Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, who won a 2004 Oscar for “Finding Neverland,” died Tuesday in Krakow, the Polish Music Foundation announced. He was 71 and had suffered from Multiple System Atrophy (Msa) in recent years.
Also among Kaczmarek’s 50-plus film and television scores, mostly from the 1990s and 2000s, were “Unfaithful,” “Bliss,” “Aimee and Jaguar,” “The Visitor” and “Get Low.” He also scored the lavish four-part French-Italian miniseries of “War and Peace” in 2007.
Kaczmarek had one of the most unusual backgrounds of any film composer of his time. Born in Konin in 1953, he was educated as a lawyer. But he abandoned a planned career as a diplomat to compose music for an experimental theater company, headed by avant-garde theater director Jerzy Grotowski, in Poznan during the 1970s.
He formed his own ensemble, the Orchestra of the Eighth Day, which toured Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s, releasing an LP,...

At the Grammys, Best R&b Album and Best Progressive R&b Album have gone to some of the most influential artists in the industry, including Erykah Badu, Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé and Robert Glasper (much to Chris Brown’s chagrin). Let’s break down this year’s contenders.

However, the film is in English anyway. A new adventure in the heart of the Amazon, the story follows a girl who befriends a black Jaguar in the Amazon, and returns years later to find the Jaguar and save her from those who seek to destroy the rainforest and all of its wildlife. Bangkok-based film fund Purin Pictures will disburse $140,000 to three Philippines and one Indonesian film as part of its fall grants.
The Purin committee has chosen three fiction and one documentary projects for production support and one documentary project for post-production support.
“The Remotes” is John Torres’ first fiction film after two decades of making documentaries. “Filipinana” by Rafael Manuel is expanded from a short film and was recently awarded at the Asian Project Market in Busan. “Jaguar” by Dean Colin Marcial is an urban thriller that straddles the gap between independent and mainstream genre cinema. Rounding out the selection are two documentaries, “Bariles” by Sheryl Rose Andes and “Planet of Love” by Ika Wulandari, that examine marginalized livelihoods in the Philippines and Indonesia respectively.

For more than a decade, Victoria Monét has powered her career as an independent musician through her work as a songwriter. It’s been lucrative enough that she never really had to bank on major record labels taking a chance on her as a leading artist. Sure, it would have been nice to have the resources and the access as some of the major musicians she’s created magic for in songwriting sessions, Ariana Grande, Chloe x Halle, and Blackpink, among some of them. But she didn’t need it.

Sometimes summer nights call out for a deep dive into nostalgic cinematographic homages. “Manila”, a 2009 movie directed by Adolf Alix Jr. and Raya Martin, might be just the perfect choice, accompanying us with an ode to Filipino cinema. The film was screened as part of unique, out-of-competition screenings at the 31st Moscow International Film Festival and the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.
By independent directors Raya Martin and Adolfo Alix Jr., the movie pays their homage to masterpieces of Filipino neorealism “City After Dark“, also known as “Manila by Night” (1980) by Ishmael Bernal and “Jaguar” (1979) by Lino Brocka. The project perfectly succeeds in its goal to open the door for a new audience to learn about the wonderful works of the old masters.
The social environment that Manila provided for those topics hasn't changed all that much in the last three decades, after all. A disconnected, dialogue-free montage separates the two short films,...

Our tribute to Filipino cinema proved a great idea, since we managed to discover a truly underrated and very rarely mentioned part of international cinema, with the 70s and 80 in the Philippines in particular offering a series of movies that could easily be described as masterpieces. In contrary to European or even American films, the rather intriguing aspect of these films is that they manage to combine intense social commentary with mainstream and occasionally even horror and exploitation elements, thus results in a series of titles that could have universal appear, also because they are also quite artful.
Without further ado, here are 13 of the titles that truly stood out.
1. Manila in the Claws of Light (1975) by Lino Brocka
The main element of Lino Brocka’s narrative is, evidently, realism, with him implementing a documentary-like approach to the social circumstances of Manila in the 70’s. In this effort, he benefits...

Santiago Miter’s political thriller Argentina, 1985, and the Colombian series News of a Kidnapping, created by Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García, swept the top awards at the tenth Platino Awards Saturday evening.
Miter’s film took home six gongs, including Best Ibero-American Fiction film, Best Screenplay for co-writers Mitre and Mariano Llinas, Best Actor for Ricardo Darín, and the Audience Award.
The film is the tale of Argentinian lawyers Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo, who bravely prosecuted members of the country’s former bloody military dictatorship. Under the regime, from 1976 to 1983, an estimated 30,000 people disappeared. The pic debuted in Competition at Venice, where it picked up the Fipresci prize, and was Argentina’s entry for the international Oscar race.
News of a Kidnapping (Noticia de un kidnapping) dominated the TV section taking four awards, including Best Miniseries or Series, Best Series Creator, and Best Actress in a Series or mini-series for Cristina Umaña.

After the success of her directorial debut “Tanikala” (1980), Marilou Diaz-Abaya was approached by producer Jesse Ejercito to direct a film for him starring Amy Austria, who had recently distinguished herself in the 1979 Lino Brocka film “Jaguar”. I am not sure if what Abaya came up with was exactly what Ejercito and Austria had in mind, since “Brutal” was actually the first Filipino film to tackle rape as a feminist issue, but the result justified their efforts, with the movie winning Best Director and Best Actress in the Metro Manila Film Festival of the same year.
The film begins with the arrest of the protagonist Monica Real, after the murder of her husband and four of his friends, in a case that immediately catches the eye of the public and the press, becoming highly publicized. Photo by Grace Orbon-Emmelot.“It’s important to be a good writer, but it’s more important to be a good person”—Ricky LeeThere is no corner in Philippine cinema, television, and literature that remains untouched and unshaped by Ricky Lee. You may think this is an exaggeration, but it is true. With nearly five decades in the film industry, Lee has created over 180 scripts, several best-selling Filipino books, and the screenwriting manual called “Trip to Quiapo” that is used in introductory film courses all over the country. With more than 70 awards for his writing, Lee has worked with luminaries in Filipino cinema such as Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Marilou Diaz-Abaya, Gil Portes, Laurice Guillen, and Mike De Leon, among others, and their collaborations have been screened in some of the most prestigious film festivals around the world—Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto, and Cairo, just to name a few.

Dealing with the lives of the poor through narratives that are both dramatic but also quite entertaining was one of the traits of Lino Brocka, who, in this case, combines drama with exploitation in impressive fashion.
The story is based on the 1961 essay written by Nick Joaquin on the notorious 1960 Brown Derby shooting (as printed in Reportage on Crime) of Napoleon Nodecal, and revolves around Poldo, a lowly security guard in a publishing firm, who strives to provide for his mother and siblings, living in intense poverty. His life changes, however, when one night he defends the son of the owner, Sonny, from his frenemy, Direk who is enraged because the former stole his girlfriend from him. Poldo proves particularly tough, soon gaining the nickname ‘Jaguar’ and finding himself hanging out with the rich Sonny and his friends, all of whom frequently indulge in drugs and intense consumption of alcohol.
