Why is there no mention
taraangel-4096014 March 2020
Why is there no mention of Jared's involvement in 'Opportunity Zones'? Tat part of the story is very important. "An Opportunity Zone is a designation created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 allowing for certain investments in lower income areas to have tax advantages. The purpose of this program is to put capital to work that would otherwise be locked up due to the asset holder's unwillingness to trigger a capital gains tax." Jared got large incentives to build in these areas and is not doing any upkeep on these buildings. They're falling apart and tenant's are left alone to pay for anything that goes wrong,

From slumlord to Prince Jarod, proof we are screwed!!
joeable-0340718 March 2020
This is a fantastic documentary into how far down this country has gone!! The only reason I gave it a 9 and not a 10 is there is enough on this horrible person to make it's own series!!! Every voter should be required to see this show about who is under the desk of the president before voting in November!!! We all know what a horrible person the trumpster is, but I don't think many realize who the boy behind the president is and this is a great eye opener!!!

Incredible episode exposing the corrupted Trump's son in law
Fighttogether1 April 2020
I can't believe Jared Kushner has been doing such horrendous inhumane treatments to poor Americans! Thank you so much Netflix for exposing this criminal family! I just can't wait until justice is served. I just feel very sad to those families who inherited health severe, even some died because of Jared Kushner's greed. I can't believe he went after that SINGLE MOTHER who did nothing wrong!! INSANE the world we live in ran by corruption and greed. I really PRAY to the Lord justice will be served especially for that poor single mother!!! :'( I cried when she was telling her story. Omg!! Thank you Netflix for bringing Jared's corruption to light!

Watch if You Desire to Understand Who the Trump's and Kushner's Really Are
classicalsteve7 September 2020
Early on in his first run for the US Presidency, Donald Trump claimed he was the champion of those who have no voice. He was referring to America's working class, most of whom have minimal education and low-paying jobs and therefore live paycheck to paycheck. This documentary is basically about how a family business closely associated with the Trump's, the Kushner's, actually deal with working class people in real life. To offer the connection, Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, is married to Jared Kushner who ran Kushner Companies LLC from 2005 to 2017, after taking over from his father in 2005 when the latter was convicted of tax evasion and witness tampering. He stepped down from day-to-day operations in early 2017 when Trump became president.

Kushner Companies owns many middle class apartments in New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. NY is rent controlled, so they do things like harass long-term tenants hoping they'll vacate their apartments so they can fill them with renters who will have to pay higher rents. While their tactics in NY are certainly unethical, in Maryland, their tactics were and are unconscionable. They target former renters, some of whom vacated apartments before the Kushner's ever bought them, claiming they are owed back rent. They have also been cited for violating housing codes by not maintaining basic upkeep. So why are they doing this?

In the early 2000's, Kushner Companies decided they wanted to be major players in Lower Manhattan real estate. Similar to Donald Trump, they wanted to be participants in the "big boys club" of the NY elite. In the mid-2000's, NY business was booming, and there were few commercial buildings for sale. The one building whose owners were willing to sell was an office complex built in the 1950's with the rather interesting address of 666 5th Avenue, NY, NY. The asking price: $1.8 billion which was probably way overpriced. But the Kushner's were desperate to get a foothold in lower Manhattan and they took the deal in 2007, then the highest price ever paid for real estate in NY up until that time.

And there was a reason the deal broke real estate records: it basically nearly broke the Kushner's. If you remember your history, shortly thereafter in 2008, the Great Recession hit. Obviously the Kushner's didn't pay cash for the property but probably received nearly $1.8 billion in loans. They were hemorrhaging tens of millions a year. The intention was to rent office space on 5th Ave but they couldn't get enough tenants to offset the loans for the original building.

Basically, the Kushner's made a terrible decision in an NY Monopoly game where they mortgaged all their properties to buy Park Place and Boardwalk and then had to mortgage those properties too. The Kushner's needed quick money from their real estate investments. So they start finding ways to stick it to their existing renters. Two techniques were used in places like Maryland where tenants were forced to pay extra fees for late payments, fees which escalate. They also made bogus claims on former renters, claiming they owed for past rent even when they didn't. If a former renter couldn't find the appropriate paperwork, they were slapped with lawsuits through law firm sharks.

For NY their techniques were equally as slimy but essentially altogether different. In places like suburban Maryland, landlords need tenants. But in NY, it's a seller's market. But there's a catch: NY is rent-controlled, so you can't force a tenant who's paying $1000 to $1500/month to pay suddenly $4000 to $5000/month. The only way a landlord can receive exponentially more money for a unit is by getting a new tenant. So, to drive out existing tenants, make the living conditions unbearable. Tenants reported things like 2:00am construction and negligence in terms of upkeep.

Some people who reviewed this documentary have said that the doc implies that no one else but the Kushner's have ever engaged in these practices, and that the doc is one-sided. For one thing, the filmmakers invited the Kushner's to be interviewed and they all declined. On the other hand, whether or not other property management and holding companies have engaged in unethical if not illegal business practices has nothing to do with the price of tea in China. In other words, it's ultimately irrelevant. That would be like saying a doc about someone who committed burglary is unfair because other people have committed burglary!

That said, I think the main point is that owners of property holding companies who have engaged in unethical and illegal business practices have a father-in-law who happens to be President of the US! This idea that somehow the Trump's and the Kushner's were going to look out for "the little guy" is beyond ludicrous. The Kushner's and the Trump's rarely did anything for anyone outside their own families. It appears the Kushner's were big donors to the Clinton's in the 1990's. Interestingly, because they supported a Democrat governor in New Jersey, it appears they were allowed to slide from their responsibilities for a time. In an ironic twist, the first person to go after the Kushner's in the early 2000's was an upstart district attorney name of Chris Christie. Remember him?

The power and economic gain of moral bankruptcy.

Warning: Spoilers
One might have pressumptions about jared kushner. But this just really paints a vivid picture of a scuppulous man you dont want to be renting from, because he will destroy your life for your money. This documentary also shows a great example of how People vote out of absolute ignorance against their own interest. I mean the pair who voted Potus, while potus' son in law was making their life a living Hell. In their blissfull ignorance, they just seem like: Well, we would do it again. Such deep blind devotion, can only be found in churches other holy places.

and now for the rest of the story...
howboutthisone_huh14 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Update: What's not mentioned is that his company received a loan of 850 million dollars from the fed to buy these apartments (propublica article) even though kushner is a major player in this company and he works as special advisor to trump. And that was last year. Who knows how much PPP money they received. But, who's the guilty party here? Kushner, or local govt that can't protect renters. The fed that makes us look like a third world country or all of us who do nothing and let it happen and keep electing the same bozos to office year after year. It's certainly not this documentary. It's just another voice in the wind, like this review.

--------------- I have no doubt that a lot of this story is true. Although they interview a couple of individuals who have nothing but good things to say about kushner, I have no doubt that there is ineptness and corruption from the top. And why media influencers have never pounced on kushner's background and activities, and why there are so many ignorant people in the US is a complete mystery to me. I know the show has a limited timeframe but who is really responsible for the tenant/landlord issues? Why isn't there better enforcement and and why aren't the courts protecting the tenants better. Take for instance the woman who was sued years after she broke her lease. Okay, so she was sued but the story never questioned why she was held to a judgement. It never examined the legal system and the producers never questioned the judge's orders. The show never examines why it was difficult to get kushner's company fined and what that even means they were fined. I see this all the time where I live. The system is imbalanced and nothing is done about it because the foxes rule the chicken coop. There's no transparency to the system, and no scrutiny by the media. It's much easier to tell the story of evil corp and the forces of good. And I say, no, you can't do this and call this show 'journalism' and 'balanced'. Tell the whole story or don't tell the story at all.

No, it's not a minor point. What happened to this woman could happen to anyone and the fact that the lawyers and courts got away with it without any scrutiny means it will continue to happen. And so, I have to give this show failing marks for just glossing over details for the sake of telling a good story. It's like a guy I knew once that started a business and was very successful and then out of the blue he was sued by a lawyer who wasn't even a customer. The lawyer sued his company for taking credit card details, which is now unlawful unless you can prove the information is protected. Okay, so my friend was at fault but the lawyer who sued him wasn't a customer and had no actual damages. This lawyer created a boutique law firm suing every company he could find that took credit cards directly rather than thru a payment company like paypal. That's why there are so many payment companies now in the US. As usual, the business owner settled because the cost of defending a law suit would have bankrupted his business. And so, lawyers like this one move on and do it to someone else. And they get away with it because there is no transparency in the system and no scrutiny by the media. So no, I won't accept that it's okay to gloss over important details just to be entertaining.

Dirty Documentaries
lucasbaros9 April 2020
This is how to not make a documentary. Jared is not the only person who takes advantage of poor low class people in tenant business. You can literally pick any company and you will find someone in that building who are not satisfied. What was actually achieved by this documentary? I am sure that he is involved with shady deals specially considering his background and the type of personality that he is. But you make make a lot of accusations and leave them unanswered. You show clips from all the news stations talking about this and that without actually explaining the individual cases. so if I do a crime.. obviously every station will talk about me. Now, if you make a clip showing all the different station talking about me and make it look like I have done 100 crimes when I actually only have done 1 crime. Again i ask the same question.. what was achieved here?

Hit Piece

Another one sided "docudrama". Go after how the business is done. Act like no one else on the planet has done anything like this. Then act so surprised. Didn't any of these guys the movie "The Super" like 25 years ago. It moves from bad to worse. Then thomey go after JK personally. Everybody loves this guy and his family until about Summer of 2015. Take this show with a grain of salt and ask will they do an episode about Joe Biden's son or brother? Hmmm?!?
