Among the most upsetting episodes of TV I've ever seen
jay-9557818 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Objectively speaking I think Bastogne (episode 6) is probably the strongest episode of Band of Brothers. Its just such a tight piece of writing and directing. However, Why We Fight is simply an emotional tour de force. I first watched it a good few years ago now but it remains seared into me.

With not a mention of Nazi ideology all series prior to this episode, the reveal of what was in the woods comes as an absolute sucker punch. It's just an utterly spine chilling hour. Rarely can a piece of art leave you stone cold silent after you've experienced it, but that's exactly what Why we fight does.

The use of Beethoven's string quartet is a particular master stroke. That music is so full of quiet longing, it's a sonically sparse plea to the heavens. The episode seems to be asking "how could the same society that gave us Beethoven also give us the depravity of the final solution?"

The question is always the same: what the hell did they think they were doing?

One of the best episodes of television ever.
boltjets31 December 2019
This is the best episode in the series and that's no easy task. Everything about this series is payed off in this episode. Private Webster and Caption Nixon both have some of the most honest and realistic moments in the whole series and the conversations the characters have are an authentic and an insightful look into the minds of war-torn soldiers. "Why We Fight" is the perfect name for this episode, so impactful and powerful in every way. This episode is why we create and everyone involved in this masterpiece should be proud to have shared such a phenomenal part of the story.

The best episode in series for me
konstantinmikhalevich20 December 2017
This episode is very different to others. It's not about action scenes like bloody combats, hard training or relationship between solders. The beginning of "Why we fight" is very peaceful, soft (including opening talk). Eventually expectation of something extremely terrifying appears... What comes next? You'd better see it on your own.

Powerful filmmaking
snoozejonc27 February 2022
Easy Company enters Germany.

This is an important episode that depicts a truly horrific aspect of this period in history.

Warfare is an awful subject matter to portray dramatically on film, but what is shown here is truly disturbing. I can only imagine how much worse it must have been in reality. I once spoke to a WWII veteran in 2002 who was part of a unit involved in a similar liberation. He attempted to talk about his memories before breaking down in front of me.

The portrayal of Easy Company making this particular discovery goes against historical records, but the discovery itself (albeit by different soldiers) is depicted accurately according to records.

All production values are of the highest standard, with cinematography, set design, colour grading and music combining for an appropriately somber tone. The opening and closing sequences are particularly memorable.

Ron Livingston leads the episode well and there are many strong supporting performances.

This will never leave your memory!

Wow... after all the previous episodes, the tone completely skiftede in this episode, deciding to focus on, perhaps, the most grusome and dark side of WWII!

This is filmmaking at its most powerfull! I was left in shock.. not feeling quite like myself after this, like something was missing! I felt like the characters, who could barrly believe or comprehense what they saw.. to think humans were responsible for this! This is humanity at its most dark!

After all the other episodes, this episode still manages to knock them out, with its brutaly honest depiction! The violin-score, gave off the same vibes as Schindlers List!

This episode shows why WWII is one of the darkest times in human history, and why this show is a MUST WATCH!!

Man what an episode. We see the war and carnage all season but rarely do we see the aftermath. The civilians. The regular people. This was a tough watch but we all need to see this. Get your tissues ready.

Why we fight is a memorable episode.
mm-398 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why we fight is a memorable episode. Why we fight has the same big production, strong directed and acting of a solid H B O series. With the war winding down and clean up of the German army has many troops are disgruntled. For good reason, who wants to get shot by one of the last bullets from a it's already over war. A camp appears! No one know what for? Abandon for good reason? Who wants to take responsibility for a genocide camp! There is the horror of the camp itself done in a way the viewer experiences the depravity, hunger and desperation of the camp victims. What does command do with the dying , starving, and sick? And who knew what? Done with taste and reality there is a blend horror with shame which end with the women who hated the troops going into here house having a different look when she had to clean up some of the mess at the camp. Why we fight stands out for me! The end made the troop understand the gravity of what one can not understand! 9 stars.

The German countryside
anselmdaniel17 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This review contains spoilers for the ninth episode of Band of Brothers entitled "Why We Fight".

Easy Company is occupying Germany and the company as a whole believes the war is over. Adolf Hitler has committed suicide and the Allies are pushing deeper into Germany. This episode follows Captain Lewis Nixon who is at his lowest point. As Captain Lewis Nixon scrounges for alcohol, a patrol by Easy Company discovers something horrifying in the German woods.

This episode of Band of Brothers is a study on the episode's question. Lewis Nixon questions his own resolve at seeing the deaths of his comrades. As the episode continues and Easy Company finds the concentration camp, Nixon and the audience understands why they must fight.

This is one of the most gut wrenching episodes as Easy Company is confronted with the horrors the Nazis inflicted on their "undesirables." Like Perconte, it was difficult to explain what they had encountered. It was rough watching Easy Company handle a crisis they were not prepared for.

It is a great choice choice to follow Captain Lewis Nixon. Lewis Nixon was always portrayed as competent officer that was one of Richard Winters' friends. To see this man encounter such a rough situation was emotional to see.

"Why We Fight" is one of the best Band of Brothers episodes. It demands a watch.

Meeting the enemy
v-5628914 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The episode started like the couple of previous ones.. talking, action, more talking.. I was starting to be tired of the repetitive plot, but it this time, it was slightly different.. I welcomed the numerous scenes questioning of why the soldiers actually fight... It seemed that the enemy was not that much different to them... I started thinking that it could be interesting to see how the allies discovered concentration camps.. so I kind of expected what came.. nevertheless I stared with my mouth wide open the entire second half of the episode.. Although expected (I though maybe in the last episode..), so it came "out of a sudden".. The moment of surprise was used perfectly. I think the director couldn't do a better job bringing the audience as close as possible to the feelings soldiers had when entering the Concentration camps! (and yes, I was criticizing when any episode earlier went emotional, but this time was different. I totally bought it!)

No, not "the best episode on tv ever".
silverton-3795922 October 2023
I'm not saying that this isn't a good episode. There is plenty of emotional triggering included and some good cinematography, but the dialog is clumsy and unrealistic. The characters become a mass of men with one face, in some cases, and several behave uncharacteristically similar in their reactions, compared to their individualistic performances in earlier episodes.

So far, the postwar stories are unsatisfying, with the more interesting characters being pushed out of the picture. I expect more of this kind of thing in the closing episode. Looking at the reviews of this episode make it seem that the 10 star fanboys watched some other episode that I missed somehow because this isn't the "best episode of the series" let alone "the best episode in tv history".

Reading those little blurbs just tell me that the reviewer had one or more emotional triggers pulled and can't even explain why the episode was worthy of the 10 stars being awarded.

I went to Poland years ago and i saw Auschwitz, and see this episode has been almost worst than be there, because shows jew's conditions and faces and all is accurate.

Auschwitz is more a "museum", that is also horrible to remember what happen but this episode shows this too.

Why do we fight ?
adrouxm6 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion the best episode of the series and maybe it belongs a high position on national television. I have no words. The numerous feelings that the episode gave me, was why I loved it. At first we see how war destroyes each side as humans. Lifes get demolished, friends, family dies and you can not do anything. But as the episode goes on, it happens, concentration camp. It has beautiful cinematography but at the same time so realistic that makes you want to cry for those poor souls. How they were Carrying dead bodies of their family and friends, how they were fighting over one slice of bread and a sip of water. Humans are monsters and that episode pictures just that.

I have no words.

One of the most emotional pieces in all of cinema.
kieransyed7 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There are no words to truly describe the horror when that small patrol stumbles upon the camp. From there on out, all the soldiers can do nothing but look in horror at the jewish folk who have been through hell over and over again.

I believe that this is the most powerful part of this episode, the fact that so much is conveyed by such little words. The director appeals to the senses of sight and sound, with the brutal scenes of the camp and the malnourished dead strewn across the ground, and the Beethoven in the background. The music "fills in" the void left by what little dialogue there is at some points. If you have not watched this, i highly suggest you do, but be prepared to leave with the feelings of anger, frustration, despair, and the agonizing, gut-wrenching hole left where your heart was.

Why we have to stop the fight
ugurtuyun-883547 July 2020
Killing one person is like killing all humanity and saving one life is like saving all lives. Every war is a crime if you are not protecting your country. These two frases can give us all a hint of why we have to stop the fight, but to understand first one needs to read, listen, observe and reflect. This episode is a great chance to pass through this experience to understand how wars destroy lives, the lives that have nothing to do with the reasons to start a war.

Very terrible. Humanity is the first thing ever.

I hope this tragedy does not happen again.

Human beings are members of a whole/ In creation of one essence and soul/ If one member is afflicted with pain/ Other members uneasy will remain/ If you have no sympathy for human pain/ The name of human you cannot retain/

9.65/10, Near Perfection
dcdude-2698830 July 2023
When I say that this was a very sad episode, I mean that this was a VERY sad episode. My favorite character in this episode was Nixon. My favorite things about this episode were the storyline, the acting, and the Protagonist. I have yet to watch the finale. I am watching this whole series with my mom, and I am trying to rewatch episodes 1-7 to review them. In my personal opinion, this definitely wasn't the BEST episode of the series, but I can admit that it was still a near-perfect episode either way. This was still one of the episodes where it shows you that this is definitely a must-watch miniseries. This is on the road to being my favorite season of television of all time. I only just need one more epic episode, and it might be official.
