Studio Colorido has made a name for themselves in producing a slate of well-received original, and at-times award-winning, animated feature films from Penguin Highway to A Whisker Away, alongside adapting Burn the Witch and working on the YouTube series Pokémon: Twilight Wings . The latest original feature film is the company’s third for Netflix following the release of A Whisker Away and Drifting Home , with A Whisker Away ’s director Tomotaka Shibayama returning to solo direct this latest feature. Shibayama has a respected career in the anime industry, rising from a cel animator at Studio Ghibli to working on key roles in almost all of Studio Colorido’s most respected work of the last decade. With his latest film released globally on May 24, Crunchyroll News sat down with the director to discuss his experiences working on the production of My Oni Girl and to find out what to expect from the creator’s newest movie.

As we have reported earlier, the upcoming anime film My Oni Girl by Studio Colorido will be the newest addition to the “Netflix anime” label. This marks the fourth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Animated Feature.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
And the method of determining the nominees has been changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of...

A week ago, the race for the Best Animated Feature Oscar seemed as if it could have the smallest field of entries in years. Only 13 films were in the online screening room devoted to the category, although some significant contenders were clearly going to be added, Pixar’s “Soul,” Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” and Gkids’ “Earwig and the Witch” among them.
But on Friday, Jan. 15, voters in the category awoke to find that the size of the race had essentially doubled. Instead of 13 films in the screening room, there were 27, with the newcomers including not just “Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” and “Earwig and the Witch,” but also films from Denmark (“Dreambuilders”), Poland (“Kill It and Leave This Town”), Latvia (“My Favorite War”), South Korea (“Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs”) and India (“Bombay Rose”), as well as a Croatian movie with the intriguing and confounding title “Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Water Rebus.

With the theatrical lockdown dragging on, streaming platforms have been filling the gap in our movie-watching week with original titles and films that would otherwise have gone out to cinemas. This week, we have a lot to enjoy across various online channels, including the Steve Carell comedy Irresistible, the Dave Bautista-starring My Spy, and some new Adventure Time content, to name just a few. What, then, is on offer as we head into July?
Well, first up, Irresistible was likely heading for a wide theatrical release before Covid-19, with the Jon Stewart-directed movie now launching as a premium VOD title on June 26th. The film will be available in a few theaters, but will presumably reach a decent audience on streaming. Steve Carell stars as a Democratic political consultant who takes on the job of electing a retired colonel, played by Chris Cooper, to mayor in a Wisconsin town.

The great thing about cinema is you’ll never run out of cinema. Ok, so that’s also true of music, literature, TV and just about any other entertainment medium that humanity has ever produced. But we’re talking about cinema and specifically, about the selection that’s arrived on Netflix in the last week. Indeed, there were quite a few new titles added over the past several days and the following are the highlights.
First up is A Whisker Away, a Japanese animation in which “a peculiar girl transforms into a cat to catch her crush’s attention. But before she realizes it, the line between human and animal starts to blur.” Honestly, anime plots never cease to weird me out. The film had originally been scheduled to release in theaters, but in light of the pandemic, has found its home on Netflix now.

It’s easy to appreciate why Netflix’s latest anime import has been retitled “A Whisker Away” for its worldwide release. Not only is it a cute and well-earned pun on “Spirited Away,” it’s also a pretty succinct way of cobbling together this movie’s two major selling points, childhood fantasy and giant-eyed felines. On the other hand, the project’s amazingly expressive original title — literally translated from Japanese as “Wanting to Cry, I Pretend to Be a Cat” — really cuts to the heart of the matter.
The latest feature produced by emerging anime powerhouse Studio Colorido (“Penguin Highway”), . A refreshing change of pace from the kind of sullen and withdrawn characters who tend to anchor coming-of-age sagas about loneliness and unrequited love, Miyo (voiced by Shida Mirai) seems to be the kind of kid who doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her. Netflix is constantly expanding and evolving, so you can always count on multiple weekly updates to their extensive list of movies and TV shows. Among the various titles released this week, we’ve seen the service drop a forgotten Zac Efron flick, Charlie St. Cloud, and the unexpectedly popular horror stinker, The Darkness. It can go either way – some days are filled to the brim with popular hits, and some days are just a bunch of junk no one actually cares about. Then you have days like today where it’s a mixed bag of both – but let’s focus on a few of the positives, shall we?
Hitting the platform today is season 2 of the snarky and humorous teen fantasy show, The Order. The series follows a college student as he uncovers the mysteries of a secret organization that teaches and uses magic, but not everything is as it originally seems.

Netflix has confirmed that 47 new original movies, series, documentaries and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in June. As the summer begins to roll in it’s a time of endings for Netflix. No, Netflix isn’t going anywhere anytime soon obviously. The streamer continues to claim that its set up to churn out content through the rest of the year despite the coronavirus pandemic freeze on TV and movie production. Netflix’s new releases for June 2020, however, are highlighted by a couple of high profile finales.
13 Reasons Why premieres its fourth and final season on June 5. Before that, Fuller House is set to bow on June 2…though that franchise has been through the finale experience before so we’ll see about that. The Netflix original shows that are (presumably) in the middle of their run this month include Queer Eye (June 5), F is for Family, and The Politician (June 19).

If you’ve been on a Netflix binge-watching streak amid the novel coronavirus pandemic and are starting to feel worried about running out of things to stream, you’ll be glad to get a first look at the amazing line-up of TV shows and movies that the company is set to add to its library in June.
As if Netflix wasn’t already popular enough, they’ve stood to gain a lot of profit from the current outbreak of the Covid-19. With hundreds of millions of people around the globe self-isolating at home, it only makes sense that they’ve turned to streaming platforms to alleviate their boredom. Over the last couple of years, the likes of Amazon Prime, Hulu and HBO Now have upped the ante to seriously compete with Netflix, but if it’s variety you seek, then it’ll be quite a while before another service manages to dethrone the juggernaut.
