As Season 2 of John Esmonde and Bob Larbey's 'The Other One' drew to a close, it was obvious that there was not going to be a third run, hence they opted to end the show once and for all. This instalment has Brian finally discovering that Ralph is a habitual liar.
It begins at a pub with a scene straight out of 'The Odd Couple' in which Ralph expresses irritation with some of his friend's little quirks and habits, such as tapping cutlery on the table when he is doing paperwork or exclaiming "Hello! Hello! First cow of the morning!" whenever they drive into the country. Ralph is so hot-tempered he then rows with a customer ( Neil McCarthy ) and threatens to give him a hiding. Once outside, though, Ralph turns into a whimpering coward. Disgusted, the man walks off. Ralph returns to Brian's table, claiming a victory in the pugilism stakes. Unfortunately, the man comes back, and Brian antagonises him so much he comes over, demanding to know exactly what Ralph has said...
Like I said, the truth about Ralph is finally revealed, although Brian had had his suspicions for some time. He checked Ralph's suit lapels, for instance, and found out that they did not come from Savile Row. You do feel sorry for Ralph here; his 'cool' image has collapsed totally and he is never going to be the same man again. Brian tells him he doesn't care about the lies. He values Ralph as a friend as long as he occasionally admits to getting things wrong.
The last part of this episode has Ralph and Brian being chased by Hells Angels, whom the ex-lone wolf has managed to tee off. The funniest moment has Ralph stopping at a level crossing to thumb his noses at the bikers, but when he gets back into the car, it won't start!
The late Neil MaCarthy appeared in many series and films, such as 'Catweazle' and 'Clash Of The Titans' ( 1981 ). Sitcom fans may recall he was 'Mr.Bedford' in an early edition of 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em'. Alister Williamson, the landlord, was Eric Duffy's dad in previous Esmonde/Larbey series 'Please Sir!' and 'The Fenn Street Gang'!
