A juxtaposition of sci-fi and ancient history
ZilFuchs23 December 2020
I'm very surprised to say about a series gone this long, but Guagamela is one of the best episodes so far.

The episode has taken a lot from classical literature, especially the history of Alexander the Great's Macedonian empire. The name of the episode is a reference to one of Alexander's greatest victories, the battle of Gaugamela. Marco Inaros assumes the role of Alexander. His ship is called Pella, which was also the capital city of ancient Macedon.

Marco Inaros' (Keon Alexander) speech at the end uses a lot of rhetorical techniques used by kings and generals of the past, as written down by ancient scholars. He is a bona fide space-faring warrior-king. The juxtaposition of The Belt and ancient Macedon/Greece is very clear for those who are well versed in this part of history. The Macedonians and Greeks were vassalized and later incorporated into the Persian Empire and suffered through great ordeal and atrocities. The Persians considered themselves to be at the centre of the World, or "Inners", while the Greeks for them were at the outer edge, or "the belt" with inferior peoples. Alexander, with his Macedonian beratna and "Free Greeks" seized the Persian Empire like a lightning storm, or should I say asteroid shower. Like Alexander's army of the past, Inaros' troops care little if the casualties of the enemy are soldiers or civilians, deeming it their right to exact revenge upon their oppressors.

In his speech Inaros talks about how the outer planets and the Ring Worlds now belong to the Belters. This can be seen as a reference to what Alexander The Great told his troops - that the uncharted and unknown worlds of the east (modern India) belonged to the Hellenic peoples after the crucial victory at Gaugamela which opened the Gates of Babylon for his army. When Inaros talks about a new way of life, a better way, a Belter way, this again is what Alexander The Great's objective and conduct was. As his army moved across lands they were followed by a huge amount of architects, engineers, clergymen and scholars whose task was to establish new cities and Hellenize the conquered lands.

I lift my hat to the authors of the novels. They have done their research and fictionalized it superbly, and of course the production team for putting it all on screen so well. Now I'm very curious to find out whether Inaros faces his "mutiny at Opis" later on in the story (I have not read the books).

My heart is still pounding
Borgenschatz23 December 2020
Just when you thought the first 3 episodes have already topped out in terms of quality, this episode takes it to a whole other level. Everything that all previous seasons have been building up to now becomes fully realized in a heart-pounding episode. Not a single moment did I not feel like I was at the edge of my seat. The plot twists and turns and the sudden moments of shock. And this is just the fourth episode!! We are truly witnessing the finest of space sci-fi television in history!

OMG! The ending speech was convincingly dark.

What an episode this was. I wished the episode was much longer. I wanted more from it. Couldn't even feel how fast the 43 minutes passed. The ending speech by Marco was so great and convincing to the Belters. If I was Belter, then I would probably fall for him.

Best SF in years
nlmike24 December 2020
I loved shows like Babylon 5, Farscape, and some of star trek.

The Expanse is the SF show to watch. This episode was setup from the very first episode, in season 1. And it didn't disappoint in the slightest.

The 'badguy' is a scary charismatic narcissist with a lot of patience. And this was his day for sure...

I hope they can keep the stories at this quality. Do not change all of a sudden, THIS is perfect.

Thrilling!
chaakar23 December 2020
People say that the first season is a bit slow, but how it lays everything out for development, even this far into it, makes every second of it worth it. These past few years, time after time, this series has delivered fantastic episodes (like this one) that have mind blowing plot progression and action packed sequences, often even with 2-4 such episodes back to back. An excellent monologue by Inaros there at the end!

It is absolute insanity that a show like this has been cancelled, more than once! Sad as it is, I am a bit thankful the show never fell apart; I feel the writers have earned a bit of our trust and we can expect them deliver us a great 6th and final season (with a reasonable amount of confidence 🤞).

Can't wait for the rest of this season (damn Amazon for not putting all the episodes out at once)!!

I would give this episode a 100 if I could

This is my favorite episode of The Expanse so far. I love that they're getting back to the solar system and not focusing on the ring gates. The crew of the Roci is spread out around the solar system and we see how the events unfolding effects each one of them. We also get vintage Averserala which I love.

Marco Innaros is a great villain. The speech at the end gave me chills. The attack on Tycho station would have been an amazing episode on its own, but coinciding with the attack on Earth made it all the more awesome. Fred getting gunned down, the protomolecule getting stolen, Bobby rejoining Alex. The crew of the Roci is coming together and it's shaping up to be an epic season. The CGI keeps getting better and better too. I absolutely love this show. I can't wait for the next episode. I think the fact they released this episode a week after the first 3 made it all the more powerful. Get ready Baratnas. Sasake. If you don't like this show you're a Welwalla!

Brilliant
malte-neumann24 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is brilliant storytelling. With genocidal methods, Inaros made in fact a decisive move to establish the oppressed Belters as the prominent bearers of the future of humanity. The solution of this perilous situation cannot be in restoring just the old order. This is SciFi using the lessons of history and its unavoidable political implications. That is the central reason why The Expanse is so good, beside all the other evident qualities and maybe also the cause why so few people get the appeal of this series, which is too bad.

The Expanse is definitely in the top 3 sci-fi space opera shows in history. I hope they find a way to continue telling this captivating, amazing unique story, after season 6. Great entertainment 👍🏾

A "Shockwave" felt through the system
xEmberli23 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
From start to finish you're on the edge of your seat. We see a little into Amos' character development before the worst happens. With such a cliff hanger of Season 4, we finally see the "pieces" put together in a shocking and jaw dropping episode. The Earthers and the Martians, are once again needing each other. When you think it can't get any more wild, it proves you wrong. One of the best episodes of the season so far. Interesting to see how these events develop later in the season. We aren't even half-way through and we are seeing major exchange of power throughout the system. Once again, great writing and acting by all parties. It's a rollercoaster!

Without a doubt worse season so far
enicholas-6420924 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Without a doubt this is the worst season by far on the show . The connection between Naomi and her son could not be more forced with a villain that is ripped straight out of a 80s comic book . This show typically never gives Holden any sort of credit but now he is so much the idiot more than hero , he used to only be 1 step behind , now he is 7 and we are supposed to be on his side without yelling at the screen going " You damn idiot " . I always gave this show a bit of a pass for the bad writing at times but this season is just too much for me . Long time fan and I don't think I can take anymore .... I'm done

SPLENDID. EXCELLED IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE.
antarikshkak23 December 2020
I've been following this series for a while now and everytime I think, they can't excel that, that was the best episode/ moment of the whole series but they still manage to do so. This episode was excellent in every way. It was intense, exciting, the acting was superb, the writing splendid as always. One of the best shows out there.

Adapting pretty darn fine
lmilovitch24 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Series five is going to be quite a turbulent one and so far it's going very strong. The teams divided and the powers are about to be inverted. Particularly I'm fond of how Mars is handled. Here though in this ep is when things really get stirred. For the most part it doesn't disappoint. I'm impressed with the portrayal of Inarus.

Ps - isn't it good to have something compelling to watch !

Astonishing
twgarner-7666323 December 2020
I've been a heavy fan of the expanse since s1. Various episodes such as Caliban War, Abaddon Gate and Scaleum have been amazing but this tops them all. I'm so glad Amazon took this on and I'm so glad it's stayed close to the books

Marco's plan starting to come in form!
berry-5443023 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Amazing episode for an already amazing show. Each main character had their place in the episode but Holden's and Naomi's were extremely powerful. Every thing about this episode was fantastic from the acting to the special effects, which are getting better every year. Last season set up Marco Inaros' agenda against the Inner planets Earth and Mars and now we see it in full scale. Holden unsuccessfully tries to stop the protomolecule from leaving the station while the stealth rocks hit Earth and Marco declares the belt is taking over power of the ring gates. This episode set up the rest of the season to action packed and tense. This is a great show and I'm so glad Amazon picked it up!

Please God don't let the producers ruin this show like they did with game of thrones. Cause this is the game of thrones of the Syfy genre! This was the "Red Wedding" episode of the series!

Sci-fi at its best.

Superlatives are pointless simply the best sci fi series for a generation . Utterly compelling, brilliantly realised. Fairly much the exact opposite to what Star Trek discovery has become.

Fantastic from start to finish!
senseimark-1442223 December 2020
Without a doubt the best episode of the show so far. There's been seasons worth of build up leading to this moment, and holy hell they delivered. As a book reader, finally getting to see these events play out on screen has been a combination of intense and terrifying. The visuals, the writing and the acting are all phenomenal. And we're only on episode 4!

This show has come a long way, and I really hope this is the season that really puts the show out there.

Can this episode even be topped?
Mromson25 December 2020
This episode is being touted as the best episode of the series so-far, and with good reason. It will be hard for the showrunners to even come close to topping this excellent episode in the future.
