What did you just say to me!!??
marveller-663 June 2022
Man, this guy gives me the shivers. What a perfomance from Anthony & Karl. 2 of my favorite tv characters. The Lightweight scene was disgusting, but also very unique. And the cliffhanger ending!!

Great First Episode
MamadNobari973 June 2022
I'm just gonna say, that 11:42 is the best and most amazing scene in TV history.

Since the review needs more characters, I gotta say Homelander is as terrifying as ever and is becoming more of a bratty child with each episode.

The plots are progression naturally and other than the first scene, mostly nothing was surprising or a twist and it was obvious the ending scene is gonna happen from the beginning. And I'm not saying that as if it's a bad thing in this episode, no, I'm just saying that it's the first episode and it's ok. They have to set up new plots and storylines, so I don't mind if the first episode is slower, even though I didn't feel like it was slow or boring at any point, enjoyed all of it.

The only thing that I think needed a little more work was the dialogue especially in the beginning and between Hughie and Starlight in the trailer. Kinda didn't feel like natural dialogue.

Other than that, they did a good job of reestablishing every character and setting up new plot lines for the upcoming episodes.

Some Real Power
tristan_193 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Payback is a really well directed episode providing good thrills. Starlight lands a promotion, in a twist I didn't see coming. Meanwhile, Butcher and Maeve are diving into the Soldier Boy and Payback storyline. Hughie has his own troubles and adventures. Who the hell is Nadia, behind the Victoria Neuman mask ?

Solid start.

Warning: Spoilers
Fantastic start to an already prolific series. I didn't expect the first wtf moment to come so quickly (no pun intended). Homelanders character just gets better and better with each passing minute. He is a seriously damaged man.

All round great start and an already promising storyline unfolding.

Great opening scene. The movie within a series. Looked nicely done. And I loved the female cameo - I wont spoil it here, but this is her 2nd cameo this year.

Amazon Prime should actually consider a real spin off movie of 'The Seven'. Not the 'behind the scenes' real personalities we see in this series, but their public personas. With a budget, that would definitely be watched.

As you'd expect, the rest of the ep is mostly set up for the season. But its still entertaining.

Highlights were the various Homelander, A-Train & The Deep scenes, plus the reality tv show casting with Supersonic (hopefully we see more of him).

The Hughie home & office scenes got a little boring. I mean, we got 2 separate scenes of him having lunch with his boss. I was like, come on, lets move it along. But apart from that it was good.

Great to have it back!
malcolmjohnston6 June 2022
What a great treat to have The Boys back!

Just a breathe of fresh air to all the superhero content on every streaming platform morning to night.

Beautifully rough around the edges and no backtracking on the blood splatter or bad taste abound.

This is what adults want
bloodworia6 June 2022
Finally content that is consistent, socially critical, brutal and a good story. This is what entertainment is about. Not this watered down Disney BS. I watched the boys Season 3 with a buddy and after watching Halo and lots of subpar Star Wars content we just felt reinvigorated.

Feels like a movie
zelomatobap3 June 2022
After The Boys serves us with all the non stop crazy stuff in season 2, the opening episode is kinda a bit slow in pacing but the introductory to the characters and the build up on what happening next is amazing. It feels more like a movie and honestly feels different in tone.

"Go on, son. Have a bump."
LegendaryFang5610 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I want to say this was a decent start to the season, and I suppose it was, to a certain extent, but at the same time, it didn't drag me in as much as I feel a premiere should. And that brings me to the assumption of manipulation by the writers: using the previous seasons as an excuse to, still, not make this season's premiere a draw, and instead, rely on scenes like the one with Termite and Peter/Ashley and Adam, as well as the one with Stormfront and Homelander, and the episode's ending, distracting from the lack of overall intrigue from the premiere itself.

I get the impression that the writers are using shock value as a plot device in a way where they have less responsibility, as writers, to create a premiere that doesn't rely on such tactics. But that doesn't and can't change the facts: this premiere was underwhelming.

In a sense, I can't blame them because it seems to have worked considerably; most people would probably disagree with my sentiment. They probably believe those moments make this premiere fantastic; those moments generate the buzz, and that's all most people seem to talk about, but they don't see that as the overall premiere being underwhelming. Or maybe they genuinely believe the whole episode was incredible: to which I think they must've watched something different than I did; the overall premiere seemed somewhat lackluster.

And I'm also not feeling the relationship between Hughie and Annie or their characters, although I guess I "like" her more. I know people feel warm and fuzzy inside due to them, but they're the weakest characters for me so far. Their screen time together almost seems a waste of it to me. Butcher and Homelander, especially Karl Urban and Antony Starr, are by and large the lifeline of this show; every other cast member and their characters don't even come close. And their performances in this premiere, especially by Antony, were exceptional.

And while the potential romantic aspect with Frenchie and Kimiko; I don't know whether they were romantically involved in the comics: which seems possible, is a bit much (a platonic relationship seems better and more appealing), I felt some way when Frenchie and Kimiko showed up; I like their new looks, especially his. Even though I never cared too much about both characters individually, until now, it would seem.

Other than that, I liked the introduction of V24, as it's in line with the comics, and it's great seeing that aspect brought into the mix of this show; it was missing the first two seasons. I seem to remember reading someone saying that they preferred that aspect not existing (yet) and that they hoped the writers would continue on that route, and how wrong they were: such a significant aspect of the comics isn't going to be glossed over. It makes sense for the writers to do it at some point, and that 'some point' is now: three seasons into the show. I can't wait to see that aspect being brought more into the spotlight and what occurrences will come of it.

And I liked the utilization of sound (ringing in the scene with Homelander blankly watching Dawn of The Seven and when he was walking past A-Train; the kettle whistling as Butcher is staring at the recording of Homelander and Maeve) used in this premiere. But not just in this premiere: sounds have been utilized previously in this show: if memory serves. It seems simple, yet it adds so much, and surprisingly, I feel it's not used that often in TV shows and films.

I also liked some of the work done by the cinematographer, Dan Stoloff. There were instances where particular shots looked good, and the lighting was well-done, like the scene with Kimiko and Tyler: the blue, and the contrast of the blue and yellow; in the penthouse room with Termite and Peter: the yellow.

My main takeaway from this premiere was that it felt slightly underwhelming, but I guess those moments made up for it: probably a lot more to everyone else than me, though. Not to mention, they (those moments) also come across as a sign of what's to come, that this season will likely get better as far as not being underwhelming is concerned; only more emphasis on the shock value scenes, I imagine. At the very least, this season should have sustainable entertainment.

By the way, Charlize Theron's cameo was lame, and her performance wasn't that good. Her voice sounded monotone, and her acting was a bit wooden. She came across as Charlize Theron, reading lines: I've seen bits and pieces of an interview with her; this cameo was pretty much her, minus more emotion/expression. You could argue that was the point, for whatever reason, but her cameo was still unnecessary.

A Fantastic Opening
cianmuldooner3 June 2022
Seeing as we're jumping forward a year and facing down the barrel of a massive status quo shift, this episode had some heavy lifting to do. However, it passed the test with flying colours. Not only did it provide us a well-paced catch-up to where everyone stands as-is, the episode provides some very fun and interesting new relationships to be explored over the season.

The ending of the episode provides some great tension, gore and sets up a solid plot thread and character building for a main cast member while also adding depth to a previously slightly two-dimensional character.

Overall, very, VERY good opening to the season. At this moment in time, my favourite in the series.

The Seth Rogan Effect
greghughes-5166815 July 2022
I'll admit I have no clue what degree Seth Rogan is involved in the show as executive producer, but I can't help but feel the show seems more and more like something he'd produce. The shock value is getting over the top, and "messaging" is becoming too on-the-nose.

This first episode is was decent, but the quality of writing and overall direction seem to be moving backwards and it was a disappointing season open.

Just TOO over the top
garry-anderton26 June 2022
One of the things I loved about this show was that the graphic violence was used in ways that caught you off guard and then made you laugh out loud. One episode into this season and it seems like they're now just seeing what they can get away with. It really doesn't need it as it's such a well written satire. I'll probably watch the rest of this season, but I'm not in the mood for something that is being shocking for the sake of being shocking. This show used to be better than that.

Haters and snowflakes
usamahdalvi10 June 2022
Seriously the show is exactly how the world would react if superheros were real. All these hatered and hurt people need to stop watching if you don't like it .... imdb really need to add emoji reaction to user reviews at the least because some of the reviews have low rating for no reason.

Pretty good start, but....
xander-t963 June 2022
I am praying Starlight's storyline doesn't descend into girl power nonsense. I hate how shows are so on-the-nose these days whenever they put anything having to do with "the message", whatever happened to subtlety? Starlight being promoted to co-captain feels organic but then the show has to outright explain the moment to us... we get it.

Every other scene was amazing and I just hope they can at least keep anything related to social justice to a minimum.

Totally worth the wait!

Totally worth the wait! We pick up a year later. That's all I'm going to say. After picking my jaw off the floor 15 minutes in, I settled back with a huge smile for the rest of the episode.

Definitely not putting the breaks on!
kncwdws3 June 2022
I'm always afraid when a show becomes too big, the studio (in this case Amazon) will tone down the adult themes in order to appeal to a more general audience. This is definitely not the case.

Not to get into too much detail but there is one scene that left my jaw open in surprise that they were able to show. Great display of hedonistic insanity.

Everything else was great and well paced. The way this show deals with tension leaves me glued to what happens next.

Hell of an entry point to the season.
nyxstrix3 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I like how the show's handled Neuman so far. Season 2 made her feel like she was clearly based on AOC, which made the reveal that she's the headpopper a little sus, considering this is an Amazon-run show and we know Jeff Bezos probably hates her. But so far, season 3's made it pretty clear that she's just a character on the show, not meant to be a reflection on the actual politician.

AbeFrohman200-3 June 2022
That was a crazy start. This original script is what we wanted from ObiWan and all the new Star Trek shows but didn't get. Be new be creative, be something I look forward to the next episode for, not just a chore to see something. Nice work...

[7.2] Grind, clean and repeat
cjonesas16 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 1: The rating is just for the crazy visual effects, other than that it's 55+ minutes of crappy storyline plots or none of actually.

In this pilot, it heavily lacks in storyline, plot, vibe and flow. Whatever tiny you may be perceiving as thrilling are just the writers playing with your mind and splashing it with rotten chum.

My least favourite opener to the season...
robotintroverted3 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong; this episode is still great! But it feels more or less like set-up than an action-packed episode. There are some great moments, like that one scene where a man literally explodes another dude. But this episode is more of a catch-up on what everyone is up to. The ending to the episode was pretty wild as well; I didn't expect Hughie to find out this quickly, but nevertheless, still a great end!

The Homelander stuff is brilliant as usual; Billy is still the most interesting character out of The Boys. My main problem with it is that it's a huge pacing shift from the usual fast pace that The Boys is known for! Overall, I love this episode, just not my favourite season premiere!

7/10!

Edit: rewatched it, great episode! 9/10!

The Boys has always been crazy and unique... but this tops it all
lovemichaeljordan3 June 2022
The scene with the little supe was disgusting and weird but unique at least. This show has always been crazy but that scene has to take the cake.

Nothing special with this episode. It's a good re-introduction to the show after the one year break the show took. Homelander is great as usual.

Itmightbeworse16 July 2022
We loved season one of this series... season two already showed some flaws.. but we were not prepared for such a disgusting scene in the first episode of season three that put us off.... not watching any further episodes.

I am not against grotesque but the scene was concocted only for épater and stir things up. Too much disgusting. Bleah!

Talk about starting off with a bang
asadbanana12 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
While watching the beginning my sister off handedly commented about the little guy going in big man and we laughed when she got it half right. Then I said what if he loses control of his powers, and then... the sneeze. Shock and horror was drenched on our faces, this start a good way to jumpstart our memories of the seasons that have come before. Should've known nobody gets to have fun without consequences here. Watching that poor lonely thread holding Homelander's sanity in place being wound to its limit is terrifying. Brilliant start.

S3.E1 - Absolutely Brutal First Episode! [9/10]
panagiotis199324 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S3. E1) My Reaction / Review for The Boys Season 3 Episode 1 ''Payback'': Season 2 was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Wow the scene where this supe goes inside this man's thing must be one of the most disgusting scenes ive ever seen. Nice to see MM spending time with his family. Edgar wants to make Starlight cocaptain of the seven? Homelander will lose his mind, I love it. Temp V sounds like an awesome idea. Who is Tony? And what does he want from Neuman? Wow Neuman murdered him just like she did with the others, she is a villain and now Hughie knows, I wonder what he will do about it. Great cliffhanger and an amazing episode! My rating is 9/10.
