Warning: Spoilers
"Yard Kings" is an artistic production that tells about the effects of domestic violence on children and women, builds its atmosphere on a very dark structure and contains many truths in the name of cinematography. The color plate used in the film is very successful. The right colors were chosen for a movie set in a scrapyard. In addition, the aspect ratio you use is a particular choice (usually for traditional television & computer monitor standards). It probably stands as a special preference for the particular mood of the movie. First of all, it is necessary to focus on the subjects on which the film was thriving. The performances are fine. The dialogues the children have with Keith are quite entertaining. The general mood is based on pessimistic. The preferred color palette and filter proves this. We can say that the general atmosphere of the film is quite impressive for a short film. In the last episode, after leaving the caravan, while shooting with the current camera, the female character approaches the camera, and then we see that she is shot from behind. Here a smoother transition could be made, again showing the children and taking a close-up of the woman sitting down. These small problems are present in the movie. Of course, this may be an editing choice, but a film's success in a cinematic sense depends on such small details. In the film's finale, the music used must either stop or change the tone before the "Credits" episode is on the screen. It's continuing the same tone of music over both image and text damages the film's atmosphere. During the woman's emotional moment, a pause could be given and then the music could be continued with the credits. A small detail, but how important is it, right? In a film, no one should not make the mistake of saying the name of the film clearly. It would be sufficient for the children to name the area they established as "Yard". But then the boy shouts, "Yard Kings". We have to leave this to the audience. The audience should or should not think that if that area is "Yard" they should also be "Yard Kings". The editing and script of the movie should not reveal everything. Leaving a few elements for the audience to discover will make you more successful. Except for these minor problems, we have to say it's a very good short film...

A pleasure to watch

This is a very heartwarming story that shows how everyone needs their own "sanctuary", in response to harsh reality. Colours and music convey nostalgia and tenderness, performances are impressive.

Beautifully Concieved
ahaydenwason14 November 2020
A beautifully concieved film that well ballances and skillfully interwines a world of harsh and dark realities with hope, rebirth and warmth. The direction and cinamatography is particually standout. It was a joy to see at the Screen Culture Film Festival, streamed online 2020.

Honorable Mention

Vasco Alexandre guides us into a world of pain in which rebirth is possible only if total destruction occurs first (the metaphor of the landfill that recalls the beautiful Garden State by Zach Braff is perfect). From destruction, we move on to reconstruction, often possible only through eyes that are hungry for dreams that only children have. The impeccable talent of two very young actors, Elle Atkinson and David Price, beautifully directed, does not struggle to move the audience and to make it dwell on the meaning of self-love and domestic violence. It won Honorable Mention for Production Design.

Best Student Film
info-9755112 November 2020
This film by Vasco Alexandre manages, in just 15 minutes, to show an entire world, thanks to the perfect use of aesthetic and substantial metaphors that join a simply impeccable script, which respects all the rules of the perfect short film. Every detail, emphasized with humble elegance so as not to obscure the intimate purpose of the film, has a meaning: from the barbed wire to Ellie's sword, from the dog to the car seat. Every detail of the amazingly well-chosen set design encloses a piece of the interior world of the characters. It won the Best Student Film Award.

Best Student Film
The filmmaker did an incredible job of weaving this fictional story into what's happening today through the eyes of the children. The film very moving and beautifully shot.

Intensely emotional & beautifully filmed

The film deals with some very serious topics through the eyes of a child. Seeing things from their perspective emotionally entangles us in her journey, which is a powerful experience through the great camera work and heartbreaking story.

Impressive for a student production
AndreaReal_14 November 2020
The film has a lot of emotional and intense moments that allow the audience to travel through the story. The topic is more necessary than ever, as it talks about domestic abuse, so the film helps to raise awareness on this matter. It does not treat it as the main issue, because in this case, the kids show it under their perspective. The director combined realistic and fantastic elements to make the story harsh and sweet at the same time. It is an impressive piece of work to be a student production.

Masterful Approach to the Story From All Involved
inmyopinionflicks8 October 2022
There is professionalism in every single aspect of Yard Kings from the actors to the cinematography to the sound -- it's hard to believe that it's a low-budget, student-led, independent film.

All the elements of the film worked together as we followed these children building a sanctuary, a safe haven, away from the chaos of home.

This film skillfully explores young children taking their own lives into their hands and creating a better reality for themselves and the ones they love.

Yard Kings is an impressive, poignant, and gritty film, so much so that I wish there was more of the narrative to explore. It's easy to see why this student-led film has won several awards and a lot of positive recognition. Brilliant direction from Vasco Alexandre and a masterful approach to the story from all involved.
