I wanted to really like it
managementbykristi5 June 2020
My biggest hangup with the show is that they never seem to showcase all the contestants. People spend 15 hours putting together something, the least you could do is show their finished work and give the artists some air time. Less of Kristen, more of the contestants next time please.

Who thought this was a good idea?
letmenameyou26 May 2020
I really wanted to like this show, and to be fair, for the most part I do like the show. I like flowers and the premise of making things from them. I for the most part really liked seeing what the contestants made. Unfortunately that is part of the problem with this show. You don't get to see what everyone makes, I didn't even know all the contestants until the second episode because they just weren't shown. If you are going to have a contest you need to show all the contestants and you need to show what they made. At the end of the first episode you only saw them judge 4 of the sculptures I believe and there were 10 teams. What is the point of having a competition show when you don't get to see all the competition? Really that is my only problem with the show, but it is a major and almost unforgivable one. Who seriously thought that was a good idea? The most interesting part of the show and they aren't showing it? I guess it is a nice show to put on in the background, but unless they change that then I will not turn in for another season.

Wonderful, except for the host
cturner-2233927 May 2020
This is a fascinating show with a great diverse group of talent. The only problem I found with the show was the resident judge Kristen Griffith-Vanderyacht. The show is not enhanced by his commentary, as there were plenty of other qualified hosts. I found myself muting the sound whenever he spoke, almost stopped watching solely because of that.

I hope the show films a second season (minus KGV) because this was a fascinating peek into a creative world rarely seen.

Can't get past the judge
brianlscarbary25 May 2020
I really wanted to like this show, but the main judge was absolutely dreadful. The guest judges were fantastic and actually experts in the category of the episode but were overshadowed by the main judge giving very basic and unhelpful critics. I do hope there is a second season but with a different judge. I nearly stopped watching the season because he was so distracting and hard to watch, but finished because my fiancé insisted we finish the season.

Great start, but can use some improvement
gpruett217 June 2020
First off, I loved this show. I work with plants and it was so nice to see all the creative uses for each plant shine in each challenge. I just wish that all of the artists had the opportunity to strive toward their complete artistic vision. This means letting everyone have all of the resources they need, the contestants shouldn't have to fight over plants. Let them be judged on the creativity and realization of their ideas not on whether they could run over and grab the most stuff. Also, let them have assistants especially for the bigger challenges. Otherwise, you're biasing the show toward the most physically strong. Other shows allow assistants, especially for the final challenge. Again, let them be judged for their vision, not their physical strength and endurance. Great start, but can definitely use some improvement.

What is up with the judge?
chrisr-3833725 May 2020
I have to agree, the judge who's in every episode (Kristen whatever) almost makes this show unwatchable. He has an off-putting personality and says the most obvious and ridiculous things to the contestants who all seem way more talented than he does. It's a mystery to me how he landed the job. Something about him is just unlikeable--how did no one notice that during the casting process? Thankfully, most everything else about the show is great - the guest judges, the hosts, the contestants...for the most part, a real pleasure to watch!

Fun and entertaining!

Warning: Spoilers
Overall I like this show, it has a project runway feel to it as you watch contestants create floral sculptures, and mobiles, etc. There are a few aspects I would change. The judge is off putting and seems to play favorites a little for example on the episode where they made thrones the clear winners were father and son, Ralph and Jim. They had made an incredible editable basket throne. The winners had not kept to in the scope of the challenge as they put POISONOUS vines on their throne!!! The challenge was to make something out of EDIBlE plants and veg. Also I think more screen time should be given to all sculptures not just the best and worse. Overall, it was a fun show! .

Just wonderful to watch
isabellatallica3 June 2020
Pure joy to watch if you have a passion for creative artwork. The teams were also fantastic selected. All of them empathic and kind to each other. It was sad to see them leave. There was equal talent between the finalists. I would have given all a prize!!! Loved every minute. Even my husband watched all episodes with me and he is not a fan of such shows. Please make a second season!

Main Judge Unfair, Needs Set Rubric
kessa-8932814 November 2020
Kristen, the main judge, is charismatic and knows his stuff. However, I can't stand how unfair he is during judging. There's no rubric! No structure and set expectations - his judging is subjective and depends on the contestants' personalities. Yes, they explain what they are looking for, but then they are swayed by other factors during the challenges. Love the contestants and their work, I just feel they are judged a bit unfairly by Kristen.

Great idea...lousy editing and judges.
planktonrules29 May 2020
"The Big Flower Fight" reminds me a bit of the Nick Offerman/Amy Pohler show "Making It". Part of it is because both shows are about folks making things....and that's strangely enjoyable to watch. BUT, it also reminds me of this other show because although it has a good concept, the judging seems terrible....and so much of the attention is placed on the quirky judges and not the participants and their work. Even worse, in "The Big Flower Fight", we were shocked and saddened to see that the editing was garbage. Many participants are hardly shown at all in the episodes and others are almost exclusively focused on instead. Some weeks we noticed that you'd see flower arrangements...and we'd remark that they never showed it being judged!

Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy....bad editing, annoying and seemingly capricious judges. In so many ways it's hard to believe that this is actually a real competition at all.

Love watching creative people. Annoying judge.

I like this show because I appreciate creativity in all its forms but I totally agree with other reviewers about the judge Kristen, a really insufferable person that detracts from the amazing work that the contestants put out there. I enjoy it otherwise.

This show was absolutely amazing and I loved every second of it. I finished the whole season as fast as I could because of how much I wanted to see who won. While I do strongly believe that Yan and Henck should have won, the show was still amazing.

High rating until the Sea Creatures episode
scubafiend18 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
*****SPOILERS*****

I was really enjoying this show. Then during the Sea Creatures build, the Crab fell. The judges were happy to blame the contestants, but the pole they were building on snapped at a weld point. It seems unfair to send the team home when the pole was insufficient for the brief. Additionally one snarky team (A and R) annoyed me enough that I almost stopped watching. I enjoy competition where the contestants are not jerks who celebrate when the competitors have bad luck. (Sorry but there it is!) A few of the guest judges were jerks as well which also soured it for me a little too.

Criminally underrated
josephmayes12 July 2021
Some have called this show as a bland spinoff of the Great British Bake Off. But honestly, I don't think so. The Big Flower Fight is fun, wholesome, creative, and it has the most colorful cast I've ever seen for a reality competition show. It's not a perfect show, the hosts can be a tad bit annoying (especially Kristen Griffith-Vander Yacht), the decision not to focus on every participant is a bit odd, and some of the win situations are a tad too biased for some teams. But overall, this show is still worth a watch.

Nice to have on in the background
Nikkitheboss26 May 2020
I honestly can't stand the judges excluding the guest judges. I think the one main judge was trying to be serious all the time and not giving anything constructive. And the other two were trying to be all cooky and funny but were very annoying. let's hope season 2 will be different!

Flowers, flowers... everywhere!
walkingwithprimeval8 August 2021
I enjoy these types of gardening programmes due to their relaxing atmosphere and laidback tone, which is why I like to see Garden Rescue (2016-) with Charlie Dimmock and the Rich Brothers whenever it comes on telly as it's just them and their crew giving people's backyards a total makeover. They're a very easy watch and can be quite soothing at times, often making you forget about the stressful worries in your life (with the tranquility of its serenity, I'd call it some much needed escapism).

Netflix's The Big Flower Fight (2020-) makes for some right good viewing as it's always a delight to see a bunch of people pottering about outside in the fresh air having fun while arranging the floral setup in beautiful nature, surrounded by an abundance of grand greenery and the whimsical wildlife that's native to the local area. In this competition series, the contestants are tasked with making lovely decorative displays comprised of nothing but fluorescent pretty flowers and they do so in a whole load of uniquely creative ways which employ all sorts of different methods (a rather nice idea for a reality show).

Gardening can be extremely therapeutic for your state of mental health and particularly does wonders for your general wellbeing, even if you're not the most endowed person with a wealth of knowledge on the topic of plants (like me, I'm relatively still a beginner). It just makes you feel good about yourself, getting off out there on a day trip exploring around a nearby meadow with tall trees in the countryside somewhere, instead of being stuck indoors all the time (your body seizing up as a result of that). If you think this might be your kind of thing, then I say give it a watch.

Cute competition
Calicodreamin26 May 2020
The contestents make this show what it is, they are weird and quirky and kind of wonderful. In almost all the episodes I agreed with both the winner and the loser. The judge is a bit much though, his voice inflections and posturing take away from the show, it's not all about you Kristin!

Good hosts, interesting competitors
red_tape-120 May 2020
But the primary judge is a horribly suited for the job. He's obnoxiously dramatic and not in a good way. The guest judges are far better. I can't see it go on for too many more seasons.

A mixed bag
judymclane29 May 2020
If they decide to do another season, could they please find a replacement for Kristen? As others have indicated, his vibe doesn't jive with this cute and quirky little show about flowers. He seems to think he's RuPaul judging contestants on Drag Race. Although unlike Ru, he is neither especially witty, nor does he come decked out in fabulous drag. He just states the obvious most of the time (i.e., "it's beautiful!" or "it's not beautiful!" or "it needs to be beautiful"!) but in an unnecessarily nasty way. A real disappointment, considering what might have been. I did make it through to the end and enjoyed most of the challenges. The contestants were so likable and I feel like I could watch them do their thing all day.

Actually very touching!
I loved this show! I got emotional a few times; as it is... It's actually very emotional and touching at some points. The last 3 contestants were all 3 my absolute favorite teams and I loved all 6 of the people so much! They all deserved to be there and they all deserved a win, but there can only be 1. So much talent! Great show to watch! Good job guys, if you ever see this!

The book is exactly what's on the cover.
dan_da_man-6028819 May 2020
Binge watched this, because that's apparently just what I do with Netflix's ever-growing list of esoteric competition shows now.

You get exactly what you expect, people making big sculptures out of plants.

In terms of the people, the female host had more personality than most hosts on shows like this, happy to crack some jokes, poke fun at herself and get involved. The male judge? I don't really know what the point of him was. He basically said something at the start then disappeared and showed up in the final. The recurring judge was apparently competing for "world's most smackable individual" and I hear he won after baring his teeth at contestants repeatedly.

Some contestants were a bit... over the top? It really just shows the divide between artistic and creative people who make incredible things, and people who want you to think they're artistic and creative so they dive through the dumpster of a Halloween costume shop between every scene.

Some of the pieces they make are absolutely incredible. Considering the contestants are amateurs and many have very little experience with plants and the sorts of challenges they were doing, what they made was incredible and realistic to an insane degree. Personally I feel some teams were relatively overlooked, when they made really beautiful work they got minimal comments like 'it's really nice' before the judges went on to endlessly praise the same two teams every single challenge.

I feel the pacing of the show was mediocre for the most part. In the early episodes you knew from the get go which two teams were competing for first, and which two were facing elimination, because the other teams were simply not shown for more than 10 seconds. In an early episode teams created huge animals and when they were revealed I really had a moment of "wait, someone was making a wolf?" because I honestly hadn't seen the team since the start of the episode.

50 minute episodes for single challenges was also a bit drawn out at times. It's a very artistic competition so compared to a lot of similar shows where different techniques can be shown, there was just a LOT of watching people plant plants, as the final result was the only standout moment. There was a significant amount of what felt like staged drama, little spats over the selection of accessories and plant colours and one person hoarding one thing or another, but somehow miraculously everyone happened to come out with everything they needed.

All in all, if you watch the trailer and it looks interesting, it probably will be. It's not overly long so as to get boring, but there's no really significant ups and downs or particularly exciting moments, just some pretty cool plant sculptures.
