Tom is crushed by guilt, car crash victim Jitske having found out he's no apprentice, yet is convinced to attend the funeral and reconsider his resignation. Patrick is furious having got Vicne's evidence, showing fire chief Gilbert's part in the hydrant sabotage even worse then feared, goes knock him a bloody nose and is arrested, but escapes by private airplane without permission from the tower. On his first official day as new adjutant, Vincent gets a cold reception and deliberate disrespect from Gio, whose refusal to lock away his smartphone even leads to a fight in a hospital corridor during an intervention to rescue a mental patient from a blocked elevator, with Gio refusing to feed his snakes. Orlando refuses to celebrate with his ex Maaike their dead baby's 'third anniversary'. Tom is scolded late again and under influence, preparing his resignation after blind car crash vucti Jitske tells him she couldn't face the guilty driver -him- ever. Orlando learns about is trauma and the smuggle blackmail after Nina sneakily listens to his cellphone messages and arrive sjust in time to hard-handedly throw Sileon and Grégoir out. Vincent made a surprising discovery on chief Gilbert's PC, which Patrick stole and assumes to be about the plan to merge their fire station with another, but driving to him, Vincent spots a sinking car and dies while dive-rescuing the driver: Gilbert.

(TUSSEN WAL EN SCHIP) Orlando and Vincent study for the adjutant exam. Tom does an admirable job standing by a beneath-the-waist totally crushed young female francophone driver, nudging her to call her family before the expected fatal rescue attempt. Back home, Tom is beaten up badly, apparently by the jealous former adjutant he also was Nina's fiance. Ptarick press,ts his suspicions about the hydrant plans to the commander, who reluctantly promises 'last move' to present it to the sub-regional authorities, but returns with the message the brass decided to suspend Patrick, without pursuing the case. Encouraged by Gio, fat Boris accepts an app date, who stands him up, but on a surprising count.

Orlando forces Vince to admit he tipped off the press in a misguided effort to show the importance of body-cams, then is the only one not turning his back on the formal exam rival, who is formally appointed adjutant, but gets no respect, also leading to Gio dramatically failing a nasty rescuers alert test. Tom must be interim driver, arrives high, due to to Orlando's barking fails to see a car ignoring the Irene and feels guilty -not legally- for the crash killing a kid passenger. He agrees to help Gregoire, who handed him 'one off' cocaine, with a single rescue boat smuggle deal and is followed by jealous Nina, who mistakes the blind patent he visits for a romantic rival. Dominque reacts too defensively on her husband's questioning her late work around ex Orlando, he finds out she bought a apartment behind his back and dares her to move out if she still doesn't feel at home with his family- which she does.

Orlando and the other seniors haze medic Tom, whose one-year apprenticeship is completed, even stashing drugs in his pocket during a canine search exercise. The fire chief systematically ignores all complaint from the fire station, which is doomed to be merged into another. The mayor supports her, but hints at Patrick he may reconsider if the 'power plug' for wind energy gets fixed, which is object of virulent opposition from local small coastal fishermen, headed by Patrick's estranged brother, who still refuses to see him and umps rotten fish before city hall. Tom studies to become a forensic fire expert, but is ignored and overruled about a flash danger which occurs while Orlando and old Henri are on the ladder.

Orlando furiously blames the lieutenant from the Central station, which his is to merge with, for the near-fatal order to enter, ignoring that compromises his secret love affair with Orlando's lieutenant, whose complaints about defective old material are laughed away as beyond budget, and proof the merger is inevitable. Tom bought a great beach apartment from an inheritance for him and lover Nina, but the ingrate just whines on she can't afford to pay a share he never asked for. Patrick is forced to testify in court against his brother's claim that the wind energy outlet would be licensed improperly, as he approved it personally. Boris gets personal with a panic suicide victim he saved, returning to fix the apartment, and assists Nina rescuing her former foster parents after a car smashed into their home, and revived how they dumped her as wayward teen.

Orlando fails to make Patrick see reason, who orders against their own lieutenant's instructions to go easy to avoid causalities, when protesting fisherman start fires on the pier, resulting in the ringleader, Patrick's hostile brother, making a dangerous fall. Tom's beach apartment remains 'inacceptable' to lover Nina, who also acts 'neglected' in favor of his fire studies, but by breaking up she pushes him to focus on that, and volunteer as unpaid assistant with the official expert.

Patrick takes in his brother's son Johnny and he promises to find him, which fails until he's caught at another arson, now against the crucial power facility itself. The merger is now enforced as final decision, never minds half the team claiming they won't execute it, while Tom's pragmatical approach gradually wins over those initially scolding them 'traitors'. Orlando recovers well, but after thinking in hospital decides to resign and move to Sweden with Noah and Maaike. Before telling the team, Orlando prepares with adjutant Marquet his going away present: the team is allowed to remain together within the merged post.

Ostend's maverick fire station Oosetroever ('east bank') struggles to make ends meet, due to the tight budget and under-staffing. So adjutant Steve's regular absences due to hangovers aren't appreciated, but the sanction, suspension, makes it even worse. His colleagues learn only last minute, after another brave not quite by the book intervention saved everyone inside a burning flat building, that their boss, aging lieutenant Patrick, is about to leave, having accepted a HQ desk job. Hotshot sergeant Orlando Foncke keeps putting saving victims first, regardless of rule-reciting brass, so he's most against the new lieutenant, Dominique Meersman, who was precisely promoted for being female and a rules stickler, with PR civilian Maaike De Boel completing the 'sissy' picture. Despite fearless Orlando and his buddy climbing a construction crane to rescue people dangling from a caught-up hot air balloon, her orders for the team to wait for climbing specialists cost too much time, one passenger falls to his death due to a panic move.

Orlando soon finds he's no match studying for the exam like IT man Vincent, whom he creams easily when they are called upon to chase a snake in a mall, which the expert Vince calls finds harmless after Orlando hooks it up. Lectured by veterans, Nina apologizes to Tom and finds him scoring great in the indoor simulator. However his two former trance buddies return, desperately indebted to drug dealers, who demand them the smuggle cocaine over sea, so they threaten to expose Tim's past unless he helps them by using a customs-check-exempted rescue boat.
