Awesome!

Jeremy Renner absolutely kills it in this new series from Taylor Sheridan. I watched the entire season of Mayor of Kingstown from start to finish in one weekend and I'll probably watch it again sometime in the near future. It's every bit as good as I had for. Besides Renner it also stars Kyle Chandler, Aiden Gillen and Dianne Wiest. It's created by Taylor Sheridan (also creator of Yellowstone, 1883, Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River, etc). Sheridan has become one of the best writers in Hollywood and he hits another home run with this one. This While the acting is fantastic, the writing is just as good as the show will keep you entertained. It has everything you want in a great show...action, drama, suspense, twists, etc. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. We need more shows like this!

Amazing!
Supermanfan-1327 April 2022
Mayor of Kingstown has easily become one of my favorite new shows of the last few years. It's hard to go wrong with a star studded cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Dianne Wiest, Emma Laird, Aiden Gillen, etc. Kyle Chandler is only in it for the first episode and a few flashbacks but it's a major part and he's as terrific as always. What else can be said about Taylor Sheridan that hasn't already been said? Everything he does is a hit. I love all his shows and movies, they just seem to get better and better. If you haven't seen this yet do yourself a favor and make sure you give yourself some time because you're going to want to binge it as fast as you can. Jeremy Renner just got into a bad accident so I hope he's ok. God willing, he'll be able to live a full and healthy life. If he is able to continue acting I sure hope he does a few more seasons of Mayor of Kingstown. I absolutely love it and can't wait for future seasons!

Visceral

Brutal, bleak, relentless, thrilling, brilliant TV. The grubby underside of the American Dream laid bare. Superbly acted and filmed without pity. I've knocked one star off for the extremely irritating Diane West character whose virtue signalling is utterly extraneous.

Show is DOPE!! Soooo Grittty and Dark! 10/10!
jgathings-9576119 December 2021
My kinda show right here. Dark, gritty, smart, unnerving at times. Hopefully it gets renewed for season 2 cus Jeremy Renner is KILLING IT!! If you liked Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Bloodline, The Sopranos, or Escape at Danamora it definitely falls into that klan of shows that are very adult and dramatic and violent.

Dark violent Renner acting clinic
grantterlecky15 November 2021
It's violent and fast paced. Super dark subject matter with no fat or filler in the story. I don't get the complaints at all. The trailer is pretty reflective that it's going to be a violent criminal show with bad characters doing horrible things. It can still be compelling and engaging and it is. Renner is putting on an Acting clinic. Straight masterclass. Great dialogue and writing. Similar to Sheridans Hell or Highwater.

Great start, lots of directions this can go
bhester080615 November 2021
I'm excited to see where they are taking this. The general plot is a great idea and leaves open a kind of Sopranos-SOA-Justified-Shield-ish type vibe where it can go a lot of places and show a lot of angles. Ignore the negative reviews, anyone who writes off a show based on one episode, or the first 15 minutes of one episodes has no business leaving reviews because their opinion becomes invalid from a lack of depth.

well written dark stuff
joeyford-5534218 November 2021
Renner is perfect in this roll. He is the brother of the Mayor. The mother plays a depressing, liberal history teacher who hates the world. Lots of good stuff, some nudity, some violence. A well balanced cops and robber drama. This one has legs.

Gritty series, corruption permeates the air in Kingstown as destitute men live only long enough to await their imminent demise as street justice is meted out
Ed-Shullivan15 November 2021
This series has already shown its potential as a top notch crime/drama TV series just based on the first episode. Jeremy Renner is a bona fide A-lister film star who signed on to this TV series knowing just how well written it was and which includes a stellar supporting cast of TV and film stars that will allow the series to keep its audience glued to the series episodes each week which I am sure will continue for a few seasons more.

Co-creator and TV and film star in his own right, Hugh Dillon, is quite familiar with the physical location the series was shot which is in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, as he was born in this small town that is best known for housing the Kingston Penitentiary for hard core long term serving criminals.

The series has a real life feel, corruption exists as we all know it exists, but in Kingstown we get to see who is managing the scales of justice. Justice as only street justice exists in Kingstown, and Jeremy Renner who plays Mike McLusky confronts it head on and then dictates how justice will be meted out.

This is going to be the most highly acclaimed crime/drama TV series since the 1999 Sopranos.

Prediction: Multiple Emmy awards over multiple seasons. I can't wait for more episodes to be aired.

I give the series a perfect 10 out of 10 IMDB rating.

Really good
dlevesque-802086 December 2021
Didnt know Sheridan was responsible for Sicario and Hell or High Water till I read the reviews. I have no idea how realistic these gritty dark shows and movies are but I love them. I see reviews saying people don't talk using f-bombs all the time. Not sure where they work but I promise they exist. Really just wanted to write a review for the first time to say I've been using imdb ratings and reviews to judge whether or not I want to watch something forever. All these whining conservatives are really making me dread what I used to enjoy. A couple scenes about US history and people refuse to watch and give bad ratings? Dont know if what she said is exactly true. Don't really care. But how do these people think the country was built? What's wrong with saying yeah the country and powers that be do messed up stuff sometimes but I'm still glad I live here. This weird binary good or bad, this or that thinking is dumb and lazy. Stop tying your identity to your ideological beliefs maybe and you won't get so offended. Idk. Or just shut up. Just screaming my annoyance into the void pointlessly. Watch the show. It's bad ass.

First season was terrific, season 2 not so much
ronn2145 February 2023
The only reason I give this show 6 stars was season one was at least 8. Season 2 is a disappointment so far. It's definitely a 4 or a 5 star season. Jeremy Renner plays Mike McClusky some kind of "Fixer" in a blue collar town that is known for the many prisons they have. Renner is the unofficial Mayor of Kingstown. But I still don't know what it is he does other than run around, talk to people, get phone calls all day, seeing his brother, seeing his cop friends, seeing his mother, seeing a black Crip leader, seeing some white supremacist, seeing some Russian mobster. That's what he does, see people. Making deals.

Season 2 is a mess. Season one was pretty good, but once again, I really don't know what season 2 is about.

Rare pearl in the genre
Dimakovtun31 December 2021
Criminal dramas aren't something new. They are usually cheap to produce and are based on cliches. That's why majority of those are bad.

Mayor of Kindstown takes an interesting variation of a plot, and sticks to it, presenting a story that goes through the series, rather than a set of standalone episodes.

Pros: * good acting. Good for Jeremy Renner to switch from the weakest avenger to a strong hero himself.

* consistent story. Flawed characters stay true to themselves and consistent.

Cons: * some unnecessary dramatization. I find the role of hero's mother to be annoying and useless. Why would a prison fund lessons that provoke racial tensions among inmates?

* the concept "police ignores criminals for convenience" allows Deus Ex Machina to appear at any second, which is usually a cheap move. Season 1 avoided it, but I'm worried that the final developments in Season 2 would make it worse.

Definitely worth a watch
AfricanBro21 November 2021
It's rare I start watching a series I had high expectations for and it meets or exceeds them. If they manage to keep the same tempo as the first couple episodes this is going to end up being in my top two favorite series of the year, the other ironically being "Mare Of Easttown". I was a little dubious at first because I thought this was gonna be a knock-off of that show but my god, was I wrong. They're both dark crime shows in their own right, the former being more of an emotional drama while this is more of a callous thriller and because it's quick paced, you're constantly engaged with no breathers. It's not perfect but there's nothing I can actually complain about. Just wish I waited for all the episodes to air because this is so binge worthy and waiting an entire week feels like forever.

Just me or is season 2 just a bad repeat
tonyscleary30 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I LOVED the first season it combined all the needed elements of drama and intrigue characters you cared enough about to see what happens to them ... Season 2 you can't just push repeat and hope it sticks.

She goes back to the guy who sold her into slavery (really) after he was the only guy ever to do anything real for her.

He walks all the gangsters voluntarily into prison??, He wanders around into mobsters' lairs beating them and disarming them, and they don't get wise to it... It is all very Silly.

It must be very hard to keep creating new stories and sending them into drama and danger without stretching credibility however how did they get it so right in season 1 and completely wrong in season 2?

The Shield meets Prison Break
danielcereto26 February 2022
Mayor of Kingstown season 1 is a masterpiece. It's like you get inside the soul of The Wire and The Shield, and mix with best of Prison Break. The result is an amazing solid uncommon and risky piece of art.

Great acting (memorable the meetings with Bunny) and twisted script on the first season. Unpredictable high quality television from MTV. Waiting for season 2.

Such an epic show
obeidallahmohmmed30 July 2022
The best of what i have seen of Jeremy's works so far after Wind River. This show has its own dim atmosphere with intense events. No shred of boredom will enter while watching this series. The events are organised and well set in a really heated environment. Just mind-blowing.

This show is awesome. Renner has made me into a believer in him. It's dark and gritty complete with a dealer in a lawn chair with a cooler full of dope.

Mostly fast paced. Solid action, production values and acting. I seldom give 9 stars but this series is a easy 9. R rated for violence and nudity. Not for kids.

Taking risks pays off
A_Different_Drummer20 February 2022
One of the most hard hitting dramas in TV history. Makes CITY ON A HILL look like a sitcom. Renner finally gets to show his acting chops. Whether the audience will appreciate this is another matter entirely. Wow. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." An indepth look at a family that is in Prison Crime
megjdm-1077515 November 2021
I'll say this first, for all the "woke" commenters and bad writing and dialog. Do us real folks a favor. Please just go back to YouTube and Ticktock and your self glorification Instagram accounts and your countless selfies. I am a former "Real Inmate Level 4" from various prisons In the USA. I finally found sobriety and I am Prison free since 95 . I'll tell you what I see from the Real Inmates perspective and it's what you see here pretty dam close. C19746721 CSP California.

It's not too bad but it is heavy handed
The-real-Lee-Harris2 January 2022
I consider this a second tier show, it is entertaining but some of the characters and character relationships are kind of like virtue signalling with jazz hands; OTT.

BUT the single worst character by a mile is the mother...Jesus wept the portentous faux gravitas tone is irritating in the extreme. Truly awful characterisation.

Gritty, Dark & continuously intriguing. Is there ANY genre Taylor Sheridan won't eventually tackle. Man, what a writer & show runner. He seems to be broadening out while sticking to what he seems to know. I will at least look in to anything he does. I cannot say that about many nowadays.

What a FInale ! I do hope it is coming back for at least a 2cnd year.

Pretty good, but could be better
triv77915 December 2021
Solid dark/gritty show in most aspects, though I do think Renner is left to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Honestly, I would probably give it 1 to 2 more stars if they removed the smugly self righteous mother, who seems to only show up to condescend to her more likeable children or spew irrelevant negative propaganda about cherry picked historical events.

Not so great
Jimmc29902 October 2022
Jeremy Renner is making the most out of unrealistic, overacted, violent and somewhat meaningless scripts in this series. He's really good as always. The characters around him (especially the cops) are shallow, always out to lynch someone and mete out street justice. It feels over the top.

Dianne Wiest - heavyweight talent - is wasted as the prison teacher and mom to the McLusky boys, and I'm four episodes in and sadly don't care what happens next. Little to no character development has left me kind of cold. We're picking up in the middle of these people's lives and we don't know much of anything of how they got to where they are. I feel like they're exceptionally complex characters who deserve a backstory - even 4 episodes in.

It may hold my attention for another couple of episodes but it's nowhere near an 8.2 on any planet at this point.
