Golden Sword and the Blind Swordswoman 1970
jddog1306 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I have this film "Golden Sword and the Blind Swordswoman" distributed by JIA's Motion Picture (H.K.) Co. and have also seen this titled "Zatoichi the blind swordsman" distributed by Ocean Shores. Starring Lee Shu, Shen Yi and Kong Ban, with Yee Yuen, Han Chiang, Ho Yu-Hua, Ho Fan and O Yau-Man.

The Blind Swordswoman (Lee Shu) is out for revenge against the man (the evil mr.Lee) that killed her father and blinded her. She has a best friend (that call each other sister) that's also blind, and happens to be mr. Lee's daughter, which also seeks revenge because he killed her mother, but is reluctant to do so, being it is her father. It seems that everyone in this film is after mr. Lee (the evil bastard has killed everybodys family).

Anyway... The blind swordswoman was saved and trained by a teacher and the blind daughter was taught by her mother (wait... I thought she was dead) which turns out to be the same woman teacher for swordswoman. I guess that this woman isn't dead, or is she? maybe a ghost? Oh... and a wandering swordsman (Kong Ban) that's been spying on the blind girls, helps them out of some trouble and we find out that he's a cousin. Later we find a long lost brother, another blind girl (or maybe not) and a bunch of characters that pop in.

This movie can be confusing, yet makes perfect sense. Has some decent fight scenes, yet some slow staged ones. It makes you say "that was stupid", yet keeps you intrigued enough to keep watching. A 50/50 for me. I've seen better and I've seen worse.

Taiwanese version of a film type you'll find better elsewhere

Warning: Spoilers
I caught this on Amazon Prime under the title THE BLIND SWORDSWOMAN. It's a low rent wuxia story clearly trying to cash in on the likes of the ZATOICHI series from Japanese as well as cinematic hits such as DRAGON GATE INN and the Shaw Brothers films of the era. The story is about a blind swordswoman (...) seeking revenge against the assailant who blinded her and killed her father when she was younger. She also has a female friend, also blind, who helps her out, and later the pair are joined by one of those beloved wandering swordsman figures known here as Golden Sword. The film is very cheap looking, with poor quality camera-work throughout, and the action is certainly nothing to write home about. Any of the alternate titles mentioned at the outset of this review would be a better bet.

Quite a mess

It starts with a blind swordswoman fighting off a group of men. She fights "Zatoichi Style" using two short blades, both held in the blade down defensive position. She lets her attackers off to deliver a message to the traitor Lee. Cut to a casino. She joins another blind swordswoman and wins her money back. There is a flashback to how Lee killed her father and blinded her. Same for the other blind girl. Do we really need two blind girls in this story? The movie starts to flounder with too many characters coming in and the story not going anywhere. Plus there's no real fight until about fifty minutes in. Was the tiger painting on the wall a Shaw Brothers prop? Seems I have seen it before. My copy is a digital file made from an Ocean Shores VHS. The video is as good as VHS gets and it is dubbed in English. That's probably the kindest words I have for this movie. Overall, I found the fights poor first because of lack of focus with the moes and second because of sloppy cuts between the action. The actors only go a few moves before there is a cut in the action. The next cut often does not match due to lighting or the angle is awkward. Storywise, it was simply unbelievable to me. This was a watch one and done for me and I cannot recommend it.
