This story really touched me

Something about this story felt very personal. The fact that Diane survived and seemed like such a genuinely amazing person was uplifting - and how inspiring was the love story of her partner taking care of her even though they weren't even married? I am a very agnostic person, and even I was incredibly moved by her account of feeling like something was pulling her to get up and carrying her to get help. Personally, I just think some people are very exceptional, as this woman is. The police officer, too, just seemed very genuine in his emotion. It just really surprises you how tragedy can bring out the humanity in people.

It also made me reflect on my own adversities, seeing such an extreme example and a well adjusted person on the other side. It makes you think how much something like that can change you, and it's ok to grieve what was lost. Yet, it doesn't change your value as a person. I liked how her partner told her daughter that even if she looked different, it was still her mom. Something is just so deeply empathetic and loving in its simplicity. The only thing I disagreed with was the daughter insisting her mother not be seen as a victim, as if "victim" is a dirty word. That's a big problem in our culture, as if victims somehow brought it on themselves. She was, in fact, a victim, and that perpetrator left many in his wake, as destructive people do. It does not change her value as a person or diminish her strength and courage in any way.
