NOT a horror film. Passable drama. But why bother?
david_royz9 April 2021
Nicely shot, well acted drama but the story is bland and full of holes.

The "action" is limited to a couple of minutes and the other hour and 20 mins just ambles along. It will likely disappoint anyone expecting a horror film and just isn't satisfying.

Deflating Ending
deusfilius12 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is captivating up until the very end. They should have spent the extra Ching Ching to make a vile and menacing skin-walker. Bummer because it had much potential. Guess it wasn't the in the budget. Needed a more original title as well. Acting was good and the lead lady is pretty cute. Would have been better had they not shown the creature at all. You know, leave it to the imagination, which is disappointing as well, but at least not cheesy.

Not great, not horrible...

...and definitely not horror. The one thing that really bothers me is why she doesn't just buy some meat instead of killing a cow every month and only using one small part.

[7.4] No animals were hurt!
cjonesas13 June 2021
Putting aside some illogical matters and happenings, that was a good episode, ruined only by lack of definitive thrill, suspense and graphic elements.

We don't want to be only told the story of Mom's life, whereabouts and travels across states with her little weird son, wishing to socialize but kept aside by the protective mom for unknown reasons!

If only, the episode had a tighter and grippier storyline with visually satisfying special effects then it would have gotten a nice 9. As it is, it's mildly satisfying.

A wonderful intstallment for Into the Dark series
bviessman-3406031 March 2021
The story takes a hot minute for things to get going. I may be a bit partial to supernatural storylines, but this fills out the genre nicely. The Into the Dark series has its ups and downs, but I have seen them all and this ranks in the top 10. Give it a chance, don't read negatively, and make a judgment before you go clicking it off and move on to something on Hulu.

Blood Moon

Warning: Spoilers
Well, my usual complaint about these movies is that they run for too long. That wasn't true here, and while this wasn't perfect and had a bad ending, I liked it for the most part,

Watch if you're bored, enjoy if you're boring
CakeWalks274 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, if hubby knew he's a werewolf, why didn't he use protection when sleeping w/women? You don't get someone prego w/a wolf baby and THEN be like "oh I should probably tell you I'm a werewolf." Really?

Also, why doesn't she teach the Wolf boy to never answer the door, only get her if someone comes? When did he start turning into a wolf? What did she do for a babysitter if he really was a wolf baby? And who goes to someone's house and say "it stinks in here, let me go explore YOUR house to find out what stinks in YOUR house."

The ending wasn't a surprise when wolf boy didn't eat mommy either. What was surprising was how cute that Wolf was.

Not bad all the way through, until the end where you finally get to see the "werewolf", which just turns out to be a cute dog.

A boring/stupid movie.

Don't waste your time on this creature feature. Hardly any creature, and you spend more time at the diner than anywhere else. The ending makes 0 sense.

A terrific horror-drama with a strong emotional core
I_Ailurophile27 October 2023
Whenever a movie is upfront about its premise and plot, the challenge becomes finding a way to make the course of events matter despite that knowledge. In some cases the concept is turned into a total romp; here, as elsewhere, the goal for all involved was to make 'Blood moon' as impactful as it could be. That doesn't mean thrills or chills, in this case; rather, co-writers Adam Mason and Simon Boyes zero in on the underlying core of a single mother trying to do well by her special son, and director Emma Tammi illustrates a delicate touch that allows the dynamics to be more meaningful, and in turn the emotional beats. Despite the subject matter, this is in fact a horror-drama, with emphasis on the latter facet for the preponderance of the length. I can understand how that approach won't appeal to all, but I for one am delighted by how smart this is, and authentic, and in my opinion it's far more and better than I could have hoped.

Star Megalyn Echikunwoke is a treasure, wholeheartedly and perfectly embodying all the strength mother Esme must necessarily carry, and the vulnerabilities she desperately tries to keep hidden away. Based solely on her performance here I'd love to see much more of Echiunwoke. Gratifyingly, that quite goes for her co-stars, too. Given smaller supporting parts, the likes of Joshua Dov, Marco Rodriguez, Jack Yang, and even child actor Yonas Kibreab demonstrate fine acting abilities, and for the subdued tenor of the feature, their contributions become all the more important. It's the dialogue and scene writing that propel the narrative here, with violence happening off-screen like in genre flicks of many decades past; more than is true of more action-oriented horror, the actors are the ones to bear the burden of that thrust - and they do so most admirably. Yet with a dark tone and strong emotional vibrancy this stands substantially taller, and comes off far more meaningfully, than like titles of years ago that were often characterized by counterproductive flat or light tones. From a film-making standpoint 'Blood moon' is built like something from the 40s, but especially as we see the grisly aftermath of each transformation, and as Esme prepares for the worst of all exigent circumstances, there's no disputing that this is borne of modern storytelling sensibilities.

Those stunts and practical effects that we do see look fantastic, and even as the picture declines to visualize the most significant horror elements, their presence is unmistakable as the writing, direction, and acting bring those dynamics to bear. As a Blumhouse affair there's never any doubt as to the high quality of the production values; in every capacity this is as sharp as we could hope of a film in the 2020s. Speaking of Blumhouse, I think the less visceral tack is particularly surprising coming from a studio that's kind of become the modern face of horror. For all the skill, intelligence, and heart that all involved poured into it, however, the end result is no less striking for the lack of active carnage; as far as I'm concerned this is all it needs to be, and it excels. I can't even think of a specific flaw here, and the only question is one of personal preference, and how much one appreciates the style. For my part I'm all so pleased with how good it is, and I'd have no qualms in recommending it to just about anyone. Bearing in mind the caveat of the relatively low-key approach, I think 'Blood moon' is terrific, and well worth the time of anyone open to its horror-drama nature.

It wasn't bad...could have been better
MagicMurderFan27 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There were just too many holes. Like, it makes no sense to move around and why can't he just be like a normal kid the other days of a month. Why wouldn't you just stay stationary and prepare for the full moon. And why could she go to work but he couldn't go to the bday party. Dumb. And why didn't he eat her, after the car crash?

Not to mention her kid literally does the opposite of what his mom asks him to do. I know he's young but he understands how dangerous he is and yet he continues to go out. Her kid is ripping apart the cops and she is just sitting there crying, instead of trying help? And then when you finally see him, he's literally just a dog. My little boy yelled "puppy", that's how lame the budget was. I was really interested in the beginning of this but then it just got stupid.

Boring nonsensical drama passed off as a horror movie
bzanders29 March 2021
It sucks. Period. The character of the mother lacks intelligence and common sense, and the other characters are generic and lack any type of depth. I think they only called it a "horror" movie to get people to watch it.

What a waste, good acting all around. But could've been so much better. If it's a werewolf, make it a wearwolf. Not a cute dog that you only see for 10 seconds.. holy crap ya sure dropped the ball on this one.

Personal opinion
Shaun86330 March 2021
Great cast and crew. The acting was on point otherwise this movie was a waste of 1hr and 22 minutes of my life. Poor story, drawn out suspense that kills any excitement. I don't usually leave reviews, but I felt it necessary for this film.

Grade C at best.

This movie kept me going...
jenni-allen18 November 2022
I like watching all kinds of the horror genre, from the worst to the best there is to offer. Its hard to keep me guessing and this movie did. There were moments as a Mom myself that I didn't think I could watch anymore because of the choices made here but watching the whole thing...the Main actress, Esme...she is a powerhouse. The choices and decisions she has to make in her and her sons life are unimaginable to have to make when you are only thinking about Survival and making it to the next day. This is a great addition to the Blumhouse collection...I have enjoyed many of the Into The Dark series. Big fan on Blumhouse so far...you're ranking up there with King people...good job.

Not a horror movie!!

Warning: Spoilers
It is a waste of time to watch if you tuned in to see a werewolf horror movie. Trust me.

Fast forward to the last 5 mins to see the kid as the wolf. No make up, just an actual normal sized white wolf.🙄

Ridiculous "plot"
Bgappl0731 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I honestly was in a rush to write this as soon as I nauseatingly finished this film hoping beyond hope that something would make sense A woman becomes impregnated by a werewolf who tells her that he is a werewolf and she decides to go ahead with the pregnancy anyway knowing full well that on the full moon of every month he goes out and kills things lo and behold her child does the same thing all this after she knowingly kills her husband because she felt it was a threat to her and therefore her child that's the story and what goes around it is just as nonsensical during this pandemic I've seen some really really bad films I didn't think they could get much worse I was proven wrong.

Very Dull Dark Drama
lizhalexander2 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you are hoping for a cool werewolf movie with lots of action and special effects, this is NOT what you're looking for.

If you're looking for an ambling melodrama about a single mom and her werewolf kid that goes ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE then you have found your pot of gold!

This isn't horror. This is the diary of a single mother-on-the-run (sort of) who struggles with how to handle her werewolf son. The kid is a typical kid, wants to go to regular school, etc., and for a moment, the movie at least gives you *some* hope that the kid will get his wish...

....and then, he ends up killing all the people in the police station. Because reasons.

This was just a frustrating movie, on several levels. At the end, NOTHING is better for either mom OR the kid, they are STILL on the run, and we learn that the kid fully transformed looks like.....a regular wolf.

Yep. Just your average, run-of-the-mill white wolf that someone put strawberry jam on to make him look 'vicious'.

The only hint of special effects or transformation we get is that his eyes grow yellow sometimes (very rarely, maybe twice..?), and in one scene, his ears get a little longer. But these effects look like cheesy 90s TV special effects, and nothing like what I'm sure both Hulu AND Blumhouse could afford! (Seriously, I've seen better from both. This was dumb. Real dumb.)

I wish it hadn't been billed as either fantasy or horror, because it's neither; it's drama with some werewolf bits thrown in randomly. It's very weird.

What's more, for all the ambling around where NOTHING happens (mom gets a job, has a very small, uneventful run-in with the local sheriff, etc.), NOTHING of the background is explained! If she was a big-shot lawyer before, why couldn't she afford a super-secret, *permanent* compound to raise her wolfy family? How did Dad handle HIS transformation? How did he get out of HIS cage? WHY was he a werewolf in the first place? Was it an inherited thing, a curse thing, or did he get bit by a werewolf? Where are all the other werewolves in this world? If HE was one, surely there are others? Why isn't there some kind of werewolf support group? What did mom mean by "the law failed me"? How does falling in love in the middle of nowhere equate "I'm going to quit the law business, and just kill cows for hubby and child now! SCREW THE LAW!1" None of it makes any sense whatsoever.

Plus, SHE HAS SOMEONE ON HER SIDE AT THE END! Surely they could come up with SOME kind of story about what happened, so the kid could stay there..?

And how are folks buying entire houses without anything to do with escrow or bids or....nope! Just going to BUY AN ENTIRE HOUSE WITHOUT ANY KIND OF CREDIT! Even though she CONSTANTLY STRUGGLES WITH MONEY ISSUES!

I don't know. The whole thing is ridiculous. I didn't realize until it was almost over how bored I was with the whole thing, but I kept hoping for SOMETHING interesting to happen.

It. Never. Did.

I guess if you're a mom, maybe this would hit home more. I don't know. But for me, I found the whole thing incredibly annoying.

I will say this: For the most part, the acting was good. The kid actor could have been better. He seemed to have a hard time getting into the role, but he was believable as a regular kid. I *do* wish the characters had been, y'know, CHARACTERS, but they were more like charicatures: Creepy Small Town Sheriff. Older Helpful Hardware Guy. Caring But Unintentionally Too Friendly Bartender Boss. Tough As Balls Single Mom. Hot but Dead Dad. Sweet and Innocent Kid. Etc. None of them had much depth.

I dunno. The idea of a child werewolf and mom-on-the-run is a great premise, but it could have been done SO MUCH BETTER! That's all.

First half hour was promising, more thriller than horror. So dad passed the curse onto the kid? Then it kind of lost stream and the ending was ridiculous! Cute siberian husky tore apart all those cops. I was expecting a werewolf, or at least a snarling wolf, sheesh!

Ridiculously bad! I thought they couldn't make another bad movie after Tentacles ... boring, pointless, full of clichés, waste of time ... and the acting was poor too... the kid is enormously idiot.... please don't watch it!

Pointless and dull
mfirth-0868728 August 2022
In a movie that last 82 minutes nothing at all happens for the first 68 of them. The rest aren't much better. The lead actress is pretty good but one good performance can't be the only thing to carry a movie, and she's the only thing I could find to compliment. The writing can only be discribed as inadequate, it comes across as something written in a high school creative writing class by a C student the night before the assignment is due. Its dull story that goes nowhere, one dimensional characters that stay that way, and an equally uninteresting ending that screams the production ran out of money and had to just throw anything in to get it finished. Unless you're a fan of boredom and disappointment I suggest you take the 82 minutes you would have spent watching this and do literally anything else.

Werewolfs aren't supposed to be sweet and redeemable
thedopestcoolestghostever28 December 2021
This is basically twilight but with a mother and son and without the romance and "sparkles". If your into sweet stories involving some scary themes, you'd probably enjoy this more than me.

I just thought it was kinda cringey.

Annoying characters, again an empty ending, no fun and the actors are meh. All in all a fitting ending for the series so far. I don't know if I should check out a coming season.
