Enter Ian as 'Dizzy'
lor_29 June 2023
Ian McShane dominates this ITC production as Disraeli, first seen as a successful novelist making his way climbing upward in high society. He runs for office in Parliament, standing as an independent four times without success.

He has an old friend Clara, but falsl in love with Henrietta, a married woman whose oh-so civilized husband leaves her when the affair becomes evident. Adding insult to injury, hubby goes off with mutual friend to Europe.

Eventually with backing he runs as a Conservative, but faces antisemitic prejudice, unsubtly expressed in the press. His challenging one of the naysayers to a duel wins him notoriety and advances his career, but Henrietta proves to be unfaithful. Dizzy has his loyal sister Sarah to encourage his advancement and buck up his confidence.

Victoria is the new queen, and Disareli runs for Parliament again, this time with seven different seats to choose from. Mary Anne becomes his sponsor. With her husband Wyndham Lewis. A seated Tory from Maidston, who offers to pay his election expenses to join him in Parliament from that constituency. He's elected in 1837.

Under his curly hairdo, the extremely handsome McShane has the presence that has carried his career for five decades, still going strong in American productions varying from "Deadwood" to "John Wick" He truly stands out here backed by a talented ensemble cast.
