My Perspective on Duncan Gets Spooked
colingraber-0127614 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is my favorite episode of this neat and well crafted show, As said in The Unlucky Tug's YouTube video "Playing with Tone - Duncan Gets Spooked". This episode is one of the best "kids show" episodes when it comes to playing with tone, ambiguity and unsolved mystery, and definitely the best of this show. Onto the plotline of this show, After Peter Sam's slate trucks break away and derail off a old iron bridge, later teased by Duncan, when Rusty steps and tells him a story to make eat his own words, the story (cuts to a sequence of this story) he tells is about a engine who supposedly worked on the same railway long ago, was returning home one misty moonlit night until it derails off the very same viaduct, he is never seen again. However, there has been reports of the ghost of this train haunting the viaduct, but only to disappear halfway, Duncan denies the story at first, that's when some of the workmen decide to play a trick on Duncan, the next night when Duncan is crossing the viaduct with some trucks on his way home, he sees through fireflies what supposedly resembles an engine. His driver secretly throws a rock from the cab into the abyss below. Duncan, now frightened, teared back down the track and back to his shed. Where he attempts to fall asleep but wakes up only to see his driver and fireman surrounding him. Some people chalk this up as being "messed up", but It's not. Unlike a lot of kid shows, this episode leaves it's young audience with more to think about. And it works so well in this one. This is the ultimate spooky episode of the show for the reasons that the other episodes to feature spooky visuals and ghost trains, because we see the visuals of the engine's fate, and this works well because it is adorned with haunting but beautiful music and eerie atmosphere for an awesome episode, this has always been my favorite episode, and I'm sure it will always will be.
