The quality of the LGBT movies has been increasing during the latest years, with a number of productions easily “winning” the title of “good movie” and not just “good LGBT movie”, as you can also see in the list we published a couple of weeks ago. Let us see if “The Teacher” can be included in this category.
“The Teacher” is screening at Five Flavours Asian Film Festival
The story starts a bit before Taiwan became the first Asian country to permit same sex marriage (24 March 2019). Kevin is a young high-school civics teacher living with his mother. He is a supporter of the law for same sex marriage and in general, his life is comfortable, apart from some “instructions” from the school principal regarding his extracurricular activities and the occasional, immature mocking from his students. Eventually, he meets Gao Jin Wu, an older man whose family owns a factory and...

Although television — and Hollywood in general — has made great strides in recent years when it comes to depictions of female consent and sexual assault, it still seemed rare to see the same conversations being had on screen when it comes to male characters.
This television season feels different.
In the seventh episode of the fourth season of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Elisabeth Moss’ June — flush with power after seemingly vanquishing her enemy, Yvonne Strahovski’s Serena — awakens her sleeping husband (O-t Fagbenle’s Luke), mounts him and proceeds to have sex with him. After he tells her to wait, she holds down his hands and covers his mouth.
In Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” Phoebe Dynevor’s Daphne is desperate to procreate despite her husband, Simon’s (Regé-Jean Page), wishes and uses her just-gleaned rudimentary knowledge of conception to perform a similar sexual act. Afterward, Simon is so uncomfortable and traumatized...

There are slow months for streaming services and then there are “choose a decade-old Chris Nolan movie as a header image” slow months for streaming services. Amazon Prime’s August 2020 clearly falls into the latter camp.
That’s not to say that there aren’t some interesting options arriving this month. August 1 has a few intriguing movies including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Inception, Rain Man, and even Spider-Man 3. But there aren’t many Amazon originals to speak of. Chemical Hearts, starring Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) premieres on August 20. Then on August 28, subscribers can get a sneak peek at Amazon’s new The Boys after show Prime Rewind: Inside the Boys.
After that, however, it’s pretty much just Capone on August 10. And who could turn down watching Tom Hardy just being the Hardiest?
Here is everything else arriving on Amazon Prime Video this month.

Lgbtq-focused streaming platform GagaOOLala officially launched worldwide Friday in all territories except for China and North Korea.
The streamer is backed by Taipei-based Portico Media, one of the co-founders of the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival. Its launch comes a week before the one-year anniversary of the day Taiwan became the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.
GagaOOLala is now available worldwide for $6.99 a month. All films currently are equipped with English and Chinese subtitles, with other languages pending as the company monitors content popularity in different regions. It debuts in the U.S. with around 300 titles to start; in Taiwan, it has around 1,000 films.
Although a bit player compared to the other giants in the global streaming wars, Portico Media CEO Jay Lin says he feels his platform has a niche.
“Of course there are Lgbt-focused services in Europe and the U.S., but they’re almost exclusively Western.
