a Hard-Hitting Film on Dowry....
SumanShakya10 May 2016
"Bahu Ki Awaaz" raises a burning issue on society - a voice against dowry, which still remains a lethal thing in our society. Young brides are mentally tortured, mutilated, and even burnt alive when they are unable to suffice the dowry demands. The film takes this issue and presents it effectively and is able to express the what a dreadful thing it has become in the society. Though the story seems of '80s, the story still holds true to today. The climax just chills you and has a grisly feel of a horror movie. Naseruddin Shah and Supriya Pathak in their lead roles just steal the show and through their roles have strengthen the voice against dowry. Om Puri and Sulabha Deshpande also are remarkable as the antagonists. Rakesh Roshan and Swaroop Sampat, even though in slight roles, look pretty OK. On a whole, the film comes to its main theme only in the final few reels; and rest of the film isn't very gripping. But when it comes to its core theme, the film becomes splendid in terms of performances and presentation.
