounds and history, a lot of which relates to other characters you'd previously have no idea were connected. The soundtrack? Every episode is given life with jazz riffs, soft pop and an enthralling score, and its all capped off with a Freddie Mercury tune that I didn't skip a single time throughout the series. Now we get to the story itself. Quite literally the driving force behind the anime. Plot twist after plot twist. Surprise after surprise. Intensity that constantly has you on the age of your seat, and wondering what'll happen next. Only you never know and the reveal is bound to drop your jaw. Each and every question you may have will be answered with just the right amount of detail and explanation. After keeping you hooked for 21 episodes, the final 2 present themselves with an ending executed more perfect than anything I've seen in a very long time. It all comes full circle. All my questions answered, all my expectations shattered, everything I thought I knew completely out the window. And just when I thought I had seen it all, an end credits scene that floored me. I did not see any of this coming! I've been watching anime for several years, I'm actually coming up on my 100th anime watched. This one was something else entirely. To make it in my top 3 of all time is a statement in and of itself.

Great image with good stories
cbydeyouxiang4 July 2020
Though its title and theme are "pretenders", this anime is not really about fraud. In each case, the protagonists cheat the rich bad people and make society a better place. As the story unfolds, you will see that the main characters each has their own emotional background stories. They are just normal people who were helpless in this capitalist society that is full of fraud already, and decided to use this weapon against what once hurt them the most. This is an story about justice and love, told in the most stylish and warm way. A good combination of western culture and Japanese animes' profoundity.

Strongly deserves a third season
MoistMovies19 November 2020
The scene after the final credits.. So glad they left it open. Now that netflix has picked it up it has a much better chance at getting one more hopefully. I think that's all it needs.

Both the dub and sub are great. The animation is some of the best since the hand drawn days. The use of color is masterfully done. The story is simple and engaging. I grew to like most of the characters. Its a solid 8.5 series, but i voted a bit higher to off set some silly reviews. The first comedy adult anime I've enjoyed since the first season of OPM.. they dont come around often at all. Yet this is not close to as silly as OPM, dealing with some pretty heavy topics. But often the outcome isnt edgy or depressing. Which very hard to do i imagine when also writing it as a comedy that also isnt your typical 'black comedy' either.

It feels like its taken its influences from some of the best anime ever made like Bebop, baccano and GTO and made something of its own. To me, it feels original. But i can see how some might interpret that the opposite way. Different perspectives i suppose.

Give it a go i say.

Nice approach

I liked the first 4-5 Episodes very much but then it lost its power throughout the rest of the show. I liked the art and music style (Cowboy Bebop inspired themes were noticed)

Warning: Spoilers
Entertainment value: 8 Some scenes are really interesting and totally unpredictable.

Visuals: 8 I quite like the animation style

Soundtrack: 7 The outro is a great fit!

Plot: 7 The end might be a bit too meta tbh, and also, why the f did the preciously targets help in the end, makes no sense...

Characters and dialog: 7 Average dialog, the characters were all relatable in their own way. Total: 7,4

Excited at First. Let Down In The End
codycho-1708715 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had fun watching the first season of the show with it's interesting plot twists, characters, and the 3 cases they had. The 2nd season did the exact opposite with having a really drawn out case, characters not feeling like their first season selves especially Edamame, new one dimensional characters I don't care about, and really stupid choices in the story. A lot of it felt like they wanted to be Cowboy Bebop with scammers instead of bounty hunters. The intro, music choices, art style, and kinds of characters telling me that. Not that it's a bad thing as Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime at the moment. My biggest complaint is the ending. Why did they bring back the villains to help the confidence men when they were robbed of their money? When Laurent mentioned they broke even with the $100 billion dollars, I can't help but think a lot of that money went back to Eddie, Sam, and Coleman. Making the first season completely pointless. If the first season only existed, I'd give Great Pretender a 8/10. With the second season, I can't help give it a 6/10.

A fantastic first season destroyed by a terrible second season.
badcgishark18 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Loved the first three chapters (season 1), but the final chapter and second season was terrible. You can't keep fake killing people and expect there to be any sense of drama since we all know they will be ok. The child trafficking ring was horrific and was a terrible choice to add onto the series. It made every character look like monsters who allowed who knows how many children to suffer unspeakable horrors while they played their con game. Absolute awful ending for an otherwise good show.

Possibly Anime of the Year 2020 Contender?
wanderational23 September 2020
This anime is definitely the best anime of this year so far. Previously only available in +Ultra programming block of Fuji TV (same block with Beastars), but now it is coming to Netflix. Only 14 episodes released until now because it is imitating western series by having mid-season finale for the first half of the series.

The Cowboy Bebob's jazzy vibes and Catch Me If You Can's heist vibes feel really strong in this anime along with its opening theme song and title sequence. You must be really sure that this anime is truly good when they have Freddy Mercury of Queen for this anime ending song. Lastly, this is produced by Wit Studio who produced Attack on Titan Season 1-3 and Vinland Saga, what more can you expect?

Amazingly Entertaining!
rehana-s-kazi26 November 2020
The show was a 9/10. Then the newest 9 episodes came out on Netflix today and they were a 15/10. It's funny and endearing. You'll even cry. Some of the episodes get darker as you go as a warning. It's one of those things aren't always as they seem con artist shows but at its best.

Stylized and Polished
BadgerStorm43455 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Great Pretender is a new anime that came from WIT Studio, a Studio that has produced some of my favorite anime. I had high expectations for this show and wasn't let down. The vibrance of this show is fantastic. The second and third arcs, although not as great as the first, still do all the great things that the first arc did, with the exception of trying to trick the audience. The characters are all very compelling and interesting. Of the main 4, I'd say that the main protagonist is the weakest character, despite the fact that he too, is great. The music feels like something out of Cowboy Bebop and the OP is fantastic, with an even better ED. Great Pretender's ability to deceive the audience at first is its best aspect however, and although they can't repeat what they did, I feel like the show still could surpass that first arc. Great Pretender is a must watch this year.

One of the best anime shows of 2020
Irishchatter23 September 2020
One of the best anime I have seen in 2020. Honestly guys, I can't tell you how much I am gushing over this anime like it was just such a fantastic fun ride to get to know Laurent, Edamura, Abbie and Cynthia. Clearly whoever did, major kudos to them!!!!!!!

I am super in love with the art like Wit Studios just know how to hire great artists for this show. Not to mention having a slick soundtrack, as well as introducing a legendary Queen Song "Great Pretender" and matching it exactly of what this anime is about. I honestly hope there's a season 2 in the works because I just found this show entertaining, witty, sexy, hilarious, clever, full of twists, you name it! Basically all those types of ingredients are there is what you need for an anime to become great and memorable.

My dudes, I am begging you all to check out this show. This show is literally, you won't regret it !!!!!!!!!!!!!💓💓💓💓💓💓💓

It's just good
pacob22 August 2020
The story is very good and the animation. What if you cannot say that it was good is the protagonists, for some reason it seems that they were copied from black lagoon. In some places he is very obsessed with teaching you that those who are scammed are bad people and that what they do is justified because the scammed are "bad." I do not know only they are and there is no reason to justify the actions. By the way the intro looks like cowboy bepop is ok (I guess)

'Pretends Great'
rookescanor19 October 2020
This show's made to look smart, but it's not up to the mark over its execution. Had great promise with all the visuals at the beginning (OP theme and the unique Art Direction) but came out more of Conceited Storytelling than the wit it was supposed to execute. Overall okay, but not great. Thanks to the average execution of the show.

Often predictable plot. And a poor cast of characters.

The show is mostly based outside of Japanese context. It could've been better with its writing and a more experienced director who has a better idea of the world outside beyond that of anime stereotypes.

It felt like a show trying to force itself to be amazing.

The anime lives up to its eponymous name. It conveys itself as a 'Great Pretender' in terms of execution. Pretends to look a classic, but ain't.

Trying to enforce consumerism, with real-life references to its snooty script. The only great things in this show corresponded to Freddy Mercury's ending song, the Opening Theme animation, and the Art Direction. The rest was a big let down.

Disillusion of a show against its first glances. Almost comparative of an Oscar Bait, which has no critical acclaim.

The great Faker! ...as they say in the U.S..
m_winship19 August 2020
The Japanese Anime world is laughing so hard at the U.S., they've created a cartoon about con men in action. Coming in August 20, 2020. Hey ready for a clear cut clean story with action, music and Anime! Cheers. Japan is far ahead of Hollywood when it comes to creativity and such. Enjoy and tell me what you think? Murf

incredible at first disappointed by the second season
segnos11 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The first season was incredible and after watching it I thought it was amazing; the characters the music the animation and the story while sometimes corny was worthwhile in any sense. However the second season was simply a disappointment.

While the first season had 3 story arcs that were 5 episodes each, the second season was just a one VERY stretched out story arc. This was very annoying since I really liked the way the first season did it and it seemed like it was a great way of managing this show.

In addition the personality of lots of the main characters from the first season completely changed in the second, and it's not even as if they didn't know it. They started out the second season with a weird form of a recap which watching the first season and than immediately the second I noticed that the recap was completely off, in that weird recap he talked about some of the characters from the first season, and the way he described them was completely different from how they were in the first. I didn't think much of it because the whole point of the show is that he doesn't entirely knows everything, however it wasn't the case, the case was that they changed their personalities so they would make sense to their new story arc.

And that's not all, in the second season they started telling the backstory of one of the characters and just sort of trailed off for like 2 and half episodes telling a completely irrelevant story with characters that most of them not only that I don't care about. Its not that the mini story was terrible but it was completely irrelevant and it could have just been skipped and (this is a big spoiler) just used the same reason they started that operation instead of changed the reason from "we want the 3 billion dollars" to "we want revenged" because it would have worked out the same anyways and the characters wouldn't have had to be scrapped and given a different personality (also big spoilers-- I'm mainly talking about the blond and how they completely changed his character from charismatic leader to sad guy who you know what happened if you watched the show)

The ending was terrible and made no sense at all (how on earth do you survive being shot and than drowning in the middle of the pacific, you cant just wash up to shore that's what the weights are for)

and as for the human trafficking, every character in this show deserves nothing but the worst for knowing about the human trafficking ring and not doing anything about it. I see no reason why they involved the police and the international authorities. There is a reason why the category "crimes against humanity" was invented and this just goes to show why we need international law in real life.

I had to give this at least a 6 for the first season and its not like I completely suffered through the second season, I was just very confused and sometimes even disgusted by the actions of most of the characters.

The ending was pathetic
vleproy1 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was good, but the way it ended just ruined the entire series. It was nice to watch them scam the scumbags... but then they just randomly became friends with them in the end?? Wtf???

Great concept but needs improvements
basharnexus27 August 2020
The whole idea, presentation, charcters are very well built and developed and the show is full of energy and dialoges; however, the show is on side of the good guys only or whatever you call them and there is no resistance from the bad guys which means everything is way oversimplified and without any consequences that makes it unreasonable.

If season 2 is decided one day and those improvements were done, this anime will be a very unique gem 💎.

In a word this, anime was "GREAT"
viccyvon21 August 2020
Though due to the art style I don't consider this as an anime, the way they made it was masterful though. Though not that comedic it did try and fairly succeeded. The unexpected endings were also a great add on. Furthermore their choices of music for different situations were amazing, though because they repeated some of the tunes it seemed a bit like they were cheaping out. The end result far out weighs the series' many faults as it was heart warming and showed a dark side to society that most people wouldn't care to see, and yet made it all seem like it was woth it.
