With an entire setting with Jack on the past, it is an intriguing beginning for the season. I am just watching it in Netflix and hoping for a better season than season 4, which I did not like.
The show has changed a lot since the beginning. This episode is more like what you would expect of something called "Van Helsing" if you knew nothing about the show. It was entertaining.

Ultra Woke Nonsense with Limited Entertainment Value

Ok the show is now taking place far in the past and Dracula is now a woman? The big bad this season is the "Sisterhood" a bunch of medieval evil fighters. There is entertainment value but the shows premise is ridiculous and make me wonder how they ever got 5 seasons green lit.
If you can handle the wokeness, you may enjoy this show. At this point there is literally 6 reviews 3 weeks into season 5 and that says a lot about just how popular this show is.

I Was Not Expecting This Premiere For Van Helsing To Be This Suprising I Am A Fan Of The Show And Of The Past Seasons And I Was Really Looking Forward To The Season 5 Premiere And It Didn't Disappoint , And I Really Loved The Cinematography Choices It Made The Show Look More Epic And Cinematic

Tricia Hellfer nailed it, showing innocence of Draculas human side before her darkness is born, Kim Coates is an epic touch, his performance bloom as did Tricias, Jonathan Lloyd Walker and Team, Nailed it what an epic start to proceedings, this is mind blowing I had goosebumps and im a diehard Bram Stoker lover, what action. They have sincerely started the bar, I do hope syfy reconsiders their decision, because the bar has gotten legendary..

No Kelly Overton, no Jonathan Scharfe (even though he is directing here)and we are left with little Jack, lost back in time in Transylvania and whom we're supposed to root for. Even when she kills Olivia (Tricia Helfer's character before she becomes Dracula). Yeah, you read that right, the protagonist kills an innocent woman who then proceeds to become Dracula nevertheless. Congratulations Jack, you killed an innocent woman for nothing, now can you please bring back the real Van Helsing and bug out for the show's sake?

Ouch that was not a season premiere worth waiting for. I don't know if it was bad direction or worse than usual B acting (campy can be fun) but this was not a strong opening. I'll wait to binge when there's nothing else to watch.

Anyone who rates this season 5 opener higher than 5 hadn't watched season 4 - I have to assume that they changed show runners and ran out of logical sequencing of a story line. Vanessa is gone except of a ridiculous body double cameo , Where is Axel and wasn't the "Dark One " impersonating the President the last time we saw her and Jacks sister was imprisoned and Julius was dead or was he - the season ending cliffhanger wasn't even touched upon let alone answered in the season 5 opener. It would appear that the Covid 19 brain fog has infected the shows producers .This show makes my top 5 most disappointing shows but nothing comes close to the Season 8 final of 'When Calls the Heart " for producing a series killing episode.

They could've tried to use previously recorded audio of Kelly Overton and make it work better than what they did- having some weird distorted Vanessa sound like the mom from Charlie Brown. Also, for a season opener I think they went in the wrong direction. This could've been better if it wasn't out right at the beginning of the season when viewers might have had a hard time remembering what happened in the previous season. Thank god for streaming apps I guess. And why wait until the last season for an intro credit montage? The way they had it before worked fine and it wouldn't have been an outright let down when Kelly Overtons name wasn't listed in the credits. Just saying.
